Art of the Day: “Roost” by Craig Maher

An illustrator based in New York, Craig Maher has done work such clients as Alderac Entertainment, Hidden City Games and many more. He works with traditional oils, and from his site says he uses very little mediums, so it’s all wet on wet paint here. The thing I found most interesting is that he went to the Joe Kubert School of Cartooning and Graphic Art. I have always been interested about the school so it’s nice to see an artist come from there.

A lot of his work is of course made for the various clients that hire him, but the piece shown here looked to me like a more personal one. I really dig the whole feel and layout of it. I could easily see this painting shown alongside such artists as Kris Lewis, Chris Peters, Carrie Anne Baade and even James Jean. I also added the intitial drawing for the painting, I absolutely love how he draws and paints faces two different ways.

Craola interview in December issue of Blisss! Magazine

Greg “Craola” Simkins has an interview in the December issue of Blisss! Magazine. I guess you can pick one of them up in any skate/surf shop for free. I don’t have any type of shop near me, so luckily there is some pretty big images of the interview. It would be nice to have the mag for collecting sake though.

Click the “read more” for the rest of the interview with big images.

Daniel Martin Diaz and Morgan Slade @ BSFA

Two more great shows opening up this Saturday night are taking place at Billy Shire Fine Arts. In gallery I is “Anatomy of Sorrow” featuring new works by Daniel Martin Diaz. Then in gallery II is a handful of works by Morgan Slade.

Both shows look great, I really like the playful works of Morgan. Mixed media works can sometimes be too much to look at, but if done right as seen here, they can look amazing. Daniel Martin Diaz’s new work is also great. A good amount of the show has sold. Head on over and take a look at both shows.

Kris Kuksi launches a new website

Kris Kuksi has updated his website to a new version. Not sure if you ever saw the last version, but this one is a good step forward. Easy to move around, looks great and most importantly let’s you really focus in on his art. I’m not the biggest fan of flash based galleries, but in this instance he has done it right. The images load fast, are nice and large and you get that killer zoom option.

Head on over and take a look at all his work, his pencil works (shown) are amazing. I would love to see some of these in person. The piece shown is entitled “Anatomica Fabrica” and is 11″ x 14″.

Regardless of whether or not your a fan of this pin-up icon, there is no denying how influential she is. One of the first models in Playboy magazine, a muse for artists such as Olivia & Dave Stevens, as well as inspiration for clothing and hairstyles for many a fan and alternative model. So in tribute to this pinup-queen here are some works of art featuring that smile and hairdo we have seen hundreds of times and will no doubt see many more. Original paintings by Simon Boses, aka Mudmonkey

Simon Boses was one of the featured artists on the site more than a year ago. He is one of the few sculptural artists that I have been able to feature on the site. He has been pretty quite for the past year, but recently I see that he has made some ACEO’s or collectible artists cards. Basically tiny original paintings.

Both works are acrylic on bristol board and are 2.5″ x 3.5″. I have seen some ACEO frames out there and they look really killer all framed up. I really love how you can see his style shine through these little works. I hope he keeps going with the painting. The first one is entitled “Mono Vision” and the second is “Perilous Voyage”.

Head on over and check em out: Simon Boses original paintings

Molly Crabapple recaps Art Basel

Art Basel is now over and for those of us (me) that missed the even, artist Molly Crabapple wrote a recap of the event. Focusing specifically on the “lowbrow/pop surrealist” contributions to the festivities.

I love how she touches on the idea that this genre is looked at as just illustrative, something I have argued with quite a few professors. It just isn’t getting the respect it deserves, but as she wrote in the article: “If pop-surrealists don’t envy high art’s pretense, they covet their cash.” Very true, she references the painting that Mark Ryden sold for one million dollars. Just illustration huh?
