Prints: “Love Bite” by Laurie Lipton

The Loyal Subjects have just released a new limited edition print by graphite virtuoso Laurie Lipton. The print is made from “Love Bite”, an image that features a mother biting the head of a infant, and as stated on the page “is evocative of Grimm’s fairy tales where the children are eaten by the witch, or Goya’s “Saturn Eating His Children”. The print is 24″ x 34″ on archival cotton rag paper, signed and numbered in an edition of 213. This is a very large print, one that is sure to help show off those drawing skills.

Preview: Laurie Lipton: The Carnival Of Death @ Last Rites

On October 1st, Last Rites Gallery in New York will be opening the latest solo exhibition from Laurie Lipton. Entitled The Carnival Of Death, this now show features 19 graphite drawings, and on October 2nd from 4 – 6 PM, the gallery will host Looking Lightly On Death, an art discussion and book signing. Laurie will go over her new show, drawing techniques, and thoughts on the afterlife all while patrons enjoy some tea and prepare questions for the artist. She will also be signing copies of her book Extraordinary Drawings, which will be available at the gallery. I’ve only been able to see Laurie’s work in person a few times, but I can assure you that it is work the trip. It’s not often you get to see graphite works of this scale and precision; the content alone makes this is a must see show.

Preview: Varnish Fine Art Relaunch Part I

Varnish Fine Art in San Francisco was forced to leave their previous location, due to some construction projects going on at the time. It was one of my favorite galleries to visit, as the space was not only beautiful but they consistently showed amazing art. It was at Varnish that I saw works by Jennybird Alcantra, Chris Mars, Michael Page, and Ron English for the first time. Well they have a new location, very close to the old one, and are having their official relaunch exhbition opening this Saturday Night, September 24th. This show will feature works from 21 artists that are represented by Varnish such as Chris Mars, Robert Williams, Jennybird Alcantra, Laurie Lipton, Isabel Samaras, Scott Musgrove, Annie Owens, Craig LaRotonda , Nathan Spoor, Kevin Peterson, Beth Bojarski, Edith Lebeau (featured), Aunia Kahn, Ciou, Robert Bowen, and more. The reception goes from 4 – 8 PM, and the show will run up until November 5th.

Preview: La Luz de Jesus 25

La Luz de Jesus is turning 25 soon, and to celebrate the galleries is having a massive group show, featuring three generations of artists that have shown with the gallery. Not only have more than 200 artists submitted a work of art, but also a small anecdote about their experience with the gallery. There is no doubt that La Luz de Jesus has been a major force in this art scene, and has helped to push many artists into the spotlight. Along with the exhibition a book will be released, going over the past 25 years of the gallery and the surrounding art movements that helped it along. I know I say this quite a lot, but this is one of those shows that you should not miss. I firmly believe that all art should be seen in person, but how often do you get to see so many amazing artists in one show? Robert Williams, Joe Coleman, Mark Ryden, Glenn Barr, Elizabeth McGrath, Gary Panter, Mark Mothersbaugh, Marion Peck, Owen Smith, Frank Kozik, Gail Potocki, Dave Cooper, Daniel Martin Diaz, Laurie Lipton, Shag, Scott Musgrove, Gary Baseman, Tim Biskup, Joe Sorren, Chris Mars, Eric White, The Pizz, Jessica Joslin, Gary Baseman, Bob Dob, Clayton Brothers, Shepard Fairey, Jennybird Alcantra, Carrie Anne Baade, Ana Bagayan, Shawn Barber, Scott G Brooks, Matt Groening, Charlie Immer, Michael Hussar, and the list keeps going.
The show will be in two parts, with the first part opening on October 7th, and the second part opening November 4th. The entire show with all of the works from both parts is now online to view, so head on over after to preview and take a look. There is some outstanding work in this show. Below are just a few of my favorites.

Limited edition etchings by Laurie Lipton

Mastermind of graphite, Laurie Lipton has some limited edition etchings now available in her online shop. The great thing about etchings is the clarity of the print, and with Laurie’s intense detail, etchings are the best choice. The etchings range is size, but are around 17″ x 20″, signed and numbered by the artist in editions of 60.

Laurie Lipton and Jessica Joslin @ La Luz de Jesus Gallery

As the end of the year slowly creeps in, there have been some outstanding shows and they keep on coming. This Friday, November 5th at La Luz de Jesus is a duo show with new works from Laurie Lipton and Jessica Joslin. The highly anticipated, and quickly selling, “Machine Punk” show by Laurie Lipton is inspired by the Steampunk craze, but Laurie has changed it a little and states that “my devices are mostly run by electricity and madness.” Jessica Joslin’s “Hybrids” show is a “circus of oddities, a mixed-media menagerie of unexpected creatures.” Both shows look amazing and are now online to view. If you are in the area, make sure to stop by as this work needs to be seen up close.

13th Hour @ Last Rites Gallery

The most recent incarnation of the 13th Hour group show at the Last Rites Gallery opened this past Friday, October 29th. I am told by a few of the artist that attended the reception, that all went well, and it was one of the best show yet. The full show is now online to view, and seeing how today is Halloween you might want to head on over and check out some of the art. There is some really amazing work in this show, once again Scott G Brooks creates a mind-blowing painting, and I love how Sarah Joncas created something creepy in a Hitchcock kind of way.

Halloween 2010 Feature

Halloween is upon us again, one of my favorite times of the year. Not only is it filled with great memories of being a kid, eating too much candy and watching horror movies late into the night, but this season is when some of the creepiest art is made. This is the second year I have posted a Halloween feature, and hopefully this one is even better. Head on over to the feature page and see work by: Chris Murray, Charlie Immer, Apricot Mantle, Scott Move, Naoto Hattori, Jessica Ward, Dean McDowell, Esao Andrews, Brian Smith, Dennis Brown, Dan Harding, Ryan Heshka, Celene Petrulak, Adrian Borda, Ego, Buddy Nestor, Edward Frausto, Laurie Lipton, Dave MacDowell, Jehan Choo, Natalie Shau, Joshua Carlton, Dan Hipp, Dienzo, Sarah Joncas, Chet Zar, Chris Brodahl, JR Williams, Tom Haubrick, Nicole Absher, Larkin, and Nouar.

If there is any art you find creepy, that hasn’t been added to this gallery, add the link to the art in the comments.

“Weirdo Noir” book by Matt Dukes Jordan

The author of the book “Weirdo Deluxe”, is back with a new book talking the gothic and dark art scene. The book is 9″ x 9″, 192 pages and features work from more than 20 artists such as Attaboy, Ana Bagayan, Glenn Barr, Jonathan Bergeron, Ray Ceasar, Jason d’Aquino, Bob Dob, Alex Gross, Sarah Joncas, Annette Hassell, Fred Harper, Dan Kennedy, Laurie Lipton, Travis Louie, Tara McPherson, Skot Olsen, Nathan Ota, Annie Owens, Anthony Pontius, Isabel Samaras, Shag, Dani Tull, Brian Viveros, and Edward Walton Wilcox.
I enjoyed Weirdo Deluxe quite a bit, and this book seems like a good followup. I’m not sure if I agree about the “noir”, or as stated in the description “artists who have embraced the dark side, employing gothic themes in their art.” There are a few artists in that list that have dark works for sure, but maybe I just have a different definition of “dark and gothic”.
