Preview: “Literal eyes” group show @ London Miles Gallery

Opening tonight, May 12th at the London Miles Gallery is a group exhibition with 30 artists creating art inspired by their favorite books. This type of group theme show has popped up a few times this past year, and as far as I’m concerned that’s a good thing. It could be another group show based on movies, or 80′s nostalgia. Book always win, and this list of artists show that. Tom Bagshaw, Linnea Strid, Nom Kinnear King, Sergio Mora, Tahnee Lonsdale, Zach Cohen, Camilla D’Errico, Craww, and Carles Gomila are just a few of the artists that created something for this show. Keep your eye on the galleries page for the full show.

“Lyric” group show @ 323 East Gallery

323 Gallery recently opened a show curated by Glenn Barr that features art inspired by music. It seems like it has been quite a long time since a show like this has come around, hopefully this show and the “INLE” show curated by Craola will signal a new trend towards art and books, instead of movies and pop-culture mashups. Not that I don’t like those kinds of shows, but it would be nice for some more variety. “Lyric” opened on March 19th and will run until April 19th. Glenn Barr has assembled a greta list of artists such as: Jeff Soto, William Wray, Bask, Chris Recarrdi, Rick Morris, Gary Taxali, Chet Zar, Brandt Peters, Kathie Olivas, Yumiko Kayukawa, Camilla D’Errico, Brandi Milne, Lisa Petrucci, and more. After the preview images head on over and check out he full show.

“The Mad Potters Tea Party” @ Strychnin gallery

This past Friday, February 4th, Strychnin Gallery opened of the more unique shows I have seen in a while. “The Mad Potters Tea Party” features custom designed ceramics from over 100 international artists. Limited edition plates, teapots, vases, teacups and saucers created by artists such as Chris Mars, Ray Caesar, KRK Ryden, Caitlin Hackett, David Stein, Seymour, David Stoupakis, Camilla d’Errico, Kristen Ferrell, Bethany Marchman, Jason Jacenko, David Hochbaum, Saturno Buttò, Martina Secondo Russo, Ver Mar, Scott Holloway, Edith Lebeau, Brian Horton, and many more. I thought it was a great idea when some limited edition cups and saucers were released by UK’s This is Limited Edition, and most of these sets of long since sold out. The ceramics seen here at Strychnin are far more limited and unique. Chris Mars for example has created some round, plate style paintings before (featured), however I was really surprised to see how amazing his works looks on a Durham vase and Teapot. Make sure you check out this show after you look at the preview images.

Alternative Press Expo all this weekend

All weekend long, if you are in San Francisco you might want to stop over to the Concourse and check out the Alternative Press Expo. It will be filled with all sorts of indie comics, and there will of course be the original art and prints that many of these artists will no doubt have with them.

I love indie, self published comics, but it is really the art/prints that I am going to see. So I have put together a little list of some of the artists that you will be able to check out at the show. I am told it is not very big, nothing like SDCC, so finding some of these artists shouldn’t be too hard in case I wasn’t able to get the table number they are at.

- Food One, Dave Crosland & Scott Morse will be at #314, and then later that night at the Space Gallery on Polk for a live art with screen printing on an item you bring.
- Tom Haubs and Ken Garduno will be there, with some original works and a new zine.
- Hi Fructose will be there at #350-351, make sure you stop by to pick up some back issues.
- Lesley Reppeteaux & Daryll Peirce will be at table #119
- Alex Pardee will be there with ZeroFriends at #150. Bunnywith 2 will be sold, and a new 8″ x 10″ print that looks amazing.
- Ben Walker will be at table #446
- Camilla d’Errico will be at table #272, with some prints, keychains and books.
- David Choong Lee will be at #254-255
- IDW Publishing will be at booth #331-332, and I think Ben Templesmith will be signing.
- Jim Mahfood will be at table #314
- Jeremy Tinder will be at #349 with his new “Papercutter” book
- Tom Neely will be at #360-361 with some books

Along with the A.P.E there is also two shows opening that go along with the Expo.
At Varnish Art, the group show “Crom” opens. It’s all work inspired by the Conan movies from the artists that are there for APE. The show opens at 7pm and will have work from N8 Van Dyke, Jon Wayshak, Alex Pardee and many more. Check it out

Also, Panelists IV opens at Giant Robot SF at 6:30pm – 10pm. The show will feature work from such comic artists as: Allison Cole, Matt Furie, David Horvath, Mats!?, Tom Neely, Jeremy Tinder and many others. Check it out Here
