Preview: Scott Holloway @ La Luz de Jesus

Opening up this Friday, August 7th at the La Luz de Jesus Gallery will be four solo shows with new works from Jessica Dalva, Scott Holloway, Misato Otake & Jasmine Worth. All four previews are up for viewing right now, but for this preview I wanted to focus on the artwork of Scott Holloway.

Scott’s exhibition is entitled “Memento Mori”, and “centers on the holy relics of Saints and biblical figures as highly detailed anatomical icons.” The drawings and mixed media works look like something right out of the anatomical studies of Da Vinci, but “with passages from the Bible and text from medical treatise, sprinkled with a bit of Surrealism.” in each one. The paintings show a skilled hand with oil paints, and each of the subjects surrounded by a treatment of gold leaf. “Visions of St. Luke” and “St. Luke’s Hand II” both are painted in frames that looked plucked right out of the Renaissance. Each one is aged and shows the effects of time, while the hands are clear and vibrant. St Luke “is the patron saint of Artists, Sculptors, and Physicians. The hand is his symbol.” To me this fusion of old worn in surfaces with the freshly painted icons is like connecting the old with the new, showing that many elements of the past can still be relevant today.

Like many, Scott showed talent and wanted to be an artist from a young age, but he wanted to learn painting in the style of the Northern Renaissance which included such artists as Robert Campin, Jan Van Eyck, Albrecht Durer and Hieronymous Bosch. I wish more were interested in drawing inspiration from the past as Scott has.

The works look amazing, and is definitely worth a look. Scott Holloway @ La Luz de Jesus

“Label Me” print by Greg “Craola” Simkins

The original painting from this print will be in a group show at the Joshua Liner Gallery opening this August 15th. The print is available to purchase now however. It is 18″ x 24″, signed and numbered in an edition of 50 for $150.

It’s an amazing image, I love that Warhol inspired soup can in the middle, Chunky Bunny flavored. I also like that the print is on paper. Canvas prints are fine too, but some images just look striking on nice paper with a frame to finish the whole look.

“The Collector” print by David Lozeau

David Lozeau has added a new print to his site, and a little blurb about it as well:
” Once again, we find our friend the octopus scouring ocean floor for oddities to add to his collection. After spending a considerable amount of time shopping an ancient moai resting place, he finally selects a large, battered stone statue to drag back to his eclectic underwater tiki hut.
The background was painted with various shades of blue and green acrylics to create a murky, monochromatic feel, while the octopus and moai were painted with 1 shot enamel to make them pop off the clayboard. Lots of highlights and lowlights were used to detail and outline the characters, but black was only used on the eyeball.”

The print comes in two sizes, 8″ x 10″ for $20 or 16″ x 20″ for $60.

New prints by Josh Ellingson

Josh Ellingson has added some new prints to his online shop. All of the prints are Ultrachrome inks on archival paper, 11.7″ × 16.5″, signed and unframed for $39.95. I really like the Godzilla print, as well as “Free Wi-Fi” inspired after Edward Hopper’s “Night Owls” painting.

“Orphan I” print by Ben Tour

Ben Tour currently has a solo show going on at the Joshua Liner Gallery, that will be over this coming August 8th. He also just added a new print to his online shop. “Orphan I” comes from a painting he had in his last solo show, “Electric Orphans” at the Meta Gallery. This print is 17″ x 22″ on museum rag paper with deckled edges, signed and numbered in an edition of 50 for $200. This was by far my favorite piece he had in the “Electric Orphans” show. It was available from the gallery, but now you can go straight to the source and get it from Ben.

“New Breed” @ Last Rites Gallery

Just this Saturday, August 1st at the Last Rites Gallery in New York the group show “New Breed” opened. The features work by 10, emerging artists that have never been shown at Last Rites before. The list of participating artist is: David R. Choquette (shown), Shay Davis, Mickey M Edtinger, Paul Gerrard, Charlie Immer, Sara Antoinette Martin, Richard Meyer, Reuben Negrón, Chris Peters & Kurt Wiscombe.

If you have been a reader of the Creep Machine for a while now, you will know David R. Choquette from the “Attack of the B Movie Show”. He entered an amazing Killer Klown painting. He has three in this show, each one looks outstanding. I’m glad he has had the opportunity to show at such a great gallery. Another familiar name is Paul Gerrard, having been featured on the site three times so far. I love his work, and am happy people are seeing how exciting digital art can be. I was also happy to see Charlie Immer (shown). He has been putting out some paintings that are just a blast to look at. Some of these painting have been in a few galleries already, quite possibly due to the price of his working getting too high too fast maybe? The card also shows a painting by Reuben Negron, and while he is in the show that specific piece does not seem to be. He is a very talented painter, one that I have been watching for a while now. He works primarily in watercolors, a medium I have great respect for and seems to be gaining more popularity.

Anyway, make sure you head over to the site and give the full show a look. New Breed @ Last Rites

Interview: Shawn Barber @ Shooting Gallery News

Coming this August 15th, Shawn Barber has a new solo show that will take place at the Shooting Gallery in San Francisco. “Tattooed Portraits – Snapshots” is a whole new body of work by Shawn “Contrasting between realistic figurative painting, art history and tattoo culture, this exhibit showcases Barber’s signature brush work”. Right after the Paul Chatem/Mike Maxwell show, Shooting Gallery gives us another amazing exhibition.

