Best ways to show your art on the web (Revised)

This article is inspired by an article over at ‘Lines and Colors’ called: “How Not to Display Your Artwork on the Web”. It’s a great article, quite sarcastic but there are some great tips there. In the many months that I have been running the Creep Machine, looking for featured artists, images for art of the day & prints and originals for sale, I have seen some amazing web sites and some really bad ones. So I decided to write down some tips, to make sure that your art gets seen. (Last Edited Jan 2012) Of course this whole article is filled with my opinions, but as someone who spends hours a day looking at art as a fan and webmaster, I have collected some great tips and tricks to make showing and selling your work online an enjoyable process. So let’s get started. Where should you host your work?...

“Flotsam’s Wonder World” documentary by Colin M. Day

There is just a few days left of Mike Shine’s “Flotsam’s Wonder World” show at 941 Geary Gallery in SF, so I thought I would share this video that gives a look into this amazing exhibition. Documentarian for the Warholian, Colin M. Day created a great video showing the art, preparation of the show, and the events that went on during the reception. It’s the perfect video to watch if you missed the reception, or like me came in a little too late.

New work by Tom Bagshaw

Tom Bagshaw will have two new work in the upcoming “Eyes Wide Shut” show November 12th, put on by Fine Grime UK. “All the Devils” and “Frankie” are both giclee prints mounted on board and hand varnished. “All the Devils” will have some hand embellishments added to it. It seems as though the Halloween spirit has not only prompted some artists to make some great horror themed works, but The Bride of Frankenstein seems to be a popular choice this year.

Maria Checchia

Maria Checchia is an artist from Italy, who is also one part of a duo named Caktus&Maria. Together they make beautiful, photorealistic murals with spray-paint; and alone she makes some pretty amazing paintings in a variety of mediums such as oils, watercolors, ink, and graphite. It looks as though a majority of the mural work the duo create, are self portraits, while Maria’s solo work seems to be inspired possibly from magazines and images found on the net. You can follow their work on a blog for the duo here: Caktus&Maria @ Blogspot, or head on over to flickr and see all of the work there.

“Leeuwenhart” by Chris Berens at Roq La Rue

This past Friday, October 22nd, the highly anticipated solo show “Leeuwenhart” (Lion Heart) by Chris Berens was opened at Roq La Rue Gallery in Seattle. It’s been almost two years since his last solo exhibition, “Go West” took place at the gallery. These new works are more focused on nature, and include a new characters in this world he has created, Emma Leeuwenhart Berens, his new daughter. With every new show and painting, it’s still hard to believe that Chris uses only ink on photo paper to create these dreamy, photo-realistic works. If you are in the area this is a show you must see in person, otherwise the full show is now online to view.

EGo and Creeps show @ Flatcolor Gallery

A little late on this one, but there is still some time to catch these shows at Flatcolor Gallery in Seattle. EGO’s latest solo show “Eventually, You run out of tomorrows…”, and the Creeps group show featuring work by Larkin, Augie Pagan, Parksid, Chris Sheridan, Brian White, and Derek Noble. This is the perfect show to check out this October, and should be seen simply because the art is that amazing. Last year EGO had a solo show at the gallery and created some beautiful pieces, this show is a great followup.

“Rapture Suit” by Robert Hardgrave

Robert Hardgrave will have a solo show this coming December at the David B Smith Gallery, but he was nice enough to send over a project he has been working on that will be in this new show. As stated by Robert: “Rapture Suit” is a project where leftovers from failed paintings were used to construct an all encompassing outfit. Unable to see where we are going, we can only view upwards into the unknown.” The entire suit looks to be made from pieces of acrylic on canvas painting, that have been reconstructed. It’s an amazing idea, as it not only saves the pieces of so-called “failed paintings” from being tossed or painted over, but turns the pieces into a new 3-dimensional work of art. I can only imagine how colorful this suit will be once the show is released.
