  • Scope Miami Beach 2014

    Scope Miami Beach 2014

Every year around the beginning of December, social media and blogs light up with previews of art that will be on exhibition at either Art Basel, or at the Scope Art Show in Miami, Florida. Along with the images of art, there are always a few articles here and there about why the art world is loathsome and even why this is the worst time to be an artist ever. While these articles touch on a few ideas that I do agree with, I still think great art is being made and even shown at these festivals. Street art is one good example; take a look at Streeartnews.net for some of the best murals created during the event.

  • Madness at The Lodge Gallery

    Madness at The Lodge Gallery

A mind-opening new exhibition entitled “Madness” will open at The Lodge Gallery in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Curated by artist Lori Field (who is quite mad for her blindingly detailed silverpoint drawings), the exhibition explores a plethora of facets of madness, ranging from illness, to cultural norm, to confusion, melancholia to religion to…you get the point.

Madness pushes a person out of societal norms, yet aren’t we all mad, here? To quote directly from the exhibition’s statement: “If it is to be believed that the fine lines between genius and madness are drawn within cultural context, then one man’s mad fundamentalist heretic is another mans holy martyr, one woman’s delirium tremens is a another woman’s shamanistic vision. As it turns out, it’s not as easy as it seems to define madness even within the broad interpretations of our shared colloquial vernacular.”

Ms. Field’s choice of artists spans a wide berth, and allows for a wonderfully varied exploration of the topic with some wonderfully talented artists. Exhibiting artists include Allison Sommers, Ben Coover, Chris Crites, Chris Hipkiss, Dawn Black, Hanna von Goeler, Hiroshi Kumagai, John O’Reilly, Judith Supine, Judy Rifka / Daniel Dibble, Kymia Nawabi, Lori Field, Matt Rota, Sharmistha Kar, Sibylle Peretti, Sokol Andrew, Stephen J M Palmer, Winston Chmielinski and Zoë Field. As with all of The Lodge’s exhibitions, this one is not to be missed.

Madness opened on Friday, October 10th and will be on view until November 2nd, 2014.

  • The Happening

    The Happening

A few years ago, my colleague and friend, artist Allison Sommers and her husband, musician and scholar, Gerrit Roessler, started to organize artist salons that took place every few months in their apartment. They were hoping to create an environment for artist friends to stretch their creative muscles.

At these salons, music has been improvised and visual art collaborations have started. There have been mini-puppet shows, presentations of computer art in development, a myriad of sketches, paintings and sculptures, clothing, prints and jewelry on view. More wondrous things than I can list. The works are often surprising. Sculptors sing and painters bring in digital art…they cross boundaries to shake up their routines and learn new things.

    TheHappening_YuriLeonov_2013_5

Alison’s apartment is quite small, thus the parties are generally pretty small. There is a benefit to the size of these gatherings – the intimacy of them fosters a certain kind of conversation – but last year Allison thought that we might benefit from a larger gathering. The Happening was born.

The first Happening, which took place last August at Skylight Gallery in Chelsea, Manhattan’s famed art district, was a resounding success with a packed space. We are currently in the midst of organizing our second one, which will take place on Saturday September 13th at Gristle Tattoo in Bushwick, Brooklyn. If you will be in the area, please join us. Here is the Facebook Event Page.

    TheHappening_YuriLeonov_2013_2

I thought you might appreciate hearing from Allison directly:

Samantha Levin for Creep Machine Magazine: What prompted you to start the salons?

Allison Sommers: After a year or so of living in the city, I looked around and realized that I was friends with more artists than I had ever known in my life, and, furthermore, I respected their work and fed off their energy. I can’t remember what sparked the idea of starting the Salon exactly, but it grew out of this desire to see what happens when everyone gets together, shows work that noone else can see (in progress, not for public consumption) in a safe space, and mixes social life with art life until they’re indistinguishable. It’s a closed, intimate club where special things happen and joys and miseries alike are shared. Everyone sticks their neck out, and there is a power in being in art-cahoots like that. It’s a very old-fashioned sort of dream, a fin de siecle (part II) bohemian rejiggering.

    TheHappening_SamanthaLevin_2013_8

SL: Why move to a bigger event with the happening?

AS: It was quite organic– after a year or so of Salons, we all realized that we had something together, that there was a power to this unorganized collective that could be harnessed, or at least amplified. Having a public event also meant it was an event of inclusion, whereas the Salons are closed-door and finite (everyone must participate, and only so many can come, if nothing else but because my apartment is only so big). Very importantly, it’s an opportunity to engage in public displays of art without the confines of market or business concerns, something that comes up repeatedly as an irritant, the self-censorship and commodification of art object that plagues our ‘everyday’ work. The Happening is an art-verb for an evening, not a selling event, and it’s important to me that it remains dynamic.

    TheHappening_YuriLeonov_2013_3

SL: What are you hoping it will develop into?

AS: Gerrit and I have long, feverish, arm-waving discussions about what we want to do in New York with art and artists. I think that we (and our Salon/Happening compatriots) are very frustrated with the art market and scene that we engage with on a regular basis, and I really think that it’s up to us to bludgeon our worlds into our liking. There are plans for more solidification of collective, more organization of art-political action, but only time will tell whether it’s pie in the sky thinking or merely ideas that are waiting to be actualized. It’s better when it’s a bit of both, I guess.

  • Crazy 4 Cult: New York

The sixth annual Crazy 4 Cult group show opened this past week; the big change is that this time around it is in New York. There is a new lineup of artists with a good mix of new and returning favorites. Looking around the net there are stories of the long lines, people camping out to see the show, and an overall amazing night of art and cult movie entertainment. Just a handful of the artists that graced the show this year are Aaron Jasinksi, Allison Sommers, Casey Weldon, Cate Rangel, Chris B Murray, Dabs Myla, Fred Harper, Jason Edmiston, Lora Zombie, Sam Wolfe Connelly, and Travis Louie.

  • Prisma Artist Collective

Back in October 2011, a small group of artists had the idea to create a collective online. The internet is a great place to get your work out there, but I have often heard from artists that a place to swap ideas, share stories, converse, and even help each other out is lacking. So this group of artists started the Prisma Collective, and now there is already over 25 active members: Mary Jane Ansell, Tom Bagshaw, Lindsay Carr, Hsiao-Ron Cheng, Leontine Greenberg, Nicole Gustafsson, Caitlin Hackett, Daria Hlazatova, Ruben Ireland (shown), Sarah Joncas, Nom Kinnear King, Alex Louisa, Rod Luff, Kit Lane, Jen Mann, Kelly McKernan, Lady Orlando, Lily Piri, Audrey Pongracz, Michael Shapcott, Kaspian Shore, Allison Sommers, Kelly Vivanco, Casey Weldon, and Bec Winnel. The site is very well laid out, easy to navigate and is ready to go with the content. Each artists has their own profile and gallery, a shop section filled with prints and originals, and a list of interviews with the artists that will be published soon.

    Check it out: Prisma Collective
