La Luz de Jesus is turning 25 soon, and to celebrate the galleries is having a massive group show, featuring three generations of artists that have shown with the gallery. Not only have more than 200 artists submitted a work of art, but also a small anecdote about their experience with the gallery. There is no doubt that La Luz de Jesus has been a major force in this art scene, and has helped to push many artists into the spotlight. Along with the exhibition a book will be released, going over the past 25 years of the gallery and the surrounding art movements that helped it along. I know I say this quite a lot, but this is one of those shows that you should not miss. I firmly believe that all art should be seen in person, but how often do you get to see so many amazing artists in one show? Robert Williams, Joe Coleman, Mark Ryden, Glenn Barr, Elizabeth McGrath, Gary Panter, Mark Mothersbaugh, Marion Peck, Owen Smith, Frank Kozik, Gail Potocki, Dave Cooper, Daniel Martin Diaz, Laurie Lipton, Shag, Scott Musgrove, Gary Baseman, Tim Biskup, Joe Sorren, Chris Mars, Eric White, The Pizz, Jessica Joslin, Gary Baseman, Bob Dob, Clayton Brothers, Shepard Fairey, Jennybird Alcantra, Carrie Anne Baade, Ana Bagayan, Shawn Barber, Scott G Brooks, Matt Groening, Charlie Immer, Michael Hussar, and the list keeps going.
The show will be in two parts, with the first part opening on October 7th, and the second part opening November 4th. The entire show with all of the works from both parts is now online to view, so head on over after to preview and take a look. There is some outstanding work in this show. Below are just a few of my favorites.
7th Annual Blab Show & Ryan Heshka @ Copro Gallery
In anticipation of the upcoming BLABWORLD No. 2 and 3, Copro Gallery opened the 7th Annual “Blab Show” featuring work by many of the best artists working today, such as: Joe Sorren, Ana Bagayan, Shag, Marc Burckhardt, Chet Zar, Martin Wittfooth, R.S. Connett, Laurie Hogin, Sas Christian, Ryan Heshka, Gary Baseman, Owen Smith, Alex Kuno, and many more. Ryan Heshka was not only in the group show, but opened his latest solo exhibition “Strange Powers 2″ at the gallery as well. The great thing about this new show by Heshka, was that along with the paintings he also offered original drawings and sketches, that were used to prepare for the paintings. It was a great way to give the fans an insight into the working process, and show off Ryan’s drawing skills as well.
Tim Biskup launches new web site
Tim Biskup has recently redesigned his homepage, and has made it easier for fans to check out his work, keep up to date with news and so on. The gallery is now done in a way where you can see all the work on one page dating all the way back to 2000, and see some art you might have never seen before such as this collaboration between Tim Biskup, Gary Baseman, and Mark Ryden entitled “Snowy Black Luck”. Corey Helford – “Zero to Sixty” 5 Year Anniversary Group Show
Currently on view at the Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City, CA is the 5th Year Anniversary Group Show featuring many of the artists that the gallery frequently showcases. Work by Korin Faught, Sas Christian, Shag, Stella Im Hultberg, Jason Shawn Alexander, Natalia Fabia, Colin Christian, Sylvia Ji, Tom Bagshaw, Gary Baseman, Amy Sol, Kent Williams, Greg Simkins, Mia, Hush, Billy Norrby, Joey Remmers, Gary Taxali, Van Arno, Brandi Milne, Scott G Brooks, David Stoupakis, Ron English, Todd Schorr, Chris Anthony, Ray Ceasar, and many more. The show is only on view for 13 days before being taken down as a new show by COOP will be opening on the 15th of July.
Pressure Printing’s Secret Stash
Pressure Printing has recently opened a new web store, or kind of a web store. What it is is original works of art and sold out editions that are from the personal collection of Pressure Printing. These works are available nowhere else. Work by Gary Baseman, Dave Cooper, Dave McKean, Clayton Brothers, Robert Hardgrave, Ryan Heshka, Amy Crehore, Robert Crumb and even Takashi Murakami are available. New things will come and go so make sure to keep your eye on the site. If anything this Tumblr shop is a great way to check out some art that you might have never seen, or haven’t seen for quite a while such as “Springtime” by Dave Cooper below.
