Once again, October comes and so with it the Alternative Press Expo. Besides the idea of Halloween approaching, the APE is the other event I always look forward to during this season. Rows and rows of tables filled with independent comics, zines, shirts, and most importantly (to me at least) original art and prints. The APE is a great place to score some art and prints, and you might also learn about some new artists. Along with all of the new artists hoping to get their work seen, there are some familiar names such as Josh Ellingson, Alex Pardee, Camilla d’Errico, Mats!?, Karen Hsiao, Danni Shinya Luo, Joy Ang, and many more.

Review: Alternative Press Expo 2010

Originals by J.R. Williams
On Saturday I made my way into San Francisco for the 2009 Alternative Press Expo. Last year was a blast and I made sure I went this year, with a better idea of what to expect and what to look for. This year was more zombies, more squids/octopi and more derivative art but on a happier note the weekend reminded me of a few artists that I liked the first time I went. One of these artists is J.R. Williams, animator, illustrator, comic artist you name it. J.R. has done work for Weirdo and Heavy Metal Magazine and more.
J.R. had a good amount of prints and originals for sale at the Expo. If your like me and grew up on pulp comics, classic monsters and pined over ads for scary Halloween masks then you will dig J.R. Williams. I was able to pick up a Vampira print, would have liked the original but it was gone already. Most of his originals are ink and acrylics on paper and most are around $40.Here is some that fit with the Halloween mood, the three shown are still available.
