The Art Amry Royalty x Mike Leavitt @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Over the weekend the Jonathan Levine Gallery opened two solo shows, the one that really caught my attention was the new “Art Army Royalty” by Mike Leavitt. Each one of these figures is based on a member of the art world that could easily be considered royalty, even though I gnash my teeth when thinking of a few of these artists placed in the same perch as the others. Each figure is made with polymer clay and is sat upon a custom made display that also has a metal name tag. I love how each artist is designed in a way that brings their own art into the presentation; this is most prominent with Ai WeiWei, Barbara Kruger, Gerhard Richter, Jeff Koons, Takashi Murakami, and Damien Hirst. Head on over and took a look at the entire show, each one of these figures is outstanding.

Van Arno – “The Minstrel Cycle” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

On April 16th, the Jonathan Levine Gallery opened a new solo show from Los Angeles artist Van Arno. This is the artist’s first solo show at the gallery, and features some of his biggest paintings yet. The exhibition is entitled “The Minstrel Cycle” and the show title “references minstrelsy, a controversial form of entertainment from the 1800s, in which performers in blackface lampooned African-American culture through comic-musical variety acts loaded with racial stereotypes.” There are seven paintings in this show, and continue Van Arno’s always exciting, dynamically posed mythical and historical figurative paintings. In the artist’s words: “I attempt to paint the archetypical moment of clarity and passion. Imagery must be made exciting and alive. Rules of lighting, anatomy, gravity and physics must be bent or broken to make the picture LOUD. That is the ultimate goal of my work.” Van Arno’s paintings are consistently filled with some of the most intense colors, layouts, and contorted and stylized figures around. Along with images of the paintings, the gallery also has some shots that show the paintings hung, giving online viewers an idea of scale.

New prints by James Jean

James Jean’s solo show at the Jonathan Levin Gallery is now over. Except for a couple of limited edition prints, the show is all sold out.

Over on Process Recess James has added a bunch of new prints based on the works in the show. “Vanity” and “Maze” have been there for a bit, but the four portraits are new. The “hare” print (shown) that was given away for free, is now in the shop but doesn’t have the show name and info on it. Each print is 17″ x 22″, Giclee on Ultrasmooth Fine Art Paper. All of the prints found in the shop are open-edition, so be careful when your looking for prints on Ebay. I have seen a few of these prints sell for four times the price because the buyer didn’t know any better.

“Hare”, James Jean Show Poster

James Jean has a solo show coming up at the Jonathan Levine Gallery this coming January. The show is going to be amazing and I can’t wait to see what he has in store for us all. The Levine Gallery always has the images from the show up super fast, and the site is a joy to browse around in.

It looks like James has put up a downloadable version of the show poster up on his site. You can print it out pretty big, I got mine to around 10″ x 12″ and it looks fantastic, I have some Rives BFK to print this onto as well. Grab some nice paper and go to town, he said you can “Feel free to download, distribute, print out, and share with friends, family, and uninitiates.” Thank to Hi-Fructose to this news.
