Martin Wittfooth’s “Dark Water” group show @ Copro Gallery

On Saturday, November 12, the Copro Gallery opened a group show sure to make any art fan gaze endlessly at the screen, or in person if your lucky enough. Dark Water is a group show curated by Martin Wittfooth and features the work of: Aron Wiesenfeld, Billy Norrby, Andrew Hem, Adam Miller, Charlie Immer, Alyssa Monks, Steven Assael, Christian Van Minnen, Jenny Morgan, Caitlin Hackett, Brad Kunkle, Dave Cooper, Elizabeth Winnel, Jean-Pierre Roy, Keniche Hoshine, Jean Labourdette (Turf One), Matt Rota, Jason Yarmosky, Nicola Verlato, Phil Hale, John Brophy, Eric White, Josh Keyes, Jeremy Lipking, and even Martin Wittfooth. The thing that makes this show so amazing, besides the outstanding work from each artist, is the idea that this show is really a collection of some of the mot talented, exciting artists creating art today. This show has the ability to give fans of Josh Keyes, Martin Wittfooth, or Jeremy Lipking, an introduction to some other artists that might not have been on their radar. It’s also one of those exhibitions that every work is breathtaking and has the ability to steal the show. Preview: La Luz de Jesus 25

La Luz de Jesus is turning 25 soon, and to celebrate the galleries is having a massive group show, featuring three generations of artists that have shown with the gallery. Not only have more than 200 artists submitted a work of art, but also a small anecdote about their experience with the gallery. There is no doubt that La Luz de Jesus has been a major force in this art scene, and has helped to push many artists into the spotlight. Along with the exhibition a book will be released, going over the past 25 years of the gallery and the surrounding art movements that helped it along. I know I say this quite a lot, but this is one of those shows that you should not miss. I firmly believe that all art should be seen in person, but how often do you get to see so many amazing artists in one show? Robert Williams, Joe Coleman, Mark Ryden, Glenn Barr, Elizabeth McGrath, Gary Panter, Mark Mothersbaugh, Marion Peck, Owen Smith, Frank Kozik, Gail Potocki, Dave Cooper, Daniel Martin Diaz, Laurie Lipton, Shag, Scott Musgrove, Gary Baseman, Tim Biskup, Joe Sorren, Chris Mars, Eric White, The Pizz, Jessica Joslin, Gary Baseman, Bob Dob, Clayton Brothers, Shepard Fairey, Jennybird Alcantra, Carrie Anne Baade, Ana Bagayan, Shawn Barber, Scott G Brooks, Matt Groening, Charlie Immer, Michael Hussar, and the list keeps going.
The show will be in two parts, with the first part opening on October 7th, and the second part opening November 4th. The entire show with all of the works from both parts is now online to view, so head on over after to preview and take a look. There is some outstanding work in this show. Preview: “INLE” group show curated by Greg ‘Craola’ Simkins @ Gallery 1988

Opening March 11th at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles is a group show curated by artist Greg ‘Craola’ Simkins. The show entitled “INLE”, will feature over 100 artists drawing inspiration from Richard Adams’ award winning book, WaterShip Down, and more specifically the Black Rabbit of Inlé. “In The Trees: TWIN PEAKS 20th Anniversary Art Exhibition”

Opening tonight, February 12th, in Los Angeles at Clifton’s Brookdale is a group show dedicated to David Lynch’s cult television series “Twin Peaks”. The show will feature work by Glenn Barr, Tim Biskup, Scott Campbell, Paul Chatem, Ryan Heshka, Stella Im Hultberg, Ashley Wood, Jessica Joslin, Chris Mars, Liz McGrath, Eric White, and more. Clifton’s Brookdale is a very unique restaurant, however the artwork for the show has been placed online so those of us that aren’t able to make it to the show, and grab some food, will be able to check of some of this outstanding work. I really like what Stella Im Hultberg came up with, the contrast and colors are perfect.

Jason D’Aquino & Lead Poisoning @ Last Rites Gallery

This past Saturday, July 10th, two amazing shows opened at the Last Rites Gallery in New York. First a solo show of new works by Jason D’Aquino, and then a drawing group show called “Lead Poisoning”. Just a few of the artists that participated in the group show are: Esao Andrews, Carrie Anne Baade, Glenn Barr, Dave MacDowell, Scott G Brooks, Daniel Martin Diaz, Ron English, Chris Mars, Chet Zar, David Stoupakis, Eric White, Tara McPherson, and many more.

Jason D’Aquino’s show was a perfect blend of his smaller matchbook pieces, and some larger works done on various types of antiqued paper. There is also two prints available: “Plague” which is 8″ x 18″ limited to 50, and “Antique Flash Poster” at 18″ x 24″ for $40. Jason has such an amazing style. The way he draws, his characters, and the found paper that he uses really helps to create a unique and nostalgic feel. I especially like the piece “Don Post (Masks)” (shown), it reminds me of being a kid and wanting to collect every mask Don Post ever created.

100 Artists See Satan Fundraiser

First seen in 2004, the Grand Central Art Center is reviving the hit exhibition “100 Artists See Satan”, now available in paperback. This years show features 100 of the most talented contemporary artists giving their interpretation of the devil, and as opposed to the first version of the show, this one will be a fundraiser with “All proceeds will benefit future GCAC programs and exhibitions”. The exhibition will run from June 26th to August 15th, so if you are around the Santa Ana area make sure to stop by. Just a few of the artists that will be participating in this show are: Peter Adamyan, Ron English, Robert Williams, Tara McPherson, Jeff McMillan, Ana Bagayan, Scott G Brooks, Luke Chueh, Dalek, Coop, Korin Faught, Mercedes Helnwein, Camille Rose Garcia, Alex Grey, Chris Mars, Scott Musgrove, Mark Ryden, Mike Shine, Christopher Ulrich, Eric White, Laurie Lipton and many more.

A majority of the work is pretty amazing. I’m not the biggest fan of Gary Baseman’s work but I really like the drawing he submitted. Eric White’s painting “Nope”, freaks me right out. There is also a good amount of prints we have seen before, but its nice that these artists submitted work to a good cause. Here is the list of shows opening up this weekend, looks like it’s going to be one of the busy ones.

Friday:
Double Punch will open “The Right Place”, a group show featuring new works by Kelly Tunstall, Scott Barry, Ryan Bubnis & Alexei Vella.

Rotofugi will host “Flower Parade”, a duo show featuring new works by Jeremiah Ketner and Julie West

Thinkspace Gallery will be opening “Run Rabbit, Run” the latest solo show of Brandi Milne. Also in the project room will be “trouble, clearly” by Cherri Wood and “BLOOD & STEEL” by Alex Garcia. I love Brandi’s new work.

Roq La Rue will be debuting two new shows, “Hiding Out” by Nathan Ota and “The Casual Calamity” by Anthony Pontius.

Saturday:
Gallery Nucleus opens up Grafuck 4 art exhibit and book release.

Black Maria Gallery will be opening “Spring Bazaar”, featuring new works by Juri Ueda, Jamie Fales, Julie Nishioka, Jenna Colby & Tsai-fi. One the project wall will be new works by Saratoga Sake.

Distinction Art will open “Tractus Secretum”, the latest solo exhibition of Aaron Jasinski.

Lebasse Projects will open “Future Perfect” from Tessar Lo & “Lost In Light” from Eric Fortune. The new works from Eric are amazing.

Corey Helford Gallery is opening “Haute Epoch”, the latest solo show of Sylvia Ji. Two limited edition prints will be available at the show.
