aotd: “Vengeful Dunces” by Alex Kuno

March 27, 2008

vengefuldunces_alexkuno.jpgWith the B Movie show approaching quickly, I thought I would use the Art of the Day section to start featuring art from the participating artists of the show. I’ve seen a majority of the art for the show, and I’m blown away. There is some really amazing work and it has all far exceeded my expectations for this show.

So today’s piece is from Alex Kuno, he submitted a really fun piece for the show. The one shown above is an earlier work. This piece is 8″x10″ and I believe is watercolor and maybe even some acrylic paint. I really love the way Alex paints faces, the style of drawing added with the colors he uses really creates this timeless illustrative quality to his work. The scenes are always twisted and surreal. I’m really happy to have him in this show.

If you would like to see a preview of the show, message me and I will send you a link I have created for pre-sale. Otherwise, make sure you head on over and check out the rest of Alex’s work.

aotd: “Squid” by Andy B. Clarkson

Today’s art of the day is from Ohio artist, Andy B. Clarkson. He has some upcoming shows at Bar of Modern Art, and Lyle Gallery in Columbus, OH.

He has an amazing surreal style, so it’s no surprise that he will be featured soon on the Beinart Surreal Art Collective. I think his art will fit perfectly there. This piece is made graphite and acrylic, I think the two mediums work great together. The pencil work alone is top notch. I mean look at the eyes, teeth and hands. Perfect.

art of the day: “Untitled” by David R. Choquette

March 17, 2008

untitled_davidrchoquette.jpg
Today’s piece is from Montral based tattooist David R. Choquette. Most of his paintings and drawings are quite small, but they are packed with details. From his bio on the Beinart site, it says that he obsesses over every square inch. I can believe that, if you look close at his work there is amazing texture and subtle details. For instance, the skin in this piece looks like you can see the blue tint of blood beneath the flesh.

His work has that same kind of haunting feel and vibe that Chet Zar, Karl Persson & even Zdzislaw Beksinski has. David is also one of the artists that will be showing work at the Attack of the B Movie show. I’ve been able to see the piece that will be in the show and it looks amazing. Just to give a teaser, the piece David is showing is based on “Killer Klowns From Outer Space”.

Today’s piece is from Janine A Perry, who up until a while ago was working in in the advertising world. She decided the corporate world wasn’t for her so she made a change, and is now concentrating on her art. Looking at her art I think it was a wise decision.

She has an amazing surreal style to her paintings, I can already imagine some of the galleries that will be interested in showing her work. She is also quite skilled with drawings as well. If you head over to her site you can see all of the work she has done so far, and even pick up a print of her amazing pencil work.

Keep an eye on her here:

I don’t post enough sketches as art of the day, so here is one by Laura Wächter an artist out of Spain.

Laura has an amazing style. Her work has that timeless quality to it, much like Scott Radke, Claudia Drake & Cristina Beller has. Your just not sure what era it comes from, which ads to the overall surreal quality of it. I love the expression on her face in this one.

aotd: “Crucifixion 001″ by R.S. Connett

CRUCIFIXION_001_by_vmaximus.jpg
Today’s art of the day is from R.S. Connet, otherwise known as Vomitus Maximus. Much like Jeff Soto and many other artists, Connett is worrried about the future of our world and what we are doing to it. Jeff Soto’s last show at the Jonathan Levine Gallery was pretty much centered around this idea as well, with Connett’s work though you get the idea as clear as a firm slap on the face.

Looking at this piece it’s quite clear that whatever is going on is bad. The sky reminds me of my hometown and it’s awful air quality. Just looking at this make my lungs constrict. I was just noticing today people were walking around in shorts, jogging and enjoying the sun. The whole time I was tripping out. It’s only March and flowers are blooming and sneezes are plentiful. This shouldn’t be a problem, but where I live it should be foggy right now. I’m glad artists like R.S. Connett are also disturbed by what is going on, and all that seems to go unnoticed.

For more of R.S. Connett’s amazing, surreal paintings check out his homepage. He also has a huge amount of prints to choose from.

I_LOVE_YOU_by_aleksandracupcake.jpg
Today’s piece is from Aleksandra Marchocka an illustrator out of Warsaw, Poland. Not only does she do digital work but if you look in the artists gallery, you can see that she can also paint very well.

The colors in a lot of her illustrations have that same kind of “candy” feel to them, much like Tara McPherson’s work. I could really picture Aleksandra doing some poster art as well. If I had a band I would love to have her work promoting the music. This piece is about how the Grim Reaper loves the tooth fairy. I love the concept of the piece.

Take a loo at her gallery, there really is some killer work there. Hopefully we will see her worn start to make it’s way around the gig posters type of sites. If that’s what she wants to do of course.

Bjork_by_doublenape.jpg
It pretty much rained the whole weekend where I live, so the best thing to do was to relax and listen to music. I was looking around to see if anyone had made any paintings inspired by Bjork and found this one.

I love it when an artist makes a portrait of someone and doesn’t try to make it look as lifelike and “photographic” as possible. You can clearly see who this is supposed to be, and it has a unique quality to it and the artists voice is shown in the work. This painting is done by Gregory Dubois, and it looks like his page hasn’t been updated in a while. No clue where he is now, but he has some great work on his page. Kurt Kobain, Audrey Hepburn, Stephen King, James Dean & more. All of them look great.

If you would like to check out Greg’s work and maybe see if you can get in touch with him, check his page here: Greg Dubois Illustration

aotd: “The Death of Fiction”

Today’s art of the day is an oil painting by Matt S. Bennett, an artist out of Jacksonville, Florida.

The painting is oil on canvas, and is a huge 36″ x 48″. I have seen a few pictures of this painting and it doesn’t show here but the black area has quite a lot of texture in it. That’s the one drawback of viewing paintings in photos and especially the internet, is that you loose all these subtle details. I love the overall feel to this painting, it has that Caravaggio look to it. Like the scene you are witnessing is being revealed to you through the murky black of the background. This also has to be one of the cooler likenesses of Edgar Allen Poe I have seen in a while.

If you would like to see more of Matthew’s work, head on over to his homepage.

I was visiting Varnish Art Gallery in San Francisco, and was able to see this piece in person. So I thought I would feature it as it’s an amazing painting and is the first time I am able to talk about a piece I saw up close for “Art of the Day”.

First of all the painting is huge, 35″ x 58″. And although the image doesn’t show it very well the colors make this piece really stand out. I noticed it from the bottom floor, it basically slapped me the face. It’s oil on wood and looks amazing. The wings have this great transparent quality to them. The frame really finishes this piece off so well. I love it when people use frames that don’t look like they were just picked up at the art store. It just adds a nice touch to it all. Michael Hussar uses custom frames, as does Sarah Bereza.
