Tom Haubrick has just added a new book to his Etsy shop. “Drifters” is over thirty pages of line drawings, that was made for the Comic Con, and all leftovers are now available. The book is limited to 50, signed and numbered, and first 5 orders come with a limited artist proof print.
Virtu Art Gallery has released some new prints, one of which is by Vania Zouravliov who is featured in the latest issue of Hi Fructose. “Aaliyah” is a 14.75″ x 11″ Varnished Giclee on Hahnemulhe Bamboo Paper, signed and numbered in an edition of 30. Each edition also comes with a certificate of authenticity. There will also be a deluxe canvas edition coming soon.

This Wednesday beginning at Noon EST, Arabella Proffer will be having an art sale. This sale is not only in order to clear up some space, but also to help her medical expenses as she recently found out she has Cancer. Ana Bagayan has added some new prints to her Etsy shop. The image was made a new drawing Ana will have in the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s fundraiser coming this July 31st. Ana has mad a very limited edition run of prints of the “Sea Nanny” drawing. The prints are 11″ x 14″ on Rives BFK paper, signed and numbered in an edition of only 5. Each print is also hand embellished with watercolors.

Last night a friend dragged me to a screening of the new Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World movie. I barely knew what the movie was about, as I tend to be locked away from the rest of the world for too long, but I checked it out anyway. I have to say the movie was pretty amazing. There was some great action sequences, 8-bit music, and it was directed by Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz). Oni Press, that put out the original books, got Daniel Danger, Kevin Tong, Aesthetic Apparatus, and Hellen Jo to make posters based on the fictional bands that were in the movie. Most of the posters were sold during the Comic Con, but Kevin Tong has just added some of his “Sex Bob-Omb” posters to his online shop. The posters are 18″ x 24″, 4 color screen-prints, regular ink limited to 400 and metallic ink is limited to 600. Each print is signed and numbered for only $20 each. In the past week or so, a bunch of artists have been created original works and prints and auctioning them off to help out the family of Ryan August (I Want Your Skull). The Decoder Ring Design Concern has also jumped in and is having a huge auction of prints. All of the money goes to the Ryan’s family, so head on over and see what is being sold.

Just before the San Diego Comic Con started I posted about a new print released by J.R. Goldberg (here), who has just teamed up with LTD Tee to release another print/shirt box set. The Kelvingrove Museum of Glasgow had an installation up by artist Sophie Cave that was too good not to share. I’m not exactly sure when the exhibition was up, and for how long, but the images of the 50 Floating Heads she installed is making its rounds throughout the net. The artist installed 50 floating heads, each one with an expression frozen, something that apparently was freaking out some of the patrons of the museum. Reminds me a bot of the busts that were created by Franz Xavier Messerschmidt (featured).
Shain Erin, one of the previously featured artists of the month, has just added an amazing new hand-made sculpture. Shain has done a series of zombie dolls, mummies, ghosts, and my favorite are the ones that are inspired by certain conditions, such as Hypertrichosis. The first doll that he made with this condition had less hair, and different looking eyes (see here). This new one entitled “Babette the Beastly Beauty” is simply amazing. The doll comes on a wood stand, and every detail even down to the dress was handmade.

Opening tonight, July 24th at the Congregation Gallery in Hollywood, CA is a group show entitled “The Black Plague Art Show”. Curated by Cam Rackam, this show has a very impressive lineup with new works from: Jason Soles, Buddy Nestor, Cam Rackam, Chris Peters, Christopher Conte, Dan Harding, Ian Ward, Sean Chappell, Terry Wolfinger, Vincent Castiglia, Lacey Bryant, Karl Persson, Nikko Hurtado, Larkin, and many more. Of course we all know the Black Plague to be one of the deadliest pandemics in human history, but one of the elements you will see in many of these works is the outfits the plague doctors would wear. It consisted of a wide brimmed hat (a signifier of being a doctor), a long black overcoat (to minimize exposure), a cane for examining and ushering people around, and most notable the bird’s beak shaped mask. This mask worked similar to a gas mask, as impure air was thought to spread the disease. The mask had red eyepieces, thought to block the doctor from evil, and the beak would be filled with herbs or spices that would reduce the smell and again block impure air.
It’s an outstanding show, and had me surprised quite a few times. Dan Harding’s new piece “La Bella Morte Nera” (or The Beautiful Back Death), is so amazing, his work just keeps getting better. I also liked Jason Soles “Bell Jar Baby” and various masks. Lacey Bryant also has some great, illustrative pieces that really take the idea of the Black Plague as inspiration. “A Surprise for Mum” has the rats that helped spread the plague, and “Pocketful of Posies” is pretty creepy as well. The art collective known as Faile recently went to Lisboa, Portugal for their Temple Project, which is a giant sculptural installation that has been 2 years in the making. This is an amazing project. The classical design fits in seamlessly with the surrounding city, and shows that contemporary artists can make some truly inspiring works. Dflektor.com and Stick2Target, the portuguese street art site, both have a huge amount of photos showing every angle of this temple.
