It’s that time again, and one of my favorite times of the year. It’s October and this means Halloween is just around the corner. This is the month you can spend your nights watching horror movies, which I do all year long anyway, as well as appreciate all of the horror and dark art that is created. This months feature has some outstanding art from some of the best artists out there: Sarah Joncas, Jay Doronio, Tom Bagshaw, Gary Pullin, Nikko Hurtado, Leilani Bustamante, Larkin, Jackie Gallagher, Dan Harding, Ryan Heshka, Jason Levesque, Ojimbo, R.S. Connett, Charlie Immer, Akira Beard, John Cebollero, Craig larotonda, Christopher Ulrich, and XNO. Click the image to go to the feature and have a great October!
“Necropolis” Dark Art Group Show @ Congregation Gallery
This past weekend was a good time for art fans as a handful of amazing shows opened up. One of which was “Necropolis”, a dark art group show that opened at the Congregation Gallery on Saturday. The show features work by Nikko Hurtado, Christopher Peters, Cam Rackam, Christopher Ulrich, Larkin, Dan Harding, Scott Holloway, Buddy Nestor, Jeremy Cross, Jason Soles, Aunia Kahn, Christopher Conte, Kolaboy, Chad Savage, the Creep, Jason Hernandez, Sean Chappell, Scarecrowoven, Liv Rainey-Smith, and many more. The show will be on view until roughly August 12th. I was very happy to see the work of Kolaboy, as I have been a fan of his since around the time this site started. Liv Rainey-Smith also made some amazing little block prints.

Christopher Ulrich “Halloween Studio Sale II” @ La Luz De Jesus Gallery
If you happen to be close to La luz de Jesus Gallery this Sunday, October 31st, you might want to check out Christopher Ulrich’s “Halloween Studio II”. Starting at 11am and going until 7pm, to give you some time to get ready for any Halloween parties, you can check out a huge amount of studies and finished paintings by the artist. Not only is this a great way to see the working process of Ulrich, via the many studies and sketches, but it’s kind of like a one day show featuring work from his “Illuminator” and “Demoneater” Series, “The Fourth Enochian Key”, “Pan’s Labyrinth” concept work, and paintings from various group shows he was in. Looking at all of this art is sure to get you even more excited for his upcoming solo show at La Luz de Jesus this December 7th, “The Reckoning”. As an art historian, the work of Ulrich is very exciting. So much of his work is filled with iconography, classic references, and it doesn’t hurt that his skill is Make sure you take a look at the sale online if you can’t make it in person, there are some really good deals such as “The first patron to buy two of the available Demoneater Doors will get one more for free, and will get their portrait painted into the centeral quattrain panel of the The Reckoning.” How cool is that?

The list of artists is quite impressive; Chet Zar, Christopher Ulrich, Edith Lebeau, Chris Mars, Carrie Anne Baade, Cate Rangel, Kris Kuksi, Brain Viveros, Molly Crabapple, Heather Watts, Laurie Lipton, David Stoupakis, Scott G Brooks, Daniel Martin Diaz, Danni Shinya Luo, and more. Christopher Ulrich “Illuminator: The Royal Wedding” @ La Luz de Jesus
Just this past Friday, August 6th at the La Luz de Jesus Gallery, an amazing show featuring new works by Christoper Ulrich opened up. Entitled “Illuminator: The Royal Wedding”, this solo exhibition, “Each piece in the series is designed to be its own portable temple marked and charged by the number 8″. The show features 16 paintings, 16 illustrated studies, 1 additional drawing, hidden notes, and 16 print editions. The prints are of the original 16 illustrated works and are each limited to a series of 12. Not only are the drawings expertly rendered showing Ulrich’s skills with graphite, but the oil paintings are even more impressive. Every inch of these works is filled with beautiful contrast, intense colors, and a perfect blend of inspiration from contemporary and classical works. I also liked the fact that each painting has its own custom made frame. Ornate frames chosen to fit with the paintings are great, but when the frame is designed specifically for the work or series of works, its just one more detail an artist can add to a show to really make a difference. It would be great to see these works in person, but for many the web will have to do. Make sure you check out the site, read the intro and digest every painting in this show.

The exhibition will run from June 26th to August 15th, so if you are around the Santa Ana area make sure to stop by. Just a few of the artists that will be participating in this show are: Peter Adamyan, Ron English, Robert Williams, Tara McPherson, Jeff McMillan, Ana Bagayan, Scott G Brooks, Luke Chueh, Dalek, Coop, Korin Faught, Mercedes Helnwein, Camille Rose Garcia, Alex Grey, Chris Mars, Scott Musgrove, Mark Ryden, Mike Shine, Christopher Ulrich, Eric White, Laurie Lipton and many more.
A majority of the work is pretty amazing. I’m not the biggest fan of Gary Baseman’s work but I really like the drawing he submitted. Eric White’s painting “Nope”, freaks me right out. There is also a good amount of prints we have seen before, but its nice that these artists submitted work to a good cause. Check out the preview images here, and then head on over and see the full show.
