Every year around the beginning of December, social media and blogs light up with previews of art that will be on exhibition at either Art Basel, or at the Scope Art Show in Miami, Florida. Along with the images of art, there are always a few articles here and there about why the art world is loathsome and even why this is the worst time to be an artist ever. While these articles touch on a few ideas that I do agree with, I still think great art is being made and even shown at these festivals. Street art is one good example; take a look at Streeartnews.net for some of the best murals created during the event.

Preview: “Literal eyes” group show @ London Miles Gallery
Opening tonight, May 12th at the London Miles Gallery is a group exhibition with 30 artists creating art inspired by their favorite books. This type of group theme show has popped up a few times this past year, and as far as I’m concerned that’s a good thing. It could be another group show based on movies, or 80’s nostalgia. Book always win, and this list of artists show that. Tom Bagshaw, Linnea Strid, Nom Kinnear King, Sergio Mora, Tahnee Lonsdale, Zach Cohen, Camilla D’Errico, Craww, and Carles Gomila are just a few of the artists that created something for this show. Keep your eye on the galleries page for the full show.

The Art of Ana Teresa Fernandez
Ana Teresa Fernandez is an artist that received her M.F.A from the San Francisco Art Institute. She was also a professor for the University of San Francisco as well as U.C. Berkeley. Ana has also created work with graphite, ink, and even some sculptures created out of broken glass, resin, and hot glue. I am most impressed with her oil paintings. She has a photorealistic style, and as you can see from the images she has mind-blowing control over the medium. Quite often I see artists try to render water, only for it to end up looking like sheets of warped metal, however Ana and the work of Linnea Strid show what a skilled painter can do when set out to recreate even the most difficult of subjects. Make sure you check out her website for the rest of her very impressive body of work. If you happen to be in the San Francisco area, Ana currently has some work on view at La Galeria de la Raza until April 16th.

The Photorealistic Art of Kim Sung Jin
An artist working out of South Korea, Kim Sung Jin graduated from the Hongik University for Fine Art. He works primarily in oils on canvas, and as you can see is a photorealist painter, with a very sensual style. I’ve always enjoyed artists that painted in a photorealistic style, but often the content was not as impressive as the skill level the artist had. This new crop of artists, such as those shown at Thinkspace Galleries “New Realism“, are creating work that is not only technically impressive, but draws you in further with the content. Kim Sung Jin’s art falls perfectly into that description. Every new painting you see while going through the artists gallery bring back that awe of how someone could create an image that looks so real, and he even paints macro-like closeups of the lips and face of the models. After looking at these previews, make sure to check out the artists homepage for a lot more.

“The New Realism” @ Thinkspace Gallery
Every week a new art show opens in the Los Angeles area, I am reminded why I wish I could visit there quicker than I can now. The latest show that opened at Thinkspace Gallery this past Saturday, December 11th, is a perfect example of the amazing shows those now living in Southern California are missing. Entitled “The New Realism”, this group show features new work from some of the best new artists that focus on realism such as Aaron Nagle, Jeff Ramirez, Jennifer Nehrbas, Linnea Strid, Nathan Deyoung, and Pakayla Rae Biehn. Each of these artists not only has a unique style all their own, but gives us a peek at a new possible direction for contemporary art to shift to. It’s a stunning show, one that needs to be seen in person, however the show is now online to be viewed.
