Opening up this Saturday, April 24th at the Joshua Liner Gallery is the latest solo show from Shawn Barber. Entitled “Tattooed Portraits: Chronicle”, this will be Shawn’s first solo exhibition in New York. The show features 30 new paintings, 8 of which are Watercolor paintings of figure studies and tattoo machines. I was hoping to see some of his watercolor works at his last solo show at the Shooting Gallery (reviewed), so I am happy to see that he has a good amount for this show. Looking at all of the works at once, with the help of the Liner Galleries new website features, you can see that this is a very strong and cohesive show. Not only do we get watercolor pieces, but also paintings of tattoo equipment, studio spaces, arm portraits, and even a series of hand self portraits.
There is some really outstanding works this time, such as the Portrait of Marisa Kakoulas (shown first), the twin painting of James and Tim Kern, and two paintings of Bob Tyrell. A monochromatic, multiple head study, and a color portrait of Bob screaming. There is also the head study of Jo Harrison, that I mentioned during the Shooting Gallery review; I was wondering when this painting would pop up.
