Mark Batty Publisher has just releases a new art book, “EdgyCute: From Neo-Pop to Low Brow and Back Again”. The book is compiled by Orbit Gallery owner Harry Saylor along with Carolyn Frisch. The book features work from 47 artists such as, Ana Bagayan, Gary Baseman, Becca, Nicoletta Ceccoli, Chris Crites. Greg Gossell, Ryan Heshka, Angelique Houtkamp, Jeremiah Ketner, Travis Lampe, Angie Mason, Elizabeth McGrath, Brandi Milne, Mitch O’Connell, Kathie Olivas, Brandt Peters, Lisa Petrucci, Joe Scarano, Shag, Gary Taxali, Brian Taylor, Chris Uminga, Brian Viveros, Keith Weesner and more.
The book is 10″ x 12″, casebound with 176 pages for $45.

This July 11th at the Copro Gallery will be “Monster”, a group show curated by Travis Louie and features the work of over 50 artists. I’m a big fan of the work of Mr Louie, and was raised on monster artwork, so this show is right up my alley. Some of the artists that will be at this show are Ron English, Femke Hiemstra, Jessica Joslin, Audrey Kawasaki, Tessar Lo, Martin Wittfooth, Chet Zar, Amanda Visell, Ana Bagayan, Annie Owens, Attaboy, Brandt Peters, Brian Despain, Brom, Chris Ryniak, Dan Quintana, Ekundayo, Dave Chung, Dave DeVries, Davey Wong, Deseo, Dice Tsutsumi, Francesco LoCastro, Fred Harper, Heidi Taillefer, Isabel Samaras, James Zar, Jason D’Aquino, Amy Botello, Kris Kuksi, Kris Lewis, Lola, Mari Inukai, Mark Texiera, Miles Teves, Molly Crabapple, Nouar, Xiaoqing Ding and many more. I like how Travis brought up that some of the art we see is short on conception and lacks creativity. My favorite bit is:

A gallery owner (I won’t say who) tried to tell me how great someone’s brushwork was, and he really had no clue about what constitutes “good brushwork.” Folks, there is a significant difference between having a strong style that exaggerates anatomy, and exaggeration because of a lack of anatomical knowledge. I’m not saying I’d like to see all things painted realistically or naturalistically, but I would prefer that the artists know how to draw something, at least. I’ve seen so many artists whose drawing was so bad I can’t believe they got shows.

Not only am I crazy about Art History, but I am also quite big on anatomy and classical ways of painting/drawing. I hope to see more of these disciplines as well. Anway, make sure you head on over to Erratic Phenomena to read the interview and check out the gallery for the full preview of works.

Friday:
Grass Hut Corp will be opening “The Squirrels Made Me Do It”, a group show featuring work by Anna Chambers, Joe Ledbetter, Michelle Valigura & Amanda Visell.

T&P Fine Arts is opening the group show “The Kids Are Alright”. This show is curated by Beau Basse and will feature work by Nimit Malavia, Yuta Onoda, Danni Shinya Luo, Jeremy Lynch, Eric Davison and many more.

Ad Hoc Art will be hosting new works from Ekundayo and Joshua Clay in the main room, and TheDirtyFabulous in the project room.

Saturday:
Rivet Art will be showing new works from Annie Owens ans Laurie Lipton.

Gallery 1988 SF will open a dual show of Dan McCarthy and Daniel Danger. There will be some prints released at the reception.

Copro Gallery will have three killer shows opening up. Brandt Peters solo show at the Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles is now online to view. Of course the work is all amazing, but what I like the most os the variety he has there. So not only is there paintings and drawings, but a whole mess of sculptures and paintings on found objects. There is also four prints available from the show, shown is “Faithful” a collaboration piece with Kathie Olivas. The gallery is only selling 10 of the edition of 20 on each so I imagine the rest will be at Circus Posterus soon.

So much of the work in this is striking, that Eric Fortune “A Wish for the Mourning” is beautiful.

After a long week of reading what seems like nothing but bad news, the weekend is finally here, and with it a whole host of killer shows.

Friday:
“Fallen” will open at the Varnish Art Gallery in San Francisco. This show will feature work by Carlos Huante and Jose Ismael Fernandez. It’s not often that I get to talk about sculpture, ad I am a huge fan of Fernandez. His sculptures are so amazing, I am particularly fond of “Jane”, “Struggle” and “Fallen”. “Red Forest”, a show featuring work by Ekundayo and KMNDZ will have its reception at the Thinkspace Gallery. You will also be able to see work by Jeaneen Carlino and Michael Alvarez in the Project Room.

Finally at the Shooting Gallery in San Francisco, will be a group show featuring the work of Kris Kuksi, Travis Louie and Mercedes Helnwein. This is going to be a great show. I am excited to see the work if Kris Kuksi and Mercedes in person. I have seen Travis Louie’s work once before, and am very happy to be able to do so again, it looks so amazing in person. I’ll be at the show snapping pictures.

It looks like there are some new prints available over at the Circus Posterus site.

Brandt Peters has two new prints, “Yoki” from the Yokai in your Eye Show and “The Sitting Room” from a recent show at Gallery 1988. Yoki is limited to 25, and Sitting Room is limited to only 20. Sas Christian has a new print entitled “Spun”. Its a giclee on canvas, 8″ x 10″ and is limited to 30. And two new prints that were collaboration works by Brandt Peters and Kathie Olivas, “Hysteria” and “No 8″. both prints are on canvas, as well as paper limited to 25 each.

There is also a small amount of these collab prints framed as well for just a little bit more. Hit them up on the site if your interested. Head on over and check out all the new editions. I’m really hooked on that “No 8″ (shown) print, it looks amazing.

“Strangely Mannered” opening on Friday at the Gallery 1988 in SF. The show features work by Travis Louie, Scott Scheidly, Joe Vaux & Brandt Peters. I was able to make it to the reception, it was a blast and was able to talk to Travis, Tanem Davidson (Newbrow Documentary) and Gene Guynn otherwise known as Rhino Barking Sparrow. “4 on the Floor” opened this Saturday at “The Gallery” in Atlanta. The show features work by David MacDowell, Brandi Read, Emma Mount & Jessica Elaine Blinkhorn. Also on Saturday, the new solo show of Shawn Barber opened up at the Billy Shire Fine Arts Gallery. The show is entitled “Tattooed Portraits: “Los Angeles”, and features some really killer works. There is a few watercolor works in the mix, and a massive painting of Kat Von D that is already sold. If you take a look, a few of the works are also available as prints.
