Weekly Art Search #5

June 17, 2007

I haven’t done one of these searches for a while, but I found enough cool work this weekend to put together another one. I was inspired by the the Weta Ray Guns that will be coming out in September.

So I went looking for other metal based sculptures. I love sci-fi looking stuff, add that the rusted metal and it makes for great collectibles.

The Raku Ray Guns look very cool, are one of a kind and much cheaper than the Weta ones.

Lockwasher Design not only makes ray guns, but also Robot, rocket and other sculptures. Most from found objects.

Aside from robots & ray guns, I found these amazing lamps by Frank Buchwald, I would love to have one these babies.

The work of Christopher Conte is also quite exciting. (Image above) He uses resin, bronze and various metals. I think his work would look great in a show with the work of Kris Kuksi.

Today’s piece come from a Laguna Beach artist named Orion Fisher. He has an amazing gallery, this is just one of the first pieces that caught my eye.

The dripping paint looks like it really is hanging off his nose, very convincing. Also a very cool way to incorporate the paint into the portrait as opposed to just having a normal portrait. I think it would kind of cool for a small run of works like this, just a small amount so that they don’t get old, regardless this is a fantastic piece.

Today’s piece comes from Joseph Larkin out of Columbus, OH.

If you head over to his homepage, you’ll see that he uses anything from acrylic, oil, mixed media, charcoal and ink. He has a huge gallery, filed with all sorts of imagery both dark and surreal. The piece above is one of his latest and caught my eye quickly, I love pencil work and this one is wonderful. Great figure drawing abilities, and the chimaera is great, very trippy. If you look close enough to the Chimaera, you’ll see why a big Naoto Hattori fan like myself would like this piece.

Make sure you check out his homepage and profile.

Todays piece of work comes from a children’s illustrator named Anne Julie, she is based out of France.

I love the striking contrast in this piece, and even though its all digital it has a great organic feel to it. I can imagine this artist has a great understanding of collage work, and painting even.

Have a look at her gallery for a huge amount of impressive work. I’m sure you’ll see her work at a bookstore soon.

Todays piece is by Matthew Bailey (relaxeder) and is entitled “Necrosis”. The piece is oil on canvas (with gauze and thread).

The main thing about this painting is the textures, wonderful when you look at the piece full view. A nice minimal splash of color with that rusty looking gauze ripping right through the middle of the painting. Looks to be some surgical equipment going on there, some visual elements leading to the idea of necrosis. It’s nice to see a piece that has so much texture also have a theme to it, something that is waiting for you to look into it and find out what is going on. I see way too many painting deal just with texture and no real message to it.

Today’s piece comes from an artist out of Philadelphia, Sean Metcalf. He is currently going to school for illustration is making quite big noise there as well. One look at his art and you can see that it’s quite dynamic.

I first got hooked on his work when I saw the inlfuence of artists like Ralph Steadman and Joan MirĂ³. Take a look at Sean’s gallery and you”ll see that while being influenced, he has quite a loud voice of his own.

Today’s piece comes from a UK artist, Matt Robinson. It’s 40×50cm on box canvas, and is acrylic paint and markers.

I love the colors, I think the orange in this one is used very well. If you look at the larger version, you can see that the markers were used for that mad crazy chest hair.

This particular piece will be in the Intoxicated Demons show in Berlin, opening June 29th ‘07.

This piece is by an artist known as LilyKane. It’s a digital piece, but quite frankly could pass for traditional pencil on paper. It looks great.

What caught my eye the most, was the skills this artist has in figure drawing. The proportions are great, and the contrast of the image is perfect. I dig the “tea-like” stains in the background.

Head over to her profile and homepage to see more amazing work.

Todays artwork of the day has two paintings in it (dyptich). The artists name is Jason Martin, he paints, illustrates, web design, you name it.

This piece really caught my eye, each one is acrylic on canvas 20×30″. I love the colors of both, and the backgrounds are really cool, especially the 1st one. The dark green stains are great, and do a good job of filling in for trees and what not.

Have a look at his website for his other work.

Sorry for the lull this weekend, I had to catch up with work. Anyway, this artwork of the day is by an artist named Grzegorz Krysinski. It’s a conceptual piece, and looks amazing. When digital art is done well, it can look as exciting as traditional art. I love how the artist here leaves the large digital brush strokes visible, it makes it great candy for the eye.
