Coming this Saturday, September 25th, to the Corey Helford Gallery is a show featuring new works by Korin Faught, Krista Huot, and Mia. Three very exciting artists each with a unique style, this should be a great show. Mia recently added some of the drawings that she will be showing over at her blog. The drawings range from 6.5″ x 6.5″ up to 29.25” x 22”. I like how you can see her drawing style tighten and loosen up in different areas of the drawings, but either way she has a very elegant style. Make sure to check out Mia’s blog to see more works, keep up to date with shows, and even see some sketches.
“Creeping Beauty” @ Hyaena Gallery
Opening this Saturday, September 18th at the Hyaena Gallery in Los Angeles is a duo show featuring new works and collaborations by Rick ‘Dienzo’ Blanco and Eric “Toxic Toons” Pigors. The reception starts at 8pm and goes until midnight. If your in the area, make sure you stop by. Dienzo sent over a few preview images of the works that will be in the show, take a look and then keep your eye fixed on the galleries site for the full show to be online.

“Wonders and Strange Girls” by Carles Gomila @ Christopher Hill Gallery
Opening this Saturday, September 18th at the Christopher Hill Gallery in St. Helena, CA, is the latest solo show of Carles Gomila. Entitled “Wonders and Strange Girls”, this new exhibition features around 18 new paintings by this mixed media mastermind. In order to create these stunning works, Carles using oils, acrylics, copper and gold leaf on different types of canvas. He often uses alkyd and egg tempera; i’m surprised he didn’t use either of those for these paintings. No matter what medium he chooses to us, Carles has a very unique style. Wonders and Strange Girls Preview
“An Unforeseen Homecoming” by Nathan Ota @ La luz de Jesus
This Friday, September 3rd at the La Luz De Jesus Gallery is the latest solo show from Nathan Ota. The reception is from 8-11pm but if you get there an hour earlier, there will be a print release. There are over 20 new paintings, and even some pencil works. Strangeco has also started a pre-order for a new vinyl toy by Ota, entitled “Midnight Crooner” that can be found here: Strangco Pre-order. Eklektikos by Kent Williams @ Evoke Contemporary
Opening this Thursday, September 2nd is the latest solo show by Kent Williams. Entitled “Eklektikos”, this new exhibition will open at Evoke Contemporary in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The reception is from 6-8pm, so if your around the area make sure to get there early to really check out the paintings. The show features a great blend of large scale works, and some studies with mixed media on paper. The style Williams has in drawing he figure shines through in not only his studies, but the final oil paintings as well. I love the energetic, and slightly messy way that the paint is applied. Preview: David Choong Lee “Acquiring Signal” @ Lebasse Projects
Opening this Saturday, August 14th is the latest solo show of David Choong Lee, entitled “Acquiring Signal”. This will be Lee’s second largest installation based show, and will completely encompass the gallery walls with 500+ pieces. This combination of paintings and sculptures are inspired by the “street people and the cities they inhabit”. This is going to be an very impressive show, one of the shots from the galleries blog give an idea of how massive this installation will be.

“New Breed II” @ Last Rites Gallery
This Saturday, August 7th is the next installment of the New Breed series. “New Breed II” will feature work by John Cebollero, Patrick Deignan, Leslie Ditto, Mark Elliot, Steve Ellis, Angie Mason, Celeste Rapone, Natalie Shau, and Jasmine Worth. Angie Mason has been around for quite a while now, so I’m sure how her work fits the theme. Regardless, the work looks amazing and I really like what Shau, Ditto, and Cebollero came up with. Preview: Tyson McAdoo “Black Smoke White Lies” @ Rivet Art
Opening this August 7th at Rivet Art is a new solo show entitled “Black Smoke White Lies” by pinup artist Tyson McAdoo. As stated by Gayla Partridge; “His ladies, teetering on impossibly high heels, seem as likely to screw you, as shoot you or cook you some bacon in nothing but an apron.” The show features some framed giclee prints that are limited to 1, and some sketches and studies in a variety of mediums. All of the work looks amazing, I like being able to see the drawings that goes into making some of his finished works. I hope adding these types of works to his shows becomes a habit.

