Review: Obey Your Master Art Tribute to Metallica

This past weekend a group show dedicated to the music of Metallica opened at the Exhibit A Gallery. While I was not able to attend the show, friend of the Creep Machine Brennan was able to make it to the show, take some photos, and write a short review for us. Take it away.

So a few weeks ago I received an email about an invite only show coming up at Exhibit A Gallery here in Los Angeles. It was for a show entitled Obey Your Master and was going to be a group show with artists paying tribute to one of the greatest metal bands of all time, Metallica. The list of participating artists was a who’s who of the current art scene. You had everyone from Travis Louie to Shawn Barber and Sylvia Ji to Shepard Fairey all with pieces re-interpreting some Metallica songs into art. I was obviously very stoked to be able to attend this show, and it did not disappoint at all.

Mad new work from John Cebollero

If you watch Cartoon Network you might have noticed they have a new cartoon based off Mad Magazine. I have heard quite a few people say that it’s what the comedy sketch series should have been. I have watched a few clips on their website, and they are pretty funny. John Cebollero has recently released some drawings that were made for this series, and I wanted to share them here. These drawings show how versatile John is, and how amazing his art can be with only a pencil. The “True Grit” drawing really shows his chops. The titles of each drawing will show what movie they parody. See more of John’s work at his homepage listed below.

“Art From the New World” @ Bristol City Musuem

Curated by Jan Corey Helford, this past May 15th marked the opening of the “Art From the New World” group exhibition at the Bristol City Museum & Art Gallery. This show will run until August 22nd, but for those of us that aren’t able to see it in person, we now have some images of the art and even behind the scenes photos of the preparation and build up to opening day (see here).

Last year the Bristol City Museum featured the works of Banksy, and during the course of the exhibition over 300,000 visited the museum. Now for the “Art From the New World” show, there have been over 5,000 visitors in the first 6 days of the opening. This is not only a very exciting show, but an important one for the future of the art we love so much. Originally referred to as a scene filled with “illustrators”, this art is now gaining more momentum than ever. Museums are taking notice, and the fan-base is becoming larger than ever. There is some amazing work in this show, from artists such as Kent Williams, David Stoupakis, Joe Sorren, Brandi Milne, Buff Monster, Camille Rose Garcia, Dave Kinsey, Travis Louie, Mercedes Helnwein, Ray Ceasar, Sas Christian, Melissa Forman, Jason Shawn Alexander, Dave Cooper, Liz McGrath, Mike Stilkey, Gary Baseman, Craola, Luke Chueh, Coop, Natalia Fabia, Chris Anthony, AJ Fosik, Joe Ledbetter, Todd Schorr, Van Arno, Martin Wittfooth, Josh Agle, Lola, Sylvia Ji, Marion Peck, Mark Ryden and many more. How is that for a lineup? I really wish this show was going to travel and come to some museums here in the states. Take a look at the preview images here, and then head over for the full preview.

Review: Sylvia Ji @ StolenSpace Gallery

Just this past month Sylvia Ji had a solo show in London, and of course I wasn’t able to go to that one no matter how much I would have wanted to. Emma Mount attended the reception, and I was able to get some pictures and a little write-up from her. Thanks Emma!

‘Nectar’ is LA artist Sylvia Ji’s first show in the UK running 03.09.09 – 27.09.09

Stolen Space Gallery is sited in the Brick Lane area of London, a vibrant East End hub of fashion and art, the area has an eclectic mix of many curry houses (thanks to its Bangladeshi community) alongside vintage bric-a-brac and retro clothing stores.

I have long been a fan of Sylvia Ji, and not sure I would ever get to see her paintings first hand I was full of anticipation. After a couple of wrong turns in which we discovered some outstanding graffiti, we finally happened upon this tucked away gallery. The gallery is a very basic small open white space, but as such all the better for being able to take in all these works in one glorious view on entering, and we felt we’d found the Holy Grail.

Daily Du Jour has posted some show photos of “Haute Epoch”, Sylvia Ji’s solo show at the Corey Helford Gallery. The receptions looks like it was a blast, I would have loved to see her new paintings in person.

Head on over and take a look.
