It pretty much rained the whole weekend where I live, so the best thing to do was to relax and listen to music. I was looking around to see if anyone had made any paintings inspired by Bjork and found this one.

I love it when an artist makes a portrait of someone and doesn’t try to make it look as lifelike and “photographic” as possible. You can clearly see who this is supposed to be, and it has a unique quality to it and the artists voice is shown in the work. This painting is done by Gregory Dubois, and it looks like his page hasn’t been updated in a while. No clue where he is now, but he has some great work on his page. Kurt Kobain, Audrey Hepburn, Stephen King, James Dean & more. All of them look great.

Today’s art of the day is an oil painting by Matt S. Bennett, an artist out of Jacksonville, Florida.

The painting is oil on canvas, and is a huge 36″ x 48″. I have seen a few pictures of this painting and it doesn’t show here but the black area has quite a lot of texture in it. That’s the one drawback of viewing paintings in photos and especially the internet, is that you loose all these subtle details. I love the overall feel to this painting, it has that Caravaggio look to it. Like the scene you are witnessing is being revealed to you through the murky black of the background. This also has to be one of the cooler likenesses of Edgar Allen Poe I have seen in a while.

I was visiting Varnish Art Gallery in San Francisco, and was able to see this piece in person. So I thought I would feature it as it’s an amazing painting and is the first time I am able to talk about a piece I saw up close for “Art of the Day”.

First of all the painting is huge, 35″ x 58″. And although the image doesn’t show it very well the colors make this piece really stand out. I noticed it from the bottom floor, it basically slapped me the face. It’s oil on wood and looks amazing. The wings have this great transparent quality to them. The frame really finishes this piece off so well. I love it when people use frames that don’t look like they were just picked up at the art store. It just adds a nice touch to it all. Michael Hussar uses custom frames, as does Sarah Bereza.

Today’s piece is from the amazing David Macdowell. He told me he was going to work on a piece inspired by Molly Ringwald, well of course he made one that was far cooler than I had imagined.

It’s acrylic on canvas and is a hefty 20″ x24″. I would love it if David taught classes somewhere on how to paint. I would totally go. Or maybe even just some youtube videos (hint-hint) showing a bit of the process. Well for now we can all just enjoy ogling his paintings, and hope he starts coming out with some prints.

Today’s piece is from Natasha Newton, an artist out of the UK that I was just recently re-introduced to. I’ve read that her work reminds people of Edward Gorey, and I can see that but I would also add that it reminds me of Amy Sol’s work, the color palette at least.

She uses a color palette that is nice and muted similar to Amy’s. The colors really help to create a great mood. It’s not melancholy, at least to me it isn’t. It reminds me a lot of the area close to where I live. In the winter when I’m out taking photos for work this is close to what I see all around me. I’m going to miss those days, but with paintings like Natasha’s I’ll be able to have something to remind me of it all. She also has prints available from her site.

Terri Woodward is an artist out of California, where I’m at by the way. She has had shows at the Hive Gallery, Art Whino, Carmichael Gallery and others. Her figures have these great big eyes, similar to what you might see in the work of Sas Christian but Terri definitely has her own style of painting. For instance the eyes in this piece really look like some sketchy zombie eyes, the kind of eyes that were always present in the best thriller movies. She can also paint perfect Bees, my favorite insect. Maybe one day she’ll paint a bumblebee?

If you want to see more of Terri’s work head on over to her site, you can also get some prints and even originals through the store area of her site.

Today’s piece is from an artist I met when I first started the site, and still keep in contact with. I’m surprised that I haven’t shown her art yet.

Not only does she make a variety of work, paintings, drawings & gig posters but she also has a sale ever Monday where you can score some of her work for less than the cost of fast food. You can’t beat that. I like the Victorian feel that her work has, which isn’t Victorian at all but pre-Tudor all the way up till the Georgian era.

You can see more of her work on her homepage, and follow her blog to score some of those Monday art deals.

I’m always talking about messy, energetic art, well this one satisfies all of that quite well. This crazy piece of art is from Kristina Svartz Rydmark an artist out of Sweden.

For this painting she used aquarelle, ink and acrylic. I think I also seem some bleach in there, the lighter color drips have that quality of what bleach looks like when it hits watercolors. I really dig this piece, I love how controlled the face is and those piercing eyes looking at you through all that chaos.

Kristina has a great style, and she knows when to get crazy with the paint and when to calm down.

Anyway, if you want to see more of her work head on over to her site:

I have had this artist in my list to share for a bit now, about time I share the work right?

This piece is from Walker-Ballantyne-Hill, an illustrator out of Canada with a great style. I like how you can see the wood grain through some of the paint, although I do wish the grain was more extravagant. I think a more intricate grain could add that final punch. She uses a wide variety of tools on each of her works: gauche, ball point pens, tempera and markers. With her style of drawing she is sure to fit right in with the likes of Joshua Taylor and maybe even Zoso.

Todays piece is from an illustrator that was born in Kiev, Ukraine and is now living in the midwest. Tanya Pshenychny a great style of drawing and really knows how to control watercolor. She really builds up the watercolor to come up with these dynamic images that I don’t always see when someone works with watercolors.

Along with illustration she also makes these great hand-bound sketchbooks. It’s always good as an artists to have loads of sketchbooks around and ready to be filled. I also like to have some really high quality ones, they often cost more but these are the ones you want to fill with your top notch work. Or take one with you on a vacation. Head on over to check out her site and maybe pick up one of her cool Skullfly sketchbooks.
