The most recent incarnation of the 13th Hour group show at the Last Rites Gallery opened this past Friday, October 29th. I am told by a few of the artist that attended the reception, that all went well, and it was one of the best show yet. The full show is now online to view, and seeing how today is Halloween you might want to head on over and check out some of the art. There is some really amazing work in this show, once again Scott G Brooks creates a mind-blowing painting, and I love how Sarah Joncas created something creepy in a Hitchcock kind of way.

Exclusive Preview: 13th Hour @ Last Rites Gallery
Coming this Friday, October 29th, the Last Rites Gallery in New York will host the third annual “13th Hour” group exhibition, just in time for Halloween. The previous two 13th Hour shows were amazing, and from the lineup of participating artists this year will be the best one yet. Starting at 7pm, fans will see work from Paul Booth, Scott G. Brooks, Caniglia, John Cebollero, David R. Choquette, Christopher Conte, Brendan Danielsson, Jason D’Aquino, Pedro De Kastro, Paul Gerrard, Fred Harper, Naoto Hattori, Charlie Immer, Sarah Joncas, Laurie Lipton, Travis Louie, Michael Mararian, Chris Mars, Richard Meyer, Chris Peters, Anthony Pontius, Pooch, Paul Rumsey, José Manuel Schmill, David Stoupakis, Brian M. Viveros, Jasmine Worth, and Chet Zar.

Halloween 2010 Feature
Halloween is upon us again, one of my favorite times of the year. Not only is it filled with great memories of being a kid, eating too much candy and watching horror movies late into the night, but this season is when some of the creepiest art is made. This is the second year I have posted a Halloween feature, and hopefully this one is even better. “Weirdo Noir” book by Matt Dukes Jordan
The author of the book “Weirdo Deluxe”, is back with a new book talking the gothic and dark art scene. The book is 9″ x 9″, 192 pages and features work from more than 20 artists such as Attaboy, Ana Bagayan, Glenn Barr, Jonathan Bergeron, Ray Ceasar, Jason d’Aquino, Bob Dob, Alex Gross, Sarah Joncas, Annette Hassell, Fred Harper, Dan Kennedy, Laurie Lipton, Travis Louie, Tara McPherson, Skot Olsen, Nathan Ota, Annie Owens, Anthony Pontius, Isabel Samaras, Shag, Dani Tull, Brian Viveros, and Edward Walton Wilcox.
I enjoyed Weirdo Deluxe quite a bit, and this book seems like a good followup. I’m not sure if I agree about the “noir”, or as stated in the description “artists who have embraced the dark side, employing gothic themes in their art.” There are a few artists in that list that have dark works for sure, but maybe I just have a different definition of “dark and gothic”.Get it here: Chronicle Books, or cheaper at Amazon

Preview: The Lowbrow Tarot Project @ La Luz de Jesus
The Lowbrow Tarot Project, guest curated by Aunia Kahn, won’t open until October 1st but the images are on the website now to check out and there is some pretty amazing work to be seen. 23 artists were given the opportunity to recreate the 22 cards (+back card) of the Tarot deck. The list of artists is quite impressive; Chet Zar, Christopher Ulrich, Edith Lebeau, Chris Mars, Carrie Anne Baade, Cate Rangel, Kris Kuksi, Brain Viveros, Molly Crabapple, Heather Watts, Laurie Lipton, David Stoupakis, Scott G Brooks, Daniel Martin Diaz, Danni Shinya Luo, and more. 100 Artists See Satan Fundraiser
First seen in 2004, the Grand Central Art Center is reviving the hit exhibition “100 Artists See Satan”, now available in paperback. This years show features 100 of the most talented contemporary artists giving their interpretation of the devil, and as opposed to the first version of the show, this one will be a fundraiser with “All proceeds will benefit future GCAC programs and exhibitions”. The exhibition will run from June 26th to August 15th, so if you are around the Santa Ana area make sure to stop by. Just a few of the artists that will be participating in this show are: Peter Adamyan, Ron English, Robert Williams, Tara McPherson, Jeff McMillan, Ana Bagayan, Scott G Brooks, Luke Chueh, Dalek, Coop, Korin Faught, Mercedes Helnwein, Camille Rose Garcia, Alex Grey, Chris Mars, Scott Musgrove, Mark Ryden, Mike Shine, Christopher Ulrich, Eric White, Laurie Lipton and many more.
A majority of the work is pretty amazing. I’m not the biggest fan of Gary Baseman’s work but I really like the drawing he submitted. Eric White’s painting “Nope”, freaks me right out. There is also a good amount of prints we have seen before, but its nice that these artists submitted work to a good cause. “Empress of Death” print by Laurie Lipton
Copro Gallery has just released a new print from Laurie Lipton. The print is from a drawing she had in her show “Day of the Dead” that took place at Copro last October. You have the choice to buy the print unframed or framed. I like the idea that the print is pretty much the same size as the original, this way you get to see all the amazing detail that Laurie is able to get. This print is 17″ x 22″, signed and numbered in an edition of 30 for $100, $300 framed and matted archival with plexi.