Preview: Playboy Redux II @ Copro Nason
Opening this Saturday, December 18th at Copro Nason is the second showing of the Playboy Redux Group Exhibition. The first showing was at Rotofugi Gallery, and from the looks of it there is a few new artists added to the show this time around. This second showing will feature work by Bob Doucette, Glenn Barr, Isabel Samaras, Frank Kozik, Tara McPherson, Brian Viveros, Scott Anderson, TIN, Vincent Cacciotti, Luke Chueh, Dan Quintana, Keith Weesner, William Wray, Gary Baseman, Leslie Ditto, Lisa Petrucci, Lang Leav, Brian Ewing, Andrew Schoultz, Shaunna Peterson, Jennybird Alcantra, Ken Keirns, Ain Cocke, Jeremiah Ketner, Travis Lampe, Anthony Ausgang, R. Black, Jeremy Tinder, Erik Alos, Bonni Reid, Mark Bodnar, Nouar, Shag, and more. I like Bob Doucette’s painting, with inspiration taken from “Venus Anadyomène” by Ingres. “Playboy Redux” @ Rotofugi Gallery
The Play Enterprise and Warhol Museum asked over 20 artist to reinterpret the classic bunny imagery. The show as first shown at the Warhol Museum in Pittsburg, but has been given a second go round at the Rotofugi Gallery. The participating list of artists is amazing: Jennybird Alcantara, Glenn Barr, Gary Baseman, Tim Biskup, Brian Ewing, Jeremy Fish, Mike Giant, Ken Keirns, Jeremiah Ketner, Frank Kozik, Travis Lampe, Tara McPherson, Lisa Petrucci, Bonni Reid, Isabel Samaras, Andrew Schoultz, Jeremy Tinder, and many more. Many of the paintings look pretty spectacular, and fit the Playboy theme very well. I especially like Glenn Barr’s, Jeremy Fish, Tara McPherson, Keith Weesner, Ken Keirns, and Isabel Samaras all of which are shown below. “Art From the New World” @ Bristol City Musuem
Curated by Jan Corey Helford, this past May 15th marked the opening of the “Art From the New World” group exhibition at the Bristol City Museum & Art Gallery. This show will run until August 22nd, but for those of us that aren’t able to see it in person, we now have some images of the art and even behind the scenes photos of the preparation and build up to opening day (see here).
Last year the Bristol City Museum featured the works of Banksy, and during the course of the exhibition over 300,000 visited the museum. Now for the “Art From the New World” show, there have been over 5,000 visitors in the first 6 days of the opening. This is not only a very exciting show, but an important one for the future of the art we love so much. Originally referred to as a scene filled with “illustrators”, this art is now gaining more momentum than ever. Museums are taking notice, and the fan-base is becoming larger than ever. There is some amazing work in this show, from artists such as Kent Williams, David Stoupakis, Joe Sorren, Brandi Milne, Buff Monster, Camille Rose Garcia, Dave Kinsey, Travis Louie, Mercedes Helnwein, Ray Ceasar, Sas Christian, Melissa Forman, Jason Shawn Alexander, Dave Cooper, Liz McGrath, Mike Stilkey, Gary Baseman, Craola, Luke Chueh, Coop, Natalia Fabia, Chris Anthony, AJ Fosik, Joe Ledbetter, Todd Schorr, Van Arno, Martin Wittfooth, Josh Agle, Lola, Sylvia Ji, Marion Peck, Mark Ryden and many more. Prints: “Hint Mints” illustrations by James Jean
It’s been a year long in the making, and now the James Jean “Hint Mints” series is finally finished. Previous series featured such artists as Glenn Barr, Owen Smith, Gary Baseman and Shag. The mint tins should be ready for purchase soon, but for those that fancy prints instead James has added open editions of these illustrations in the Process Recess online shop. Each one of the prints is 17″ x 21″ on ultrasmooth art paper, signed and embossed for $85 each.
“Save Dangerous INK” auction
Dangerous INK magazine is having an auction to help keep the mag on the stands. A bunch of original artwork as well as prints have been donated. It’s got to be hard competing with mags like Juxtapoz and Hi-Fructose, but there’s always room for another publication about art. The auction has an original painting by Chet Zar and Leslie Ditto, and prints by Liz McGrath, Gary Baseman, Amy Sol and A.Andrew Gonzalez.
