Scott Musgrove & Louie Cordero @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

This past Saturday, May 15th, the Jonathan Levine Gallery opened the latest solo show from Scott Musgrove entitled “How is the Empire?”, as well as the debut “Sacred Bones” show by Louie Cordero. This is Scott’s second solo show at the gallery and features new oil paintings, drawings, as well as some small and large-scale sculptural work. There is quite a lot of work in this show, and I love the idea that there is such a variety in mediums. Make sure to stop by and check out Louie Cordero’s work as well, as both shows are now online to view.

“Keith Haring” print by Shepard Fairey

Dropping this Thursday, May 20th is a new print by Shepard Fairey based on artist Keith Haring. This is an 18″ x 24″ screenprint on canvas, and will be limited to an edition of 450 for $70 each. Like the Blondie (previously featured), I think this is a great print dedicated to an influential artist, and “a portion of the sales go to the Keith Haring Foundation and Photographer Patrick McMullan.”

“Manfungus 1.3″ print by Christian Rex van Minnen

Gallery Nucleus has added some new prints to their online shop, one of which is “Manfungus 1.3″ by Christian Rex van Minnen. I was first taken in with van Minnen’s work due to the similarity to 16th century painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo, although I find the formers work more interesting. The print is a giclee on velvet fine art paper, 18″ x 24″, signed and numbered in an edition of 25.

R.I.P Frank Frazetta

This past Monday, May 10th, legendary artist Frank Frazetta passed away at age 82. Widely known as the godfather of fantasy illustration, Frank’s influence can be seen in the work of countless artists such as Ashley Wood, Simon Bisley, Glenn Barr, Dan Harding and many more. Often categorized as an illustrator, Frazetta was an artist worthy of any museums recognition and appreciation.

Back in November 2007, Pressure Printing released “Grandpa Cyclops” with Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh. Now they have officially released the companion piece, “Grandma Cyclops”. Each print is individually stained with gouache and ink, signed by the artist and placed in a custom resin frame with convex glass. Each print also comes with an embossed and perforated Certificate of Authenticity also signed by the artist. This print is limited to an edition of 50. Artist Profiles: Jenny Morgan

A fine artist working out of New York, Jenny Morgan got her MFA at the School of Visual Arts NY. She primarily paints oils on canvas, and focuses on portrait work. The figures in the paintings are not only rendered with great skill, but you can see that each portrait has something uniquely altered. It might be a color that is invading a portion of the face or arms, or areas that look as though they have either been sanded down, or not rendered past the underpainting. It’s an amazing effect, and what I find most interesting is that her portraits are filled with emotion and life, and these alterations do not cover up, or take over the work. Jenny has a few paintings with no alterations done to them, and they are just as powerful as the others. About her work Jenny states: “I manipulate the figure to expose the individual’s idiosyncrasies and create a physiological portrait. Working with people from my own life as subject matter allows me to hone in on specifics of their character and present their personalities as I experience them.”
