Best ways to show your art on the web (Revised)

This article is inspired by an article over at ‘Lines and Colors’ called: “How Not to Display Your Artwork on the Web”. It’s a great article, quite sarcastic but there are some great tips there. In the many months that I have been running the Creep Machine, looking for featured artists, images for art of the day & prints and originals for sale, I have seen some amazing web sites and some really bad ones. So I decided to write down some tips, to make sure that your art gets seen. (Last Edited Jan 2012) Of course this whole article is filled with my opinions, but as someone who spends hours a day looking at art as a fan and webmaster, I have collected some great tips and tricks to make showing and selling your work online an enjoyable process. So let’s get started. Where should you host your work?...

Artist Profiles: Jenny Morgan

A fine artist working out of New York, Jenny Morgan got her MFA at the School of Visual Arts NY. She primarily paints oils on canvas, and focuses on portrait work. The figures in the paintings are not only rendered with great skill, but you can see that each portrait has something uniquely altered. It might be a color that is invading a portion of the face or arms, or areas that look as though they have either been sanded down, or not rendered past the underpainting. It’s an amazing effect, and what I find most interesting is that her portraits are filled with emotion and life, and these alterations do not cover up, or take over the work. Jenny has a few paintings with no alterations done to them, and they are just as powerful as the others. About her work Jenny states: “I manipulate the figure to expose the individual’s idiosyncrasies and create a physiological portrait. Working with people from my own life as subject matter allows me to hone in on specifics of their character and present their personalities as I experience them.”

Rue Morgue Magazine is always a must have for any horror fan, and now the 100th issue looks as though it will be a great collectible for art fans as well. Creep Machine was given an exclusive preview of the art that will be found in this milestone issue. I’m sure you will recognize most of the names that are participating in this feature, and will make your way to the local bookstore to pick up a copy. Here is an image of the cover, and the press release, make sure you click the link for the art.

To celebrate their milestone 100th issue, Rue Morgue commissioned sixteen of the best dark artists, established and up and coming, to each create an original piece that exemplifies a personal nightmare, and tell us why the work haunts them. The results will scare you too. Curated by Gary Pullin, The Nightmare Gallery is their biggest art feature to date and features new works by Chet Zar, Travis Louie, Bob Tyrrell, William Basso, Jason D’Aquino, Simon Marsden, Jason Edmiston, Joshua Hoffine, Nat Jones, Chad Michael Ward, Dan Harding and Kris Kuksi. “Girls, Girls, Girls” print and show @ Phone Booth Gallery

This past Saturday at the Phone Booth Gallery, the “Girls, Girls, Girls” group exhibition opened up. Artwork by Bree Dentice, Camilla Taylor, Elisa Tanaka, Jennie Cotterill, Nancy Chiu and many more is now up in the site. A print has also been released based on one the paintings by Jennie Cotterill, aptly entitled “Girls, Girls, Girls”. Jennie had three paintings in the show, all acrylic on floating wood panel. I am now hooked on Jennie’s style of painting. Very brushy, amazing colors, and has a great way of rendered those figures. The print is 11″ x 17″, giclee on 300 gsm Archival Museo Cotton Rag paper, signed and numbered in an edition of 50.

Art Whino new website and sale

Art Whino has just launched a new version of their homepage. If you remember the last page it was pretty much all flash based, which I am not a fan of, but this new version is back to html. I know animations and effects are fun, but simpler sites are easier to see on mobile devices, easier to move around in, and most importantly allow the viewer to focus on the most important thing; the art! There is also a new store layout, that allows you to browser by artist, see new arrivals, or use the search field to find what you are looking for.

For all the fans of the Creep Machine, Art Whino has supplied a special code, “whinoslovecreeps”, that if you use from now until May 16th you can get anything in the shop for 10% off. Looking around there is some amazing work to be had, such as “Headlong Buckle Buster” by Paul Chatem (shown).

“Debbie Harry” print by Shepard Fairey

This Friday, May 7th at a random time, Shepard Fairey will be releasing a new print entitled “Debbie Harry”. This canvas screen print is from a photo originally taken by Bobby Grossman. The print is 18″ x 24″, signed and numbered in an edition of 450 for $70 each. I haven’t been too interested in the last few prints that Shepard has released, but I think that this is one is well worth the look.

“Flora” print by James Jean

The ever talented James Jean has added a new limited edition print to his online shop. “Flora” is an image out right out of ones of James’ sketchbooks. Form what I have seen he sketches into those Moleskine books, and uses this amazing pen called the SKB-1000 ( at least that’s what certain art forums say). The print features two pages of sketches, all of which are various flora with some figurative elements thrown in. The print is 9.5″ x 12″ on Hahnemühle Fine Art Paper, signed, numbered, and embossed in an edition of 100 for $65 each.
