John Larriva (previously featured) has added some new work to his homepage and etsy site. Along with new oil paintings, he has also released some sculptures. I have been a fan of his work since the moment I saw “Lithium Lynn.” Each of his paintings are filled with color, and the way he handles the paint is outstanding.

Aotd: “Girl in the Window” by Peter C Matthews
I haven’t posted an Art of the Day image for a while as I have been finishing up school, but I am now nearing the end and what to get this section going again. So todays painting is from Peter C Matthews, an artist out of South Africa. Most of his work is figural in a variety of mediums, with some landscapes and wildlife as well. “Girl in the Window” is based off a photo he found on the internet, and recreated in oil. The image is very mysterious and ghostly, and in a way has a tenebrous style to it. I would love to see Matthews do a whole series of portraits in this style.

“Small White Cosmonaut†print Jeremy Geddes
This Sunday, May 23rd Jeremy Geddes will be releasing a new print. ““Small White Cosmonaut†is 13″ x 13”, signed and numbered in an edition of 200 for $95 AUD (roughly 80 USD). Jeremy is a phenomenal painter, and this print is one of the cheapest ones he has released lately. The pose is very reminiscent of “Resurrection” paintings made from the Renaissance. I can’t put my finger on which one exactly.

“Art From the New World” @ Bristol City Musuem
Curated by Jan Corey Helford, this past May 15th marked the opening of the “Art From the New World” group exhibition at the Bristol City Museum & Art Gallery. This show will run until August 22nd, but for those of us that aren’t able to see it in person, we now have some images of the art and even behind the scenes photos of the preparation and build up to opening day (see here).
Last year the Bristol City Museum featured the works of Banksy, and during the course of the exhibition over 300,000 visited the museum. Now for the “Art From the New World” show, there have been over 5,000 visitors in the first 6 days of the opening. This is not only a very exciting show, but an important one for the future of the art we love so much. Originally referred to as a scene filled with “illustrators”, this art is now gaining more momentum than ever. Museums are taking notice, and the fan-base is becoming larger than ever. There is some amazing work in this show, from artists such as Kent Williams, David Stoupakis, Joe Sorren, Brandi Milne, Buff Monster, Camille Rose Garcia, Dave Kinsey, Travis Louie, Mercedes Helnwein, Ray Ceasar, Sas Christian, Melissa Forman, Jason Shawn Alexander, Dave Cooper, Liz McGrath, Mike Stilkey, Gary Baseman, Craola, Luke Chueh, Coop, Natalia Fabia, Chris Anthony, AJ Fosik, Joe Ledbetter, Todd Schorr, Van Arno, Martin Wittfooth, Josh Agle, Lola, Sylvia Ji, Marion Peck, Mark Ryden and many more. “Jin & Sun” Lost Print by Tara McPherson
There is a new print by Tara McPherson. A series of Lost inspired posters have been dropping, each one designed by a different artist. So far prints from Daniel Danger, Jeff Soto and now Tara McPherson have been added to the site. This new one is a 6 color screenprint 24″ x 18″, signed and numbered in an edition of 500 for $50 each. If you look at the second photo, you can see that some metallic ink was also used in the print.

Profiles: Ruadh DeLone
Ruadh DeLone is a photographer out of Rheden, Netherlands. He started out drawing as a child and then moved to photography in 2007. His work focuses on portraiture with a bit of surrealism. DeLone has quite a few series of works; one inspired by his inspiration from Dutch Baroque painter Johannes Vermeer, and another series entitled “Vergänglichkeiten” which I believe means ‘transiency.’ This series features figures with the face slightly obscured by plastic, and a ghostly image of skulls and bones overlaid on the face. “The Longing” special edition print by Chet Zar
Chet Zar just added a new print to his online shop. “The Longing” is a 13″ x 19″ giclee print on velvet fine art paper, signed and numbered in an edition of 100 for $100 each. This new print comes from a painting that was in Chet’s solo show “Lilith” that took place at the Copro Gallery lasy October 2009. It’s an amazing image, and I know the print quality of Chet’s work is top notch.

Scott Musgrove & Louie Cordero @ Jonathan Levine Gallery
This past Saturday, May 15th, the Jonathan Levine Gallery opened the latest solo show from Scott Musgrove entitled “How is the Empire?”, as well as the debut “Sacred Bones” show by Louie Cordero. This is Scott’s second solo show at the gallery and features new oil paintings, drawings, as well as some small and large-scale sculptural work. There is quite a lot of work in this show, and I love the idea that there is such a variety in mediums.
