New drawings by Mia

Coming this Saturday, September 25th, to the Corey Helford Gallery is a show featuring new works by Korin Faught, Krista Huot, and Mia. Three very exciting artists each with a unique style, this should be a great show. Mia recently added some of the drawings that she will be showing over at her blog. The drawings range from 6.5″ x 6.5″ up to 29.25” x 22”. I like how you can see her drawing style tighten and loosen up in different areas of the drawings, but either way she has a very elegant style. Make sure to check out Mia’s blog to see more works, keep up to date with shows, and even see some sketches.

Mike Shine “Flotsam’s Wonder World” @ 941 Geary

This past weekend, Mike Shine’s highly anticipated solo show “Flotsam’s Wonder World” opened at the new 941 Geary gallery in San Francisco. The reception opened at 7pm, and for whatever reason I decided to take my time getting there and successfully missed the live music and performance that was put on. By the time missus creep and myself made it to the gallery, around 8:30pm, the gallery was already packed. I should have known better and made sure we got there quicker.

The gallery space is very large, so I was curious as to how the artist would use the space. I did hear a bit of how there would be some big installation pieces in the show, but I had no idea it would be like this. What Shine did was actually create another world that opened up once you walked in the gallery. A carnival full of color, nostalgia, and mythology was there before your eyes. It was a lot to take in, with the amount of people there along with the staggering amount of artwork to be seen.

“Weirdo Noir” book by Matt Dukes Jordan

The author of the book “Weirdo Deluxe”, is back with a new book talking the gothic and dark art scene. The book is 9″ x 9″, 192 pages and features work from more than 20 artists such as Attaboy, Ana Bagayan, Glenn Barr, Jonathan Bergeron, Ray Ceasar, Jason d’Aquino, Bob Dob, Alex Gross, Sarah Joncas, Annette Hassell, Fred Harper, Dan Kennedy, Laurie Lipton, Travis Louie, Tara McPherson, Skot Olsen, Nathan Ota, Annie Owens, Anthony Pontius, Isabel Samaras, Shag, Dani Tull, Brian Viveros, and Edward Walton Wilcox.
I enjoyed Weirdo Deluxe quite a bit, and this book seems like a good followup. I’m not sure if I agree about the “noir”, or as stated in the description “artists who have embraced the dark side, employing gothic themes in their art.” There are a few artists in that list that have dark works for sure, but maybe I just have a different definition of “dark and gothic”.

Kris Kuksi – Divination and Delusion Pre-Order

The Beinart Surreal Collective, has just sent a new book to the publishers to be released this coming December. A new book on the works of Kris Kuksi entitled “Divination and Delusion”. The book was to be released this September, but 40 extra pages were added so the book as been pushed back, but with the extra pages the wait will be well worth it. The work of Kuksi is absolutely mind-blowing; to see these works in person is really something special. While a book is rarely a good replacement for seeing the art in person, this book allows one to not only add a great to book to their collection, but to really delve into the intricacies of Kuksi’s work. Each assemblage is so hyper-detailed, its often hard in a gallery setting to really see everything in each work displayed. The book is in pre-order, so head on over and make sure you get a copy.
