This past Saturday, February 19th, the Copro Gallery opened a group show entitled “Lowbrow Life”. The show features new work by Leslie Ditto, Bob Doucette, Tin, Chrystal Chan, Keith Weesner, and P-Jay Fidler. It’s a good mix of artists with a variety of styles, there is bound to be some work that captures you. I have a hard time keeping up with what the current art scene is named, Lowbrow, Urban Contemporary, New Contemporary and so on, so I was happy to see the show named as such, when the artists in this show are not often linked to the word “Lowbrow”. Either way, it’s a great show. I really liked the new work by Keith Weesner and Chrystal Chan. Leslie Ditto also created a great series of works. She stated that her new works were inspired by “my love of vintage toys and my fascination of the heart and mind of the pure inventor.” The show runs until March 12th, and is now online to view.
Preview/Interview: Chet Zar – “Lilith” @ Copro Gallery
Coming this October to the Copro Gallery, Chet Zar will open his latest solo show “Lilith”. Ever since his last body of work at the “When Worlds Collide” exhibition, I have been very excited to see where this new direction in his work would take him. Most notably, his color palette had changed and a new painting that featured a female figure was shown. One of the recent criticisms I have heard is how many artists seem stuck in one mode of creation, seeming to churn out what looks like an endless supply of rehashed, slightly modified and worse yet predictable works of art. This is surely not the case with Chet Zar. Once you think you have his direction in your cross hairs he takes you into a completely new world. I was very lucky to be able to snag Chet for a mini interview, as well as post a few teaser images of what we will see this coming October 3rd.

“Empress of Death” print by Laurie Lipton
Copro Gallery has just released a new print from Laurie Lipton. The print is from a drawing she had in her show “Day of the Dead” that took place at Copro last October. You have the choice to buy the print unframed or framed. I like the idea that the print is pretty much the same size as the original, this way you get to see all the amazing detail that Laurie is able to get. This print is 17″ x 22″, signed and numbered in an edition of 30 for $100, $300 framed and matted archival with plexi.
