Inspirations: “Victoria, Demon Hunter” by Roberto Parada

I’ve thought about starting a new section of the site for a while now, dedicated to the inspiration artists use for certain works as well as artwork inspired by other works of art. This section will not be used to tag the works as plagiarism, sites like You Thought We Wouldn’t Notice are better for that. This is about homages, inspiration and how ideas can give birth to new ideas and images that were simply worth telling again.

For the first installment I wanted to share an amazing painting by Roberto Parada, an illustrator working out of New York. The painting, “Victoria, Demon Hunter” was created as the cover for a book entitled “Queen Victoria, Demon Hunter” by Richard Aquan. The painting looks amazing, but what caught my eye as a long time zombie fan, was the inspiration used for some of the zombie heads. I can recognize a few faces from the “Night of the Living Dead” 1990 Remake and Dario Argento’s “Demons”. I like the idea that popular zombies were used in this cover, it’s sure to make any zombie fan take a closer look at the cover.

Artists Profiles: Andrew Wodzianski

An artist working out of Washington DC, Andrew Wodzianski graduated with a Masters from the Maryland Institute College of Art. His work has been published the Washington Post and shown at galleries such as Art Whino, Fraser Gallery and more. He works in a variety of mediums; inks, gouache, marker, acrylic and oils. His mixed media works have a more graphic feel to them, while his oil paintings tend to be more classical in style. It is his paintings that caught my eye from the start. You’ll first notice looking in his gallery that he has quite a few series of works. From his muted and washed out “House” series to the “Sequences” and “Coulrophobia” (fear of clowns) series. I really enjoyed the “Lucha Libre! / Persephone & Other Paintings” section as well as his Earlier work which is the most classical out of the bunch. The painting that stands out the most to me is “Paul” (shown), which was inspired by DH Lawrence’s “Rocking Horse Winner” and Caravaggio’s “Conversion on the way to Damascus”. It’s a great idea and painted beautifully.

Artist Profiles: Fabio Viale

Fabio Viale is an Italian artist that does the most amazing things with marble. I don’t often share sculptural work, but the moment I saw the sculptures of Viale I had to post. He has made some really amazing things out of marble such as a working boat, popcorn, toilet paper roll and the busts shown below. The “Souvenir Gioconda” and “Skull” are both out of marble but look just as though they were made out of styrofoam, it’s mindblowing.

Eyewriter provides a creative outlet for paralyzed artists

It’s technological advances like this that make me excited to see what the future of art will be like. Tony Quan aka Tempt is a graffiti artist, and now due to being paralyzed from Lou Gehrig’s disease he can no longer create art the way he used to. This is where eyewriter comes in. With a computer, the open source software and and eye tracking system people like Tony can get back to create art again.

This is such a great idea. It shows how important art is, not only for the people who create it, but for all of us. Take a look at the video, get your spirits lifted and then make sure you head over to eyewriters website and have a look around. I can’t wait to see where this technology goes.
