Laura Lucía Ferrer Zamudio (also known as Kikyz 1313) is an artist working out of Queretaro, Mexico. In 2010 she received her BFA from the University of Queretaro and has since been in a few solo and group exhibitions. Her drawings are created with graphite, ink, and sometimes a wash of color from maybe watercolors or watered down acrylics. The content deals mainly with the idea of humanity and death, and through Laura’s impressive drawing skills and use of texture as seen with the cross-hatching, each image is not only delicate but surreal. If your like me and plan on keeping an eye on the work of the very talented Laura Lucía Ferrer Zamudio, make sure you check out her homepage which also has links to her tumblr and other social profiles. 1313.mx

Each of the paintings below I imagine is no larger than 8″ x 8″, acrylic on wood panel. I love the idea that Edith created some smaller paintings, something that fans of smaller art can collect. I also like how the color palette is very congruous, and the position of each the figures also helps to make this a very strong series. I hope we see more tiny series like this from Edith in the future. It’s always good to take a break and remember to enjoy all of the little amazing things that happen when you really pay attention. However, It’s been hard to ignore some of the events surrounding the Occupy Wall Street movement, with cops macing protesters, more people joining support, and artists jumping in and sharing their creativity for the 99%. Artists working in a variety of mediums have been creating posters that reiterate the groups message. Of course I have seen many sites that are offering shirts and posters, with no mention that your money will go to anything other than the pockets of those that sell the items but that always happens. One site worth checking out, Occupyprint.org has a good amount of OWS posters, each one is downloadable in pdf format for free, so you can help spread the images around.
Most recently Shepard Fairey has released a new image, in the same style as the Obama “Hope” Poster, which shows a redesigned figure wearing a hoodie, and a Guy Fawkes mask (representative of Anonymous and OWS). Below you can see the first version of the poster, and the updated version after Fairey received a response from an Occupy organizer.

The first poster was criticized as it came off “pro-Obama” with the use of the badge seen in the first poster, now with the 99% shown in the center, and most visible the callout at the bottom stating “Mr. President We HOPE You’re on Our Side”. In the response the Orgaziner clearly states OWS does want to associate with any major figure, especially Obama who has “raised more money from Wall Street than any other candidate in history”. The organizer goes to breakdown each one of the choices Fairey made in the creation of this new poster. In the end the poster was later changed with the full response that prompted it. Now the image states “We Are the HOPE”. Of course the colors will always associate the image with the original design, but I am curious to know how you feel about it. Does the design “reclaim” the original “Hope” poster and give it new power? What do you feel about the initial Occupy design, and the changes that were made?

Read the full response by OWS to Shepard Fairey here @ OBEY
The paintings have a foreboding quality to them, and even though their may be multiple characters in one piece, there is this sense of isolation to them.

The most striking thing to me about Jose’s work, is the style in which he paints as well as the eyes and visage of the characters. These figures are meant to be everyman, and the choppy style of paintings the faces is meant to symbolize that the figures are not fully formed yet. While the paintings already have this unnerving feel about them, the eyes drive this feeling to the very core of the viewer. The gaze is piercing, and in a way looks as though the figures in some of these works are scrutinizing the viewers as opposed to the other way around. Take a look at the preview images below, and then make sure to head over to Jose’s website to see more and keep up with new work and events.

If you look at the paintings from these shows (below), you can see that some of the characters and elements made their way into the Family Guy segment.

I love the idea that these cartoons (Family Guy, Simpsons, etc) are integrating the art and direction of the artists we spend so much time watching, such as The Simpsons, Banksy directed intro that aired a year ago. Cartoons are still such an amazing medium. One that allows for reality to pushed any which way the animator, writers, and director so choose. Take a look at the video sequence after the jump.

Chris Mars has updated his website with some new artwork, as well as news of upcoming shows and events. After checking out the new work, the next thing you need to do is go to the film/documentary section. There are two videos here showing time-lapse videos of Chris painting. It gives a great insight into how he works; such as the idea that it looks as though he is painting whatever comes to his head with no under-painting or drawing to speak of. I love how effortless the painting process looks in these videos, when the work itself is so intense. It just goes to show how talented he really is. Int he coming months Chris will have some art in some museums, such as Halle St. Pierre Sept 12, 2011 – March 4, 2012, Mesa Contemporary Arts Sept 9 – Sept 30, 2011, and again at Mesa from Sept 9th to Dec 4th, and finally the Museum of Fine Arts in Florida for a show entitled “Cute & Creepy” curated by Carrie Anne Baade opening October 7th.
August 20th was the birthday of legendary horror author, H.P. Lovecraft. I planned on making a post filled with Lovecraft inspired works, but decided instead to show just one work of art. “Cthulhu Rising” by Dan Harding is the perfect painting to show on this occasion. While a portrait of Lovecraft would have been fitting, this painting featuring his iconic character Cthulhu, perfectly embodies the feel and energy Lovecraft’s stories have held for so long. I could easily imagine this painting being the cover of a book. The original work was a commission, 12″ x 16″ oil on masonite. However, if you really like this image head on over to Dan’s online shop for a 11″ x 14″ print on textured linen paper for only $20. Dan Harding Shop

Dan May has just released a new commission painting he was working on, that I had to share here. Dan’s work has always been mystical, colorful, and always growing forward with each new painting becoming more intense. This new painting steps this up a notch in a big way. Coming in at 60″ x 30″, “Where Time Beckons the Wicked” is a window into Dan’s world that gives a clearer view than ever before. The colors have that amazing muted feel his most recent works have, and not only does this painting contain a human figure, but some animals, and some of the unique creatures Dan is so well known for. It’s a stunning image to view on a monitor, I can only imagine how impressive it is in person. I know this painting took ages to create, but I do hope we see some more large scale works such as this from Dan in the future. Click the image for a larger version. Dan May Flickr
