Prints: Red King by Michael Hussar

Michael Hussar has dropped his second limited edition print of 2012 since Modern Devotionalback in February (featured). This print entitled Red King is 12.5 x 9.5″ inches, signed, numbered, and titled in an edition of 88 and also comes with a certificate of authenticity. As with most prints I have seen by Birdbath Publishing, this print is sure to look outstanding, is on top-notch rag paper, and presented and shipped in the best way possible.

Also, for fans that happen to live in London—or can simply fly over there—on Sept 28-30th, Micheal Hussar will be at the 8th International London Tattoo Convention. On Saturday, Michael will be giving an “Alla Prima” painting demo, so if you have ever wanted to see Hussar paint in person, and paint in the Alla Prima fashion which is simply “at once”, make sure you are there. Otherwise he will be at another location following the convention. Full details on the site here: London Tattoo Convention.

Two new prints by Michael Hussar

Birdbath Publishing has just released two new prints by Michael Hussar. Its been quite a while since any new prints have been released, and these new ones are well worth the wait. The first print is Modern Devotional, and was first seen at Last Rites Gallery in 2008 for the 13th Hour Group show. The print is 8.5″ x 11″ on 100% cotton rag paper, signed and numbered in an edition of 88. The next print is a self portrait, and is based on a drawing. Not only is it rare when a new print by Hussar is released, but even more so when its a drawing such as this. The print is 15″ x 19″ on 100% cotton rag paper, signed and numbered in an edition of 44. Both prints also come with a certificate of authenticity.

Books: Pre-order “White: A Decade” by Michael Hussar

Back in 2010 at the Alternative Press Expo (reviewed), I talked about a new book in the works from Baby Tattoo for artist Michael Hussar. The book, entitled White: A Decade is now finally ready for pre-order and from the preview images, looks amazing. If the news around the net is correct, the book is roughly 8″ x 11″ and 250 pages.

The book will be released in Italy this February, and then in March 1st there will be a release and signing in Los Angeles. For any order placed via the link below, the book will not arrive until a few days after the 1st, but will come with a hand-signed bookplate by Hussar. I have also heard that there will be a limited edition run of this book later on, possibly with a hard slipcase, prints, etc. For now, I am excited this book is finally here. Take a look at the preview images below, pulled from Michael Hussar’s Facebook feed, and then head over to pre-order the book.

The 13th Hour 4th Annual Group Show @ Last Rites

Just a few days before Halloween, on October 28th, Last Rites Gallery in New York opened the 4th annual group show The 13th Hour. The gallery is known for consistently showing the best in dark and surreal art, and the 13th Hour is a show that focuses on dark surrealist works from a broad variety of artists. This year the list of participating artists included: Shawn Barber, Matthew Bone, Paul Booth, Colin Christian, Sas Christian, Jason D’aquino, Tom Gabriel Fischer, HR Giger, Fred Harper, Naoto Hattori, Michael Hussar, Joka, Sarah Joncas, Aunia Kahn, Michael Mararian, Chris Mars, Annie Owens, Chris Peters, Anthony Pontius, Dan Quintana, David Stoupakis, and many more.
Aside from the outstanding dark art shows the gallery opens month after month, I love the shows that feature dark works of art from artists that rarely contribute to these types of shows, and art from those you might not have expected, such as Self Deceased XXXII by Tom Gabriel Fisher — otherwise known as Tom Warrior of Celtic Frost fame and most recently Triptykon. Eli Livingston also created a sculpture, one that seems to be able to light up from the inside. leslie Ditto also created some prints from her painting Witching Hour, that might still be available from her Facebook page. If your in the area make sure to stop by and see these works in person, you have until November 27th. Otherwise the show is now online to view.

Preview: La Luz de Jesus 25

La Luz de Jesus is turning 25 soon, and to celebrate the galleries is having a massive group show, featuring three generations of artists that have shown with the gallery. Not only have more than 200 artists submitted a work of art, but also a small anecdote about their experience with the gallery. There is no doubt that La Luz de Jesus has been a major force in this art scene, and has helped to push many artists into the spotlight. Along with the exhibition a book will be released, going over the past 25 years of the gallery and the surrounding art movements that helped it along. I know I say this quite a lot, but this is one of those shows that you should not miss. I firmly believe that all art should be seen in person, but how often do you get to see so many amazing artists in one show? Robert Williams, Joe Coleman, Mark Ryden, Glenn Barr, Elizabeth McGrath, Gary Panter, Mark Mothersbaugh, Marion Peck, Owen Smith, Frank Kozik, Gail Potocki, Dave Cooper, Daniel Martin Diaz, Laurie Lipton, Shag, Scott Musgrove, Gary Baseman, Tim Biskup, Joe Sorren, Chris Mars, Eric White, The Pizz, Jessica Joslin, Gary Baseman, Bob Dob, Clayton Brothers, Shepard Fairey, Jennybird Alcantra, Carrie Anne Baade, Ana Bagayan, Shawn Barber, Scott G Brooks, Matt Groening, Charlie Immer, Michael Hussar, and the list keeps going.
The show will be in two parts, with the first part opening on October 7th, and the second part opening November 4th. The entire show with all of the works from both parts is now online to view, so head on over after to preview and take a look. There is some outstanding work in this show. Below are just a few of my favorites.

“Mischa” original drawing by Michael Hussar

Michael Hussar has just put up an original drawing for sale. “Mischa” is 5″ x 7″ drawing, charcoal and mixed media on paper, and is signed and framed. I have always been a fan of the drawings that Michael releases, but this one is especially captivating. The way the charcoal is applied gives you an idea of how fragile the work is, and that splash of color, watercolor I believe, used for the lips is very striking. The lips still have that ‘smudgy’ style that Michael is know for, and the frame that was chosen fits the work perfectly.

“Lamb of God” print by Michael Hussar

Birdbath Publishing has just released a new print by Michael Hussar, one that many have been waiting on for quite some time. I first saw the original “Lamb of God” at the SF Fetish Ball Art Show and was amazed at the colors, and textures seen in the work. The print is now available for those like me that have been waiting for one. 12″ x 24″, signed and numbered, and titled in an edition of 88 on museum-quality 100% cotton rag using the finest archival inks available. Each print also comes with a certificate of authenticity. I know these prints will not last long, so make sure you head over before it is too late.
