Weekly Art Search #4

May 14, 2007

This week I decided to go looking for some photography. There are a lot of really great photographers out there right now, making works that are just as powerful as any painting or sculpture.

Here are the photos that I found:

“Patty” by Munky Haus
“Yesterday “by Jeremy Brotherton
“My white curbstone” by Bogdan Zwir
“Cloud” by Quentin Lenw
“Pork” hy Rebecca Tillett
“Nowhere Fast” by Gayla Trail

The artist Natalie Shau has a new website over at Carbonmade. The site looks great, and it has a very good selection of work to look at.

Head on over, you can also find her on deviantart and on myspace. She has also shown at the Strychnin gallery, a great gallery that has shown many fine artists.

aotd: Self Portrait

May 12, 2007

self_sarah_bereza.jpg
Going along with the opening of Sarah Bereza’s show, I also decided to have one of her works the Art of the Day. Its her self portrait, and is my favorite work she has done.

I love the colors she used in the face, her brushwork is excellent. Most of all the emotion is what gets me, the face shows a lot of emotion and just inst another portrait that shows a person smiling.

Sarah Bereza show @ Jack the Pelican Presents

May 12, 2007

If your in the Brooklyn area, or anywhere near it, you might want to stop by and check out the new show by Sarah Bereza. Its at Jack the Pelican Presents. You can find the directions at the site below.

I saw her work at The Lab in San Francisco, you have to see her work in person to appreciate how much she puts into each piece. I really dig her style, her frames are one of a kind.

aotd: “Diamonds, Deer”

I was looking at the pieces in the “Smitten” show, and this sent me a mission to find some work of a similar vein. I found a piece by Naomi Nowak that I really like. Its quite elegant, but at the same time, pretty twisted. Take a close look at the images (click thumbnail) and you’ll see what I mean.

Smitten Show tonight at Thinkspace

May 11, 2007

Tonight at 7 o’clock is the Smitten show at Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles. The show features work by Audrey Kawasaki, Stella Im Hultberg, Amy Sol, Kukula & Brandi Milne. It’s going to be quite a show, and of course I won’t be there for it :( … The show will go on to June 1st, so if you can’t see in person tonight, try to in the next month.

Prints will be available online as well as streaming video of the show during the opening. I’m sure the prints will sell out in minutes, so if your trying to get one, be ready.

Thinkspace Gallery They have the works from the show available to view now, and it looks like the show is pretty much all sold out. A few pieces are left.

If you like the work of the above artists, I also recommend checking out the following artists:
Sarah Joncas | Kanitta M. | Camilla d’Errico | Bluetack | Hakan Photography

Art of the Day: “Survival of the Fittest”

May 10, 2007

Survival_of_the_Fittest_by_jasinski
So along with the Weekly Art Search, I thought it would be cool to have a featured image each day. This will hopefully expose some new art, as well as calm down my auction posts.

This first piece is is by Aaron Jasinski, it’s called “Survival of the Fittest” and was one of the pieces at the latest I am 8 Bit show.
I really dig his painting style, his brushwork is exciting and his use of color really makes his paintings look more like oil work than acrylic.

Head on over to his site to see more work: Homepage
He also has a few originals for sale on his Deviantart blog: Jasinksi Originals

Runaway Brain - Mickey Mouse

May 9, 2007

vcdmickey.jpgneonmickey.jpg
I’ve never been the biggest fan of Mickey Mouse, I like my animation a little bit nuttier (Ren & Stimpy, Futurama, etc). But while looking through the KidRobot catalog, I saw a new vinyl toy that looks amazing. The above “Runaway Brain” Mickey VCD character is based off of a 7 minute short that was made in 1995. This “maniac” Mickey is created when a monster (Julius) and Mickey switch brains.

These have got to be the coolest looking Mickeys I have ever seen, if Mickey looked like this all the time, I would be an avid fan. However in the animated short, he’s crazy for just minutes, if that. So this vinyl toy, and a few other like it can let you enjoy the maniac Mickey full time.

4 Ben Templesmith pages

May 7, 2007

Right now there are 4 Ben Templesmith pages on auction. It looks like all 4 pages are from Singularity 7, and that when you buy one of them, the proceeds go to help artists that have been….screwed. Or as they put it “to help freelance comic creators struggling due to the unethical behavior of an immoral publisher”.

Sounds good to me, and the pages look great. The pictures don’t seem like the do the work justice, but you can clearly see how dynamic Templesmith can draw.

Weekly Art Search #3

May 7, 2007

For this weeks search I went looking for work that showed really unique drawing skills, and characters. There are some artists out there that really have a unique way of drawing, a style that is sometimes so out-there that once your infected with it, you can recognize it with no effort at all.

Ken Garduno
Jinyoung Shin
Sean Metcalf
Jérôme Mireault
Travis Millard
Josh Taylor
Benjamin Cee
Vidar Cornelius

Just a bunch of really cool styles here. It’s a nice change of pace when you see art like this, I think this is why i’m so hooked on artists like, Charles Burns, Ben Templesmith & Ashley Wood.
