  • Kris Lewis @ David B Smith Gallery

On Friday, May 20th, the David B Smith Gallery in Denver, Colorado opened the latest solo show by Kris Lewis. This new show features 12 new paintings by this contemporary master. Lewis has a style of paintings that is very reminiscent of Mannerist painters from the late 1500’s. While those painters chose to distort and manipulate the figures and the scenes they occupied to a great extent, Lewis’ figures and paintings contain subtle distortions, so that the viewer would be drawn in not only by the emotion but by the feeling of something slightly odd about the works. He achieves this with perfect consistency, and never ceases to amaze with every new painting released. Take a look at the preview images here, and then over to the galleries homepage for the full show.

  • Josh Keyes “Collision” @ David B Smith Gallery

Opening tonight, November 5th at the David B Smith Gallery is the latest solo show of Josh Keyes. Entitled “Collision”, this new series of works as stated by Josh is inspired by “old alchemists engraving from around the 16th century. The engraving consists of multiple images that illustrate a personified narrative of the chemical transformation of metals moving from one solid to disintegration and reconfiguration. The iconographic device used in this engraving is that of the archetypal king whose power shifts between tyranny and freedom.” There will also be a new limited edition print released, based on the painting “Sowers” (seen last). The print will be 16″ x 48″, signed and numbered in an edition of 350. The show is now online to view, so if you are not able to be there in person make sure you check out the site.

  • “Rapture Suit” by Robert Hardgrave

Robert Hardgrave will have a solo show this coming December at the David B Smith Gallery, but he was nice enough to send over a project he has been working on that will be in this new show. As stated by Robert: “Rapture Suit” is a project where leftovers from failed paintings were used to construct an all encompassing outfit. Unable to see where we are going, we can only view upwards into the unknown.” The entire suit looks to be made from pieces of acrylic on canvas painting, that have been reconstructed. It’s an amazing idea, as it not only saves the pieces of so-called “failed paintings” from being tossed or painted over, but turns the pieces into a new 3-dimensional work of art. I can only imagine how colorful this suit will be once the show is released.
