On September 2nd, Gallery 1988 in Melrose opened a new themed group show, this one with work inspired by the Garbage Pail Kids. I remember when the collectors cards first came out in 1985, and kids went insane for them. The biggest draw for me was the art, and it’s the one thing that made the concept of this show exciting. There is a huge amount of work available in a variety of mediums, as well as limited edition prints. It was great to see what each of these artists would bring to show; would they make a painting styled like the classic cards, or opt to make something new and unique in design. There is a good mixture of both, and I am happy to see works styled like the cards and some that are not. It helps to break up what could have become too much. There is some amazing work in this show, seen below are some paintings by Allison Reimold, Dave MacDowell, N.C. Winters, and some killer prints available from Rhys Cooper. “The Road to Shermer: A Tribute to John Hughes” @ Gallery 1988
Gallery 1988 in Venice opened a new group show this past Friday, February 11th. “The Road to Shermer: A Tribute to John Hughes” features original art and prints from an impressive list of artists, and will be run until March 4th. All of your favorite John Hughes movies have been reinterpreted by such artists as Aaron Jasinski, Audrey Pongracz, Augie Pagan, Ben Walker, Brandon Sopinsky, Chris Tezber, Dave MacDowell, Israel Sanchez, Jesse Riggle, Kelly Vivanco, Kevin Tong, Munk One, N.C. Winters, Nicole Guice, Rich Pellegrino, and many more. I’m not the biggest fan of theme shows like this, but this is a good one. There is so much material to work from when it comes to Hughes’ movies, and these artists did a killer job. I really like what Aaron Jasinski, Rich Pellegrino, N.C. Winters, and of course Dave MacDowell who has been using Hughes and inspiration for years. The prints also look great, Derek Deal created an amazing Planes, Trains, and Automobiles print.
“Idiot Box” @ Gallery 1988 LA
The latest cult themed group show, “Idiot Box” opens at the Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles tonight. This new show is all about the television, so you will see work about shows that we grew up with as well as shows that are melting our brains right now.
The show looks petty good, there seems to be a large amount of artists that focused on ALF and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I was happy to see some shows such as “Twilight Zone” as done by Ken Garduno, Scott Campbell did a great mashup of “Greatest American Hero” and the “A-Team”. Marcus Shaefer (shown) did one of the creepiest “Ren & Stimpy” themed works I have seen so far.
Take a look at some of my favorites, and then head on over to check out the whole show. There is a quite a bit of prints available from the works, and I know that during he reception Gelaskins will be giving away skins of Alex Pardee’s painting as well as all sorts of goodies.
Under the Influence: Beastie Boys show now online
The Beastie Boys theme art show “Under the Influence” opens at the Gallery 1988 in LA tonight. The show features a whole mess of artists creating art inspired by the band. The show is now online to view, or order art if you wish. Along with original art there is also a good amount of limited edition prints made for the show.
There are some really great artists in the show such as: Ken Garduno, Tom Haubrick, Matt Dangler, Aaron Jasinksi, Andrew Hem, Michael Page, Alex Pardee and the three shown below, Dave Macdowell, Casey Weldon and Chris Murray. Dave’s painting is of course amazing as usual, the colors and textures in Chris’s and Casey’s Biz Markie with the Ted Nugent shirt and energy beam shooting mouth is too much.

Project 57 auction now at Distinction Gallery
The reception for the Project 57 show, a benefit for Charles Leslie Walker will be on August 9th from 6-11pm. All of the works in the show are 5″ x 7″, and the artists can donate a portion or all of the proceeds to the LBD Association.
The auction is now underway and will end the night of the reception. There are some really killer works in the show, some of which might even go for a pretty cheap price. Some of the artists in the show are Audrey Kawasaki, Michael Page, Chris Ryniak, Ekundayo, Ahren Hertel, Michael Brown, Richard Salcido and many others.

Shows this weekend: Amanda Visell & “Everyone in Together”
Here is the rundown of the shows this weekend:
The big one in San Francisco this weekend is the huge group show ‘Everyone in Together” at the Gallery 1988 SF location. The show features work by Aaron Jasinski, Cherri Wood, Erik Abel, Jonathan Bergeron, Krista Huot, Mike Shine, Noferin, Allison Torneros, Chrystal Chan, Andy Kehoe, Andrew Bell, Chris Murray, Nate Frizzell, Megan Kimber, El Maz, Chet Zar, Yoskay Yamamoto as well as two artists previously shown on the Creep Machine: Skaffa and Anne-Julie Aubrey. This Saturday at the M Modern Gallery is “Tic Toc Apocalypse”, the solo show of Amanda Vissell.
