“Playboy Redux” @ Rotofugi Gallery

The Play Enterprise and Warhol Museum asked over 20 artist to reinterpret the classic bunny imagery. The show as first shown at the Warhol Museum in Pittsburg, but has been given a second go round at the Rotofugi Gallery. The participating list of artists is amazing: Jennybird Alcantara, Glenn Barr, Gary Baseman, Tim Biskup, Brian Ewing, Jeremy Fish, Mike Giant, Ken Keirns, Jeremiah Ketner, Frank Kozik, Travis Lampe, Tara McPherson, Lisa Petrucci, Bonni Reid, Isabel Samaras, Andrew Schoultz, Jeremy Tinder, and many more. Many of the paintings look pretty spectacular, and fit the Playboy theme very well. I especially like Glenn Barr’s, Jeremy Fish, Tara McPherson, Keith Weesner, Ken Keirns, and Isabel Samaras all of which are shown below. After you take a look at these, keep your eye on the galleries site for the full show to surface.

New work by J.R. Golberg

J.R. Goldberg has been busy making some new original paintings for a show opening this weekend in Ottawa, Ontario. The show is called “Seduction of the Idiots” and as stated on the site is “what can happen when comic and cartoon addiction is not dealt with early enough”. J.R. made four original paintings for the show, each one is acrylic on 6″x6″ wood panels. The collection is entitled “The Bloodies” and includes “Mashy” the Mallet, “Jabby” the Bottle, “Choppy” the Cleaver, and “Poppy” the Gun.” It looks as though these might also make it into screen-print form if there is enough demand. So head over to JR’s site and tell her you want a set of these as prints.

“Bolt Cougher” print by Jhonen Vasquez

Gallery Nucleus has just released a new print by Jhonen Vasquez. The print is a 19″ x 13″ giclee on watercolor paper, and the first 100 prints will be signed by the artist. The prints are only $40 each and are open edition, so there is no rush to get one, unless of course you want one signed. Love the colors in this one, and I am sure it would look quite dashing in a snazzy black frame.

Interview: Jason Edmiston

For this months, slightly late double feature, I was able to get an interview with Canadian illustrator Jason Edmiston. There is also a nice gallery featuring 20 images of his work, so make sure you check that out after reading the interview.

CM: Can you tell us a bit how you got started in art, did you go to any art school for your training?

Jason: Not sure how far you want me to go back, but I actually knew I was going to be an artist for a living since I was a child. I never thought I would do anything else, and luckily it worked out. I had regular public school and high school art classes, but after that I went to the Ontario College of Art (now called OCAD because of an increased design department). It was a four year program, where the first year focused on foundations of art, and you specialized in an area over the next three years. I went into Communication and Design with a focus on illustration. Although school was a good way to get exposed to and prepared for the life of a working artist, I felt that I still needed to tighten my portfolio to get regular paying gigs. After college, I continued to teach myself through trial and error practice, and by pouring over my large library of art books.
