Opening this Saturday, April 30th at the Last Rites Gallery in New York is two solo shows, Lilith by Sarah Joncas, and The Decay by Anthony Pontius. Sarah Joncas is using the Lilith myth more as what the character represents, not a direct reference. As stated in the press release “the women I’m portraying in these pieces are bolder, more sexual and more mature than those of my previous work, I’ve decidedly brought back some of the whimsy that I’d abandoned after years of schooling.” Anthony Pontius is using a mixed approach to painting to create new myths, “a story that is familiar yet it has not been cultivated by anyone.”

Review: “Island of the Colorblind” – Paul Chatem @ Shooting Gallery
On Saturday, April 9th, the Shooting Gallery in San Francisco opened the first solo show of Paul Chatem. Paul has shown quite a few times at the gallery, but always alongside another artist such as Mike Maxwell. This time it is all new artwork, and continues his new kinetic, interactive paintings and brings them to a new level. The show is entitled “Island of the Colorblind”, a title that was inspired by Oliver Sacks book of the same name. Ever since Paul’s past shows at the gallery, and the work that has popped up in group shows, I have been waiting to see this new solo exhibition. I Made sure to be there on the reception night, take some photos, talk to Paul about his work and inpsirations, and even made a little video to show those fans that cant make it to the show how the paintings work. The show opened at 8pm and already had a good amount of people looking at the art. The gallery space, which is narrow, makes it a bit hard to take photos of the work if there is too many people in the gallery. Luckily for me, I had some time to take pics of the work before it got too packed. The lighting in this gallery always makes for great photos and with the intricacy, textures, and colors Paul’s paintings have, you want good light to really draw these works in. (more…) -
Preview: SIT – “Noir” @ Cave Gallery
There will be a whole mess of great shows opening the weekend of April 8th, starting it off will be a new solo show with Dutch artist SIT at the Cave Gallery. This will be the artists first US exhibition and will be entitled “Noir”. Stated on the site the “Noir” collection “is a haunting series that is simultaneously sexy and morbid”. Along with these new works, a limited edition prints will also be available. Have a look at the preview images, and then make sure to keep your eye on the site for the full show. Jim Darling’s “Bird’s Eye View” will also be opened reception night.

“Quentin Vs Coen” group show @ Bold Hype Gallery
Coming this April 7th, Bold Hype Gallery and Spoke Art will open a group show that is sure to please art and cult movie fans alike. “Quentin VS Coen” will feature work from over 100 artists, all of which will tackle a movie created by Quentin Tarantino or The Coen Brothers. Preview: “INLE” group show curated by Greg ‘Craola’ Simkins @ Gallery 1988
Opening March 11th at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles is a group show curated by artist Greg ‘Craola’ Simkins. The show entitled “INLEâ€, will feature over 100 artists drawing inspiration from Richard Adams’ award winning book, WaterShip Down, and more specifically the Black Rabbit of Inlé.
