Just a few days before Halloween, on October 28th, Last Rites Gallery in New York opened the 4th annual group show The 13th Hour. The gallery is known for consistently showing the best in dark and surreal art, and the 13th Hour is a show that focuses on dark surrealist works from a broad variety of artists. This year the list of participating artists included: Shawn Barber, Matthew Bone, Paul Booth, Colin Christian, Sas Christian, Jason D’aquino, Tom Gabriel Fischer, HR Giger, Fred Harper, Naoto Hattori, Michael Hussar, Joka, Sarah Joncas, Aunia Kahn, Michael Mararian, Chris Mars, Annie Owens, Chris Peters, Anthony Pontius, Dan Quintana, David Stoupakis, and many more.
Aside from the outstanding dark art shows the gallery opens month after month, I love the shows that feature dark works of art from artists that rarely contribute to these types of shows, and art from those you might not have expected, such as Self Deceased XXXII by Tom Gabriel Fisher — otherwise known as Tom Warrior of Celtic Frost fame and most recently Triptykon. Eli Livingston also created a sculpture, one that seems to be able to light up from the inside. leslie Ditto also created some prints from her painting Witching Hour, that might still be available from her Facebook page. If your in the area make sure to stop by and see these works in person, you have until November 27th. Otherwise the show is now online to view.
Chet Zar, Dan Quintana, and Mark Garro @ Copro Gallery
Opening this Friday, October 15th, to the Copro Gallery in Santa Monica is a three person show featuring the work of Chet Zar, Dan Quintana, and Mark Garro. You might remember that Chet Zar recently had a solo show, Faces of Death, at Last Rites Gallery in July. Even after a show that opened close to this one, Chet brings 13 oil paintings to this latest solo show entitled The Left Hand Path. Dan Quintana opens Tinsel, and Mark Garro brings more than 9 new works to Apocalypservice. This is an outstanding show, all three artist are insanely talented. If you have the ability to see this show in person, make sure you do. It will be up until November 5th. Copro Gallery has also released a new limited edition print by Mark Garro to coincide the show. The print is a 30″ x 26″ giclee on wood, varnished, framed, and signed and numbered in an edition of 30.
“I Want My Music Video Art Show” @ Meltdown Gallery
Opening tonight, October 7th, at the Meltdown Gallery in Los Angeles is a massive group show, over 100 artists, all taking inspiration from music videos for the first “I Want My Music Video Art Show” curated by Chris Marrs Piliero and Dave MacDowell. Artists such as Sarah Joncas, Aaron Jasinksi, Aunia Kahn, Apricot Mantle, Chet Zar, Dan Harding, Dan Quintana, Edith Lebeau, Jason D’Aquino, John Cebollero, Kelly Vivano, Larkin, Kolaboy, Nate Van Dyke, N.C. Winters, Paul Chatem, Scott G Brooks, Scott C, and many more have created art based on their favorite music videos. Oh, and yours truly also has a piece of art in this show (thanks to Dave for talking me into it). The reception starts at 8 PM and I have heard that a good majority of the artists will be there, so if you stop by make sure to say hi to the artists that made this show a must see. The exhibition will run until October 20th, so if you can’t make the reception you have a little bit of time to see the show.
I am very honored to be a part of this show, there is so many amazing artists. To be honest I was a little too nervous in the beginning and thought about not entering. I will stay with my original goal of this site and not show my work here, however I am proud of the piece and hope the viewers of the show enjoy it. Preview: “Dystopia”, BeinArt Surreal Collective Show @ Copro Gallery
The past weekend some amazing shows opened up, and this coming weekend will be continuing this run of outstanding shows. On March 19th Copro Gallery will open the BeinArt Surreal Collective’s group show, “Dystopia”. Curated by Jon Beinart, this group show “will place the viewer in a fictional world where personal and societal fears can be explored. Preview: “INLE” group show curated by Greg ‘Craola’ Simkins @ Gallery 1988
Opening March 11th at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles is a group show curated by artist Greg ‘Craola’ Simkins. The show entitled “INLE”, will feature over 100 artists drawing inspiration from Richard Adams’ award winning book, WaterShip Down, and more specifically the Black Rabbit of Inlé. Preview: Playboy Redux II @ Copro Nason
Opening this Saturday, December 18th at Copro Nason is the second showing of the Playboy Redux Group Exhibition. The first showing was at Rotofugi Gallery, and from the looks of it there is a few new artists added to the show this time around. This second showing will feature work by Bob Doucette, Glenn Barr, Isabel Samaras, Frank Kozik, Tara McPherson, Brian Viveros, Scott Anderson, TIN, Vincent Cacciotti, Luke Chueh, Dan Quintana, Keith Weesner, William Wray, Gary Baseman, Leslie Ditto, Lisa Petrucci, Lang Leav, Brian Ewing, Andrew Schoultz, Shaunna Peterson, Jennybird Alcantra, Ken Keirns, Ain Cocke, Jeremiah Ketner, Travis Lampe, Anthony Ausgang, R. Dan Quintana and Pooch @ Last Rites Gallery
Just this passed weekend, the Last Rites Gallery in New York opened a dual show with new works from Dan Quintana and Pooch. Both artists have submitted new works for this show, and while Dan Quintana only has five paintings, unless more haven’t been added to the site, they are no less amazing than his work always is. Pooch has more than ten paintings, two of which are on guitars. Check out these preview images, and then over to the website for the full show.

