“Idol Hours” @ London Miles Gallery
On November 13th, the London Miles Gallery opened a group show entitled “The Idol Hours”, which is a reflective study of great historical master paintings by new contemporary artists. The show features work by some amazing artists such as Dave MacDowell, Stella Im Hultberg, Tom Bagshaw, Matthew Bone, Travis Lampe, Zoe Lacchei, Bob Dob, Carrie Ann Baade, Carles Gomila, Nom Kinnear King, Chris B Murray, Ken Keirns, and many more. I was very excited, being an art history geek, to hear of this exhibition and see what some of these artists would come up with when taking classical works for inspiration. Ken Keirns did an outstanding re-interpretaion of Da Vinci’s “Lady with an Ermine”, and even Dave MacDowell chose to reimagibe Da Vinci’s work. Tom Bagshaw, Chris Murray, and Carrie Ann Baade made some stand-out paintings. I loved looking through the works and attaching them to the classical pieces the artists worked from. I do feel that Joe Ledbetter could have created something so much better, instead of painting a small area on a print. of the original work.

“Wonders and Strange Girls” by Carles Gomila @ Christopher Hill Gallery
Opening this Saturday, September 18th at the Christopher Hill Gallery in St. Helena, CA, is the latest solo show of Carles Gomila. Entitled “Wonders and Strange Girls”, this new exhibition features around 18 new paintings by this mixed media mastermind. In order to create these stunning works, Carles using oils, acrylics, copper and gold leaf on different types of canvas. He often uses alkyd and egg tempera; i’m surprised he didn’t use either of those for these paintings. No matter what medium he chooses to us, Carles has a very unique style. Take a look at the preview images here, and then head over to Carles’ homepage for the rest.

Carles Gomila launches new website
Thanks to a tip from Tom Bagshaw, I was happy to hear that Carles Gomila has just launched his new homepage. This new site is not only great looking, but is very easy to move around in as well. When you enter a new gallery there is a popup and flash gallery embedded in that, and I am usually against this, but it works well. You get the option to zoom in on the paintings and some of them allow you to see how the painting is compared size wise when next to a human body, very cool feature.
I have really become a fan of Carles’ work, if you haven’t seen all of it yet head on over: Carlesgomila.com
His online store isn’t opened yet, but you can find some of his prints over at Fine Grime
