Artists Profiles: Andrew Wodzianski

An artist working out of Washington DC, Andrew Wodzianski graduated with a Masters from the Maryland Institute College of Art. His work has been published the Washington Post and shown at galleries such as Art Whino, Fraser Gallery and more. He works in a variety of mediums; inks, gouache, marker, acrylic and oils. His mixed media works have a more graphic feel to them, while his oil paintings tend to be more classical in style. It is his paintings that caught my eye from the start. You’ll first notice looking in his gallery that he has quite a few series of works. From his muted and washed out “House” series to the “Sequences” and “Coulrophobia” (fear of clowns) series. I really enjoyed the “Lucha Libre! / Persephone & Other Paintings” section as well as his Earlier work which is the most classical out of the bunch. The painting that stands out the most to me is “Paul” (shown), which was inspired by DH Lawrence’s “Rocking Horse Winner” and Caravaggio’s “Conversion on the way to Damascus”. It’s a great idea and painted beautifully.

“The Multi-Plane” group show @ Corey Helford Gallery

This past Saturday, December 12th at the Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City the “Multi-Plane” group show opened up. For the past few weeks I have been seeing some previews of some of the pieces in the show, one of the great reasons to check out artists blogs now and again. The idea of the show is that “Each of these paintings is an original work created on two layers of glass and a masonite panel background, emulating the multi-plane process developed by animators in the 1930’s to create depth in animated features. Each surface is separated by 3/8 of an inch and the entire painting is housed in a custom-made frame.”

Click the read more to see more images and short review of the show. After that head over to the site and check out the rest of the show:

“BourbonRat” print by Justin Kamerer

Justin Kamerer (angryblue) has just released a new print. “Bourbonrat” is a 2 color screenprint, 18″ x 18″ signed and numbered in an edition of around 60. Some of the paper was damaged in the printing, so the edition is roughly 60-70. The print can be had for the low price of $20 + shipping. Justin says that this print is “the most accurate portrayal of Christmas spirit there is!”

“Wood Nymph” print by Naoto Hattori

Naoto Hattori has just added a new print to his online shop. “Wood Nymph” is 15″ x 16″ on fine art paper, signed and numbered in an edition of 50 for $150. It’s one of the more busy prints that he has released in a while now. There is a lot of detail and information going on here. Not quite my thing, but I still love his work.

“Small Stuff 3″ cash and carry exhibition @ Bear and Bird Gallery

The “Small Stuff 3″ show opened at the Bear and Bird Boutique and Gallery last November 22nd, the show will run up until January 9, 2010. The feature of this show is that all of the work is cash and carry, so you buy it and then walk out with it. If your buying the work online it immediately gets shipped to you. Great idea and perfect for those still shopping for gifts, or happily being a Scrooge and just buying stuff for yourself. The show features work by Ana Galvan, Danielle Estefan, Danny Brito, Dékal, Erik Jones, Naoto Hattori, Phil Noto, Shannon Bonatakis, Skot Olsen, Bill Carman and many more. The majority of the art is small, so you won’t find too many outrageous prices save for the Naoto Hattori. He commonly makes smaller works and the detail levels are skill is well worth the price. Here are a few examples of what can be had. For the full show chck out the gallery’s site.

“Accursed Ugliness” print by Garry Booth

Found this killer print over at Gigposters classifieds. Garry Booth was approached to take care of print released for cult movie screenings at the Art Theatre in Long Beach, CA. So I imagine we will be seeing prints much like those of Mondotees celebrating these classic movies and giving fans some art to collect in the process. These screening nights are called Mondo Celluloid by the way. This first print is entitled “Accursed Ugliness” and features Lon Chaney’s Phantom of the Opera. The print itself is a 2 color screenprint, 18″ x 24″ signed and numbered in an edition of 50 for only $20 a pop.

Preview: Chris Mars @ Billy Shire Fine Arts

One of the shows that I have been waiting to see for the past few months is the upcoming solo exhibition of Chris Mars. The show, In Preparation of Barrier Transcendence will take place at the Billy Shire Fine Arts this coming December 12th and will run until January 2nd 2010. As Chris states in his bio ““It is my intent to instigate the viewer to look beyond surface attributes be they attributes of my paintings or of society at large. I seek through my work to break down the tendency that exists to prejudge and to move away from xenophobia..” One of the things that draws me to Mars’ work is that he doesn’t shy away from the social and political issues that we are currently dealing with. Art is an effective way of showing the viewer what the world around them might actually be like, the truths no matter how scary they might be. Creating imagery that is so enjoyable to look at makes digesting these truths effortless. The show has over 20 paintings, a nice variety of larger and smaller 9″ x 11″ portraits, one of which entitled “The Upriser” (shown first) reminds me of the iconic photograph of Sharbat Gula on the cover of National Geographic in 1985. I am a big fan of his smaller portrait work, and do hope that he one day decides to release a limited edition run of one of them.

Floating World Comics in Portland, Oregon has some original artwork by Al Columbia that they will be releasing for sale during the coming weeks. If your a fan of Al’s work this might be one of the few times that you can get original art. Comic Art Collective has a section for original work from Al, but there is rarely anything for sale there. Originals for sale from Leslie Ditto

Leslie Ditto has just posted two original paintings for sale. The paintings are being sold in order to help out a friend, so this is a good opportunity to help Leslie out and score some beautiful original works. Both paintings are oil on oval canvas, 20″ x 24″ and do not come framed. The paintings “Back Stage” and “Exit Stage Left” were first shown in a “circus freak” themed show at a gallery in Connecticut. From the looks of the auction Leslie also guarantees delivery before Christmas.

Preview: “Hajimari. a prelude” by Audrey Kawasaki @ Jonathan Levine

Coming this Saturday, December 12th to the Jonathan Levine Gallery is the latest show exhibition from Audrey Kawasaki entitled “Hajimari. a prelude.” The show will feature 20 new works and from the preview images Audrey posted on her blog, this is going to be an amazing show. A majority of the work looks like she has continued with some of the more “filled” works such as those seen at show at Copro Nason a while back. I was also happy to see some of the more erotic works of hers making a comeback. She has a very elegant way of adding a little eroticism without it seeming trashy. One of the preview shots as seen below, features some skeletal and anatomical figures, which I was very happy to see. Looking at her graphite and oil works, one can see that Audrey has keen understanding of the figure and her unique style of displaying them is what makes her art so addicting.

Head on over for a full look at the preview images: Audrey Kawasaki Preview