Shawn Barber is not only an extremely talented painter, but a teacher as well. A certain private college I was interested in had him listed on the site as one of the current professors, and when it turned out he was no longer teaching there I was at least able to learn some tricks from the Massive Black released “Foundation Painting with Shawn Barber” dvd, which I highly recommend.

Shooting Gallery News has just posted an interview with Shawn, so make sure you check it out. Shawn Barber interview @ Shooting Gallery News

“We’ll Be Right Back… After These Messages” @ Rivet Art

Freshly opened this August 1st at Rivet Art in Colombus, OH is a group show entitled “We’ll Be Right Back… After These Messages” . All the pieces from the show are inspired by cartoons from the 80′s and 90′s, which in my humble opinion had some truly amazing cartoons. There are some really excellent artists participating in the show, Andrew Bell, Charlie Owens, Daniel Elson (co-curated the show), Scott Campbell, Thom Glick, Shannon Bonatakis, CJ Metzger and more.

I was already becoming a huge fan of Scott Campbell’s work, then he goes and makes an amazing Thundarr the Barbarian inspired work “Feelin Super Similar”, perfect. I also really like Jason Limon’s “Ooze got the Snorks”. I was never a fan of that cartoon, but if it looked like what Jason has created I would have never missed an episode. Along with the original works, there is also a couple of prints to be had. Charlie Owens has a print of his piece, “Somewhere over the Rainbow” limited to 38. Chris Lee has “Mr. Villain’s Class of 1983″, which is 19″ x 13″, limited to 50 and can be framed or not.

Kelly Vivanco & Jason Limón @ Subtext Gallery

Opened just last night, July 31st at the Subtext Gallery in San Diego was “Under the Cover of Darkness: New Works by Kelly Vivanco & Jason Limón”. The show is online for those of us who can’t see the works in person. Kelly’s work looks amazing as usual, and almost seems to be getting more intense. I like the odd shaped panels she has been working on lately. Jason Limón’s new work has really grown on me. I have enjoyed his art since the first time I saw it, the textures the way he cuts the panels he paints on and the slightly muted color palettes. While I liked the content of his older work, I am glad that that he has shifted over to these new elements. It’s always a treat to not only enjoy the technical side of an artists work, but to also be surprised at every new new show not knowing what they will bring.

Featured Artists for August: Godmachine & Mark Riddick

It’s been quite a long time since I have had the featured artists up at the first of the month. This months artists are Mark Riddick and Godmachine. Both artists have a darker style to their art, create designs for a variety of bands and I think their work compliments each other well. I would also like to thank last months featured artists, Jacob Mantia and Jesse Riggle, you can find their art in the archives if you missed it.

I also was able to get a mini-interview with Godmachine:

CM: I know you have been drawing as far back as you can remember, what were some of the things that influenced your artwork along the way?

GM: as with everyone that evil Disney started me off- at the same time it was nature books- I just remembered I used to draw horses a lot- wonder why i stopped? odd. But I think it was when i became a teenager and MTV hit the UK and Skateboarding hit big. It was definitely skateboarding. Jim Phillips has a lot to answer for- he defined a generation of artists and I see the same thing year in year out. what a legend.

CM: Are there any specific movies or music that continually help to inspire your current work?

GM: Return of the living dead, Blade Runner, Taxi Driver, Re animator, Raising Arizona, Holy Mountain, 2001, La Haine, Jacobs Ladder, and thousands more too many to mention.
Musically it has to be Kyuss and the doors. The need to be weird and wired. even though I live the clean life now- they did it for me.

CM: You have created designs for poster, shirts, skateboards, is there anything you would love to do that you haven’t been approached about yet?

GM: I’m hopefully doing watches this week. I would love to Design living spaces. I hate the way we waste space and fill it with junk. I was standing behind the tv the other day- there is this huge gap there- its been there since we moved in and put the brain drug alter there. So the Mrs comes home and there I am in this space and she asks what the hell? and I told her- I pay for this space Ima bloody well use it. I go to peoples houses and they have chairs in hallways with books next to them- We all know you wont find them sat in the hallway reading a book- its senseless- I dont get it- We think we need all this room to live- we dont. I wouldnt design a small space but I would use it for a better purpose than putting a vase with sticks in (my Mrs mum has sticks in her hallway- sticks!!!- they pay for sticks from ikea and make the waste of space seem appropriate and ‘worth it’….with sticks!!!).

CM: Finally, you said that you used to work with paints to create your art, is there any chance that we will see acrylic or oil works from you, possibly in a gallery setting?

GM: I have a real problem with galleries around by me and I still have a chip on my shoulder about it. I would carry my canvases round truing to get a break a spot a chance…and they would all either say- you got to give us 99% of you takings or ‘oooh its a bit too dark’. Being shunned by my art community made me what I am today though. I think If I could take a year off and concentrate on my acrylics I would- but I dont have enough time money or space to do it any more. All my paintings are being stored in a back room at a tattoo shop, when a friend opened a place he let me show my art there- but now he is big and has popular art there my work is kept out back under some crap- really should go get them back. sold a few from there though. wish I kept them now gutted.

Now make sure you check out the featured section to see both Godmachine and Mark Riddick’s work.