“The Black Plague Art Show” @ Congregation Gallery
Opening tonight, July 24th at the Congregation Gallery in Hollywood, CA is a group show entitled “The Black Plague Art Show”. Curated by Cam Rackam, this show has a very impressive lineup with new works from: Jason Soles, Buddy Nestor, Cam Rackam, Chris Peters, Christopher Conte, Dan Harding, Ian Ward, Sean Chappell, Terry Wolfinger, Vincent Castiglia, Lacey Bryant, Karl Persson, Nikko Hurtado, Larkin, and many more. Of course we all know the Black Plague to be one of the deadliest pandemics in human history, but one of the elements you will see in many of these works is the outfits the plague doctors would wear. It consisted of a wide brimmed hat (a signifier of being a doctor), a long black overcoat (to minimize exposure), a cane for examining and ushering people around, and most notable the bird’s beak shaped mask. This mask worked similar to a gas mask, as impure air was thought to spread the disease. The mask had red eyepieces, thought to block the doctor from evil, and the beak would be filled with herbs or spices that would reduce the smell and again block impure air.
It’s an outstanding show, and had me surprised quite a few times. Dan Harding’s new piece “La Bella Morte Nera” (or The Beautiful Back Death), is so amazing, his work just keeps getting better. I also liked Jason Soles “Bell Jar Baby” and various masks. Lacey Bryant also has some great, illustrative pieces that really take the idea of the Black Plague as inspiration. “A Surprise for Mum” has the rats that helped spread the plague, and “Pocketful of Posies” is pretty creepy as well. Jason D’Aquino & Lead Poisoning @ Last Rites Gallery
This past Saturday, July 10th, two amazing shows opened at the Last Rites Gallery in New York. First a solo show of new works by Jason D’Aquino, and then a drawing group show called “Lead Poisoning”. Just a few of the artists that participated in the group show are: Esao Andrews, Carrie Anne Baade, Glenn Barr, Dave MacDowell, Scott G Brooks, Daniel Martin Diaz, Ron English, Chris Mars, Chet Zar, David Stoupakis, Eric White, Tara McPherson, and many more.
Jason D’Aquino’s show was a perfect blend of his smaller matchbook pieces, and some larger works done on various types of antiqued paper. There is also two prints available: “Plague” which is 8″ x 18″ limited to 50, and “Antique Flash Poster” at 18″ x 24″ for $40. Jason has such an amazing style. The way he draws, his characters, and the found paper that he uses really helps to create a unique and nostalgic feel. I especially like the piece “Don Post (Masks)” (shown), it reminds me of being a kid and wanting to collect every mask Don Post ever created.

Preview: Crazy 4 Cult 4
The group show Crazy 4 Cult is now back again for the fourth installment. The full title “Crazy 4 Cult 4: The Case of the Redundant Number”, will feature work inspired by cult movies from a wide range of amazing artists. Just a few of those participating are: Allison Sommers, Anne-Julie Aubrey, Apricot Mantle, Casey Weldon, Chet Zar, Chris Murray, Dan May, Dave MacDowell, Ewelina Ferruso, Gene Guynn, Joe Scarano, Ken Garduno, Ken Keirns, N.C. Winter, Rich Pellegrino, Scott Campbell, Stella Im Hultberg, Tom Haubrick, and many more. Some are veterans of the group show, and many are new. The past three shows seemed to have been dominated by just a handful of movies, Donnie Darko, The Big Lebowski, Edward Scissorhands, and Willy Wonka. There are so many amazing cult movies, I do hope some of them are given the same treatment some of the repeat titles have. Brent Nolasco, Jeremy Nichols, & Revise CMW @ Rivet
Opening this Saturday, July 3rd at Rivet Art is a group show featuring work by Brent Nolasco, Jeremy Nichols, & Revise CMW. All three artists have a very abstract, and energetic feel to their work and compliment each other very well. Revise CMW also has a limited edition screen print, a collaboration with Joey Potts (last below).
