Following Dave MacDowell’s “Miseryland” show at Dirty Pilot, the gallery has released a print based on “The Deer Hunter” painting that was in the show. The print is 16.875″×15″ on 300gms art paper w/one deckled edge. Signed and numbered in an edition of only 19. This is an amazing painting, and sure to spark conversation when people seeing it gracing your walls.

Just this Sunday, January 10th Dirty pilot opened “Miseryland” a solo exhibition of works from Dave MacDowell. The show runs until February 10th, so if your in the area make sure to stop by. There is some really amazing new paintings from Dave in show, such as “Hendrix in Miseryland” (shown) and “The Deer Hunter” (shown). Dave’s sense of humor and crazy way of looking at pop culture is always enjoyable to see in any new works that he creates.

I always enjoy any new work that Dave MacDowell posts. He has such a great style; not only with painting skill but ideas as well. He had a painting on view at the “MultiUniversal” show at Art Basel this past December 3rd, that I had to share. Entitled “Pacino” this painting is 18″ x 14″ and acrylic on canvas. The best part is that the painting style is impasto, not something you see with his work. He is usually very controlled with the painting, but this energetic brushy style is amazing. It still retains the beautiful colors he gets in each of his painting, and the way that he represents the figure, there is just all those brushy little marks that really make this painting pop! Last Thursday, December 3rd at the Flatcolor Gallery the “TWOTHOUSANDTEN” group show opened up. The show features work by Dave MacDowell, Luke Kopycinski, Parskid, Chris Crites, Chris Sheridan, Chip7, Troy Gua, Sohaila Adela, Joe Vollan, Jeffrey Taylor, Mike Wagner and many more. The work is now online to check out. I really like the new pieces from Dave MacDowell, Chris Crites and Luke Kopycinski.
This past week the “Monsters of Pop” group show opened at the Gallery 1988 in LA. The show features work by Netherland, Kiersten Essenpreis, Brandon Bird and Dave MacDowell. While I liked much of the work in the show, Dave MacDowell’s pieces stood out above the rest not only because of the obvious technical skill he possesses, but the amazing ideas that he keeps churning out as well.
He has five works in the show, four of which are homages to popular paintings. Just a little bit after he unleashed “Appetite for Veruca”, a re imagining of Robert Williams controversial “Appetite for Destruction” painting, he gives us a remix of Edward Hopper’s “Nighthawks” and three from Mark Ryden: “Girl Eaten by Tree”, “Allegory of the Four Elements” & “Little Boy Blue”.
I would like to see more artists doing homages like these. There have been a few scandals recently, due to certain artists “copying” another’s work, I see no point. If you are short on ideas or want to try something new, make an homage to a past work of art. But I do feel it is important to make sure that like Dave has, you do the work justice.
Dirty Pilot has just released a new print by Dave MacDowell. “The Samuel Jackson 5″ was first seen at the Thinkspace Gallery for his solo exhibition “The Sins of Atticus Finch”. The original painting is of course sold, but for those that loved this image, you can now get it in print form.
The print is 16.875″ × 15″ Archival Pigment Print on the 300gms art paper w/one deckled edge. Signed and numbered in an edition of 39 for $60 a pop. I’m glad there is now some prints available from Dave. His artwork is such a blast, and sells out pretty quick.

Swarm Gallery will host an exhibition of new works by Josh Keyes.
Perihilion Arts will open “Black Eyed Mouseketeers”, a new series of paintings by Bob Dob. The show is online and looks great.
Cave Gallery will open “Outside my Window”, a group show featuring art by Liz Brizzi, Adam Flores, Max Kauffman and more.
La Luz de Jesus is opening its four shows, as mentioned in an earlier post, with new art from Scott Holloway, Jessica Dalva, Misato Otake & Jasmine Worth.
Varnish Art will be having its last show at the current location, and will end it all with a new solo show entitled “ThankYouGoodbye” with works from Michael Page.
Strychnin Gallery will host “The Red Thread”, which features work by Jennybird Alcantra, Bethany Marchman and Edith Lebeau, who was a featured artist on the Creep Machine. Congrats Edith!

Copro Gallery will open “The Blab! Show” featuring new paintings by Joe Sorren, Andy Kehoe, Alex Gross, Jeff Soto, Femke Hiemstra, Shag, Kris Kuksi, Ryan Heshka, Martin Wittfooth, XNO, Travis Lampe, Owen Smith, Kathleen Lolley, Natalia Fabia, Andrew Brandou, Gary Taxali and more
Disctinction Art will open “Scientific Evolution”, with new artwork from Dan Lyderson, Sean Christopher, Jasmine Worth, Gene Guynn, Christian Van Minnen, Dave MacDowell and more. 10% of proceeds to benefit stem cell research.
The folks over at Graffhead.com have added some pics of the “Canceptual v3″ show that went down at the Crewest Gallery this past month. There is some pretty amazing work in the show. I especially like the cans that Jessica Ward made, you can some better shots of the artwork on her site here. The show also featured some work by Apricot Mantle as well as Dave MacDowell, with his can/painting.

Friday:
Schmancy Toys/Gallery ha s anew solo show from Parskid. The reception is from 6-9pm, and the artists will be in attendance. The work is online and not only is it affordable, but looks excellent.
Eclectix Gallery will host “Eat It”, a group show featuring work by R.S. Connett, Andy B Clarkson, Rudy Fig and many more. There is also works by Mary Patterson on show.
Halogen Gallery formerly known as the Suite 100 Gallery, has a group show with work from Dave Crosland, Phoneticontrol, Matt Linares, Ryan De La Hoz and more.
Thinkspace Gallery has two solo shows opening, “Untitled (New Works)” from Matthew Feyld and “The Sins Of Atticus Finch” from Dave MacDowell.
Roq La Rue Gallery is opening “Neo Grotesque” by Christian van Minnen and new works by Yoko d’Holbachie. The reception is from 6-9pm, and the show runs until April 4th.

Black Maria Gallery will host Ken Garduno’s latest solo show “Channels”. All of the work looks amazing, I love how is he putting small amount of color in each one. A large majority of the work is already sold. The reception is from 7-10:30pm
Distinction Art Gallery is opening “He Said, She Said”, a group show featuring works by Lyle Motley, Ahren Hertel and Ken Keirns. There will also be various work on display throughout the galleries. Ahren has gone a new direction with these new works, I like them a lot and can’t wait to see more of these.
Shooting Gallery SF is hosting “Water Lilies” a new solo show of Joshua Petker. While you there you skip next door to White Walls and see the new works from Alex Lukas.
Billy Shire Fine Arts is opening “Orphan”, new works from Ana Bagayan. The new paintings look amazing, and if you look around a bit you will be able to find videos of Ana painting these works.
The “Everything but the Kitschen Sink” Show opened this last weekend. One of the artists in the show and previously featured artists here on the Creep, Apricot Mantle, took some pics of the show and now has them up on his site to check out. The show looks amazing, I really wish I was able to have been there during the reception. Or just to see it in person even.
