Travis Lampe’s “Wee Epic Masterpiece Theatre” @ Rotofugi Gallery

This past weekend at the Rotofugi Gallery, two solo shows opened up. “Wee Epic Masterpiece Theatre” by Travis Lampe and “Beneath the Noise” by Dan May. Both are amazing exhibitions, but for this post I am going to focus on Travis’ show. All of the works in this show, save for the two prints, are all inspired by classical works of art. For an art historian (in progress) like myself, this show is filled with all sorts of eye candy. Classical works of art such as: Géricault’s “The Raft of the Medusa”, Jaques-Louis David’s “The Death of Marat”, Sandro Boticelli’s “The Return of Judith”, and Caravaggio’s “Medusa” have all been re-imagined by Travis with his signature characters and vivid color scheme.
While classical works may be boring to some, the content is often filled with exciting stories, allegories and fables. All of which are worthy of being retold. It is these stories, the inner meaning of art that holds onto us and allows the art to function as much more than just something pretty to look at.

Head on over and take a look at the full show. This is such an amazing show. I also like that Travis created a silkscreened frame that would be used for multiple works.

Original paintings by Scott Saw

Scott Saw has just put up some original paintings up for sale. There is a good amount of recent work, and even some that goes back to 2003. I particularly liked the portrait of Erika, shown first. He doesn’t often do portrait work such as this, but I think his style works well for it. The colors are nice and intense and the splatter/spray technique he has gives the work a good texture.

Head on over and check out the full list: Scott Saw Original Works

Preview: Alexandros Vasmoulakis @ Lebasse Projects

Coming this March 20th to Lebasse Projects in Culver City, CA is the first US solo exhibition entitled “Is Everybody Happy?” by Greek artist Alexandros Vasmoulakis. His art is quite amazing, and stated by the press release his “work is predominantly character based and these creations explore the core values of human nature such as love, desire, seduction and hate. His work is very much driven by his state of mind and will reflect the mood of any given day. He uses mixed media including both collage and paint to convey the relationships between these emotions.” I really like the second piece shown, “Die Kunst st Super” (The Art is Super). It has that classic ‘odalisque’ style figure in it, this one inspired by Edouard Manet’s “Olympia“.
Here are a few preview images from the show, after these head on over and take a look at the rest. If your in the area make sure to stop by.

Travis Louie prints @ Circus Posterus

After seeing the latest painting Travis has in the Lush Life 2 Exhibition, I went looking for some prints and other collectibles of his. While I am really hoping this new painting of his makes it way into print form, he has a dozen available prints over at Circus Posterus right now such as “Oliver Smiley” (first). In the ‘additional products’ section, you can find a very cool oversized postcard set for only $25. The set comes with 10 8.5″ x 11″ cardstock postcards with rounded edges, and you can add a Special Edition Mini “Mr. Griswald spoke for the fish” Giclee (shown second) Signed and numbered edition of 100 at 5.5″ x 8.5″ for only $15.

New “studies” by Audrey Kawasaki

Audrey Kawasaki has added a couple of new “study” pieces to her blog and I had to share them. She states “so ive been having some fun doing these small ‘studies’. i tried to be more loose with the marks, and i must say, i enjoyed it immensely! no matter the outcome, the process was really refreshing.” The outcome looks amazing. I have always loved more brushy, loose works. When done correctly the art has so much energy and movement to it; and as you can see by these pieces, not only did Audrey fully retain her signature figures, but has placed them in an exciting new environment.

Head over to her blog for the rest of the process pics: Audrey Kawasaki Blog

“Lush Life 2″ @ Roq La Rue Gallery

Last week, the “Lush Life 2″ group invitational opened at Roq La Rue in Seattle. The shows features new works by Joe Sorren, Chris Berens, Marion Peck, Kris Kuksi, Travis Louie, Brian Despain, John Brophy, Martin Wittfooth, Ryan Heshka, Michael Brown, Charlie Immer, Mandy Greer, Gail Potocki, Laurie Hogin, Boomer, Madeline Von Foerster, Ryan Heshka and more. How is that for a line-up? With so much amazing work in one gallery it makes me wish Seattle was just a little closer. The show isn’t fully online yet for those of us that weren’t able to make the reception, but there is a web preview you can check out. So far from the preview, all of the works are very strong, but I am particularly taken with Travis Louie’s “The Ghost Of Laura From The Reeds”. His paintings are insane in person, the level of detail is very impressive to say the least. I also like that he adds stories to each of his characters. I often did this with my mothers Cabinet photo and tintype collection, but my stories were not as entertaining as the ones Travis comes up with.

I really liked that a good majority of the artists in this show, are either inspired by classical themes, or paint in the style of classical masters. This is seen with the work of Madeline Von Foerster, Andrew Arconti and the “Lady Clown” from Marion Peck. That painting is so perfect, the color palette, the inspiration from Francisco Goya’s “La maja desnuda“, and the expression that clown face has. I really hope this is turned into a print soon.

David Choquette @ Last Rites Gallery

March 6th at the Last Rites Gallery two solo shows opened, one from Chris Peters and the other from David R. Choquette. Long time readers of the site might recognize David’s work from not only being a featured artist (here) but also having an amazing ‘Killer Klowns’ inspired painting in the ‘Attack of the B Movie Show‘. David has an great style, dark and surreal. The work for his solo show at Last Rites is now up on the site, along with Chris Peters’ new paintings. Here are a few from the show that I especially liked, make sure you head on over to the gallery to see the rest.

Review: Aaron Nagel “Marks” @ Shooting Gallery

Last weekend, March 6th, I made my way over the 7th Anniversary show over at the Shooting Gallery in SF. It has always been one of my favorite galleries to visit, as there is perfect lighting for photography and consistently good exhibitions. Opening that night was the latest solo show of Aaron Nagel entitled “Marks”. Right next door at the White Walls Gallery was also works from Kevin Cyr, Jessica Hess and upstairs at Gallery Three was new works by Jessica Whiteside.