This past February 12th, the “The Red Light Exhibit” curated by Genevive Zacconi and present by The Dirty Show along with Last Rites Gallery opened. The show had works by Paul Booth, Scott G Brooks, Shawn Barber, Vincent Castiglio, Colin Christian, Brian Viveros, Dan Quintana, Camilla d’Errico, David Stoupakis, Michael Hussar and many more. Genevive was nice enough to send over some photos of the reception night, some shots of the works and the festivities that also took place. “The Red Light Exhibit” @ The Dirty Show
Coming this Friday, February 12th from Genevive Zacconi and Last Rites Gallery is “The Red Light District” at the Dirty Show Detroit. Curated by Genevive, the show will feature erotic inspired works by Paul Booth, Scott G Brooks, Shawn Barber, Vincent Castiglio, Colin Christian, Brian Viveros, Dan Quintana, Camilla d’Errico, David Stoupakis, Michael Hussar and more. There is some really amazing work in this, and if you are lucky enough to be in the area, make sure to make it for the reception night. Dan Quintana & Brian Viveros prints @ Copro Nason
Coming this Friday. February 6th the Copro Gallery will open “Desensitized” with new works from Dan Quintana and Brian Viveros. There will even be a few collaborative paintings in the show as well. To go along with this new show the gallery just released five new prints, three from Viveros, one from Quintana and a lithograph of the collaborative piece named after the show for only $20 (shown first). The rest of the prints are giclee on paper, save for the “BULL-FIGHT-HER” by Viveros that is on board and comes framed. I really like the “300 Proof Dolly” print by Dan Quintana, it’s an amazing image (shown second).

Preview: Travis Louie’s “Monster” @ Copro Gallery
This July 11th at the Copro Gallery will be “Monster”, a group show curated by Travis Louie and features the work of over 50 artists. I’m a big fan of the work of Mr Louie, and was raised on monster artwork, so this show is right up my alley. Some of the artists that will be at this show are Ron English, Femke Hiemstra, Jessica Joslin, Audrey Kawasaki, Tessar Lo, Martin Wittfooth, Chet Zar, Amanda Visell, Ana Bagayan, Annie Owens, Attaboy, Brandt Peters, Brian Despain, Brom, Chris Ryniak, Dan Quintana, Ekundayo, Dave Chung, Dave DeVries, Davey Wong, Deseo, Dice Tsutsumi, Francesco LoCastro, Fred Harper, Heidi Taillefer, Isabel Samaras, James Zar, Jason D’Aquino, Amy Botello, Kris Kuksi, Kris Lewis, Lola, Mari Inukai, Mark Texiera, Miles Teves, Molly Crabapple, Nouar, Xiaoqing Ding and many more. I like how Travis brought up that some of the art we see is short on conception and lacks creativity. My favorite bit is:
A gallery owner (I won’t say who) tried to tell me how great someone’s brushwork was, and he really had no clue about what constitutes “good brushwork.” Folks, there is a significant difference between having a strong style that exaggerates anatomy, and exaggeration because of a lack of anatomical knowledge. I’m not saying I’d like to see all things painted realistically or naturalistically, but I would prefer that the artists know how to draw something, at least. I’ve seen so many artists whose drawing was so bad I can’t believe they got shows.
Not only am I crazy about Art History, but I am also quite big on anatomy and classical ways of painting/drawing. I hope to see more of these disciplines as well. Anway, make sure you head on over to Erratic Phenomena to read the interview and check out the gallery for the full preview of works.
