The sixth annual Crazy 4 Cult group show opened this past week; the big change is that this time around it is in New York. There is a new lineup of artists with a good mix of new and returning favorites. Looking around the net there are stories of the long lines, people camping out to see the show, and an overall amazing night of art and cult movie entertainment. Just a handful of the artists that graced the show this year are Aaron Jasinksi, Allison Sommers, Casey Weldon, Cate Rangel, Chris B Murray, Dabs Myla, Fred Harper, Jason Edmiston, Lora Zombie, Sam Wolfe Connelly, and Travis Louie.

ArtFusion collaborative group show @ Last Rites Gallery
On February 11th, Last Rites Gallery in New York held the first part of the ArtFusion Charity event with a live painting day, and on Feb 25th will hold the gala and charity auction. ArtFusion bring together a over 15 talented, diverse, and well known artists to create collaborative works of art which will benefit The International Children’s Art Foundation (ICAF). Work by Ana Bagayan, Angie Mason, Annie Owens, Anthony Pontius, Billy Norrby, Brian Despain, Brian Murphy, Buddy Nestor, Chris Mars, David MacDowell, David Stoupakis, Dan Harding, Ewelina, Fred Harper, Genevive Zacconi, Jason D’Aquino, Jason Levesque, Jason Limon, Jennybird Alcantara, Mia Araujo, Michael Mararian, Paul Booth, Scott G Brooks, Vincent Castiglia, and many more can be seen during this event. The gallery sent out 15 canvas panels to be sketched on, which were then in turn painted by a group of selected artists to be collaboratively painted on.
If you head to the galleries homepage you will see the finished painting, as well as the drawing that was originally made. I love collaborative works, and this show has some outstanding examples of how great they can be. As the end of the year draws near, galleries and print shops are releasing some amazing work. One such example is the new show opening at Last Rites Gallery this weekend, December 3rd. Scott G Brooks will unveil his new series of paintings The Luckiest Widow In The World & Other Tales Of Misfortune, and Fred Harper will unleash 5 new paintings and 3 drawings in a show entitled Head Spin. This is bound to be a great show, both artists are very skilled with oils, and Scott G Brooks has some very large paintings and many of them have sold already. The 13th Hour 4th Annual Group Show @ Last Rites
Just a few days before Halloween, on October 28th, Last Rites Gallery in New York opened the 4th annual group show The 13th Hour. The gallery is known for consistently showing the best in dark and surreal art, and the 13th Hour is a show that focuses on dark surrealist works from a broad variety of artists. This year the list of participating artists included: Shawn Barber, Matthew Bone, Paul Booth, Colin Christian, Sas Christian, Jason D’aquino, Tom Gabriel Fischer, HR Giger, Fred Harper, Naoto Hattori, Michael Hussar, Joka, Sarah Joncas, Aunia Kahn, Michael Mararian, Chris Mars, Annie Owens, Chris Peters, Anthony Pontius, Dan Quintana, David Stoupakis, and many more.
Aside from the outstanding dark art shows the gallery opens month after month, I love the shows that feature dark works of art from artists that rarely contribute to these types of shows, and art from those you might not have expected, such as Self Deceased XXXII by Tom Gabriel Fisher — otherwise known as Tom Warrior of Celtic Frost fame and most recently Triptykon. Eli Livingston also created a sculpture, one that seems to be able to light up from the inside. leslie Ditto also created some prints from her painting Witching Hour, that might still be available from her Facebook page. Garbage Pail Kids @ Gallery 1988
On September 2nd, Gallery 1988 in Melrose opened a new themed group show, this one with work inspired by the Garbage Pail Kids. I remember when the collectors cards first came out in 1985, and kids went insane for them. The biggest draw for me was the art, and it’s the one thing that made the concept of this show exciting. There is a huge amount of work available in a variety of mediums, as well as limited edition prints. It was great to see what each of these artists would bring to show; would they make a painting styled like the classic cards, or opt to make something new and unique in design. There is a good mixture of both, and I am happy to see works styled like the cards and some that are not. It helps to break up what could have become too much. There is some amazing work in this show, seen below are some paintings by Allison Reimold, Dave MacDowell, N.C. Winters, and some killer prints available from Rhys Cooper. Preview: Chet Zar – “Faces of Death” @ Last Rites Gallery
Opening this Friday, July 22nd, at the Last Rites Gallery in New York is the latest solo show from Chet Zar. Entitled “Faces of Death”, this is Chet’s second solo exhibition at the gallery following last years “Endarkenment”. This new show will feature 16, 11″ x 14″ portraits, each one with a custom made frame. This show will also mark the remodeling of Last Rites, and along with Chet’s solo show, Craig La Rotonda will open his latest solo show, and there will be live painting with Genevive Zacconi, Shawn Barber, Kim Saigh, Chet Zar, Angie Mason, Fred Harper, Billy Norrby, Matt Rota, Paul Booth, & Martin Wittfooth. Sounds like it is going to be on amazing night, as if seeing the stunning new portrait work from Chet wasn’t enough. Travis Louie’s “The Ghost of Delilah and Other Stories” @ G1988
Travis Louie’s latest solo show, “The Ghost of Delilah and Other Stories”, opened this Thursday December 2nd at the Los Angeles Gallery 1988. The show consists mainly of drawings, many of which are collaborations with other artists such as Zoetica Ebb, John Park, Ewelina Ferruso, Chet Zar, Molly Crabapple, Fred Harper, Lola, Dave Chung, Greg ‘Craola’ Simkins, and more. I heard that John Cebollero was also one of the artists that Travis collaborated with, but that drawing doesn’t seem to be on the website. It’s a great looking show, and is exciting to see how the artists work comes together. For the most part all of the collaborations look killer.
