La Luz de Jesus is turning 25 soon, and to celebrate the galleries is having a massive group show, featuring three generations of artists that have shown with the gallery. Not only have more than 200 artists submitted a work of art, but also a small anecdote about their experience with the gallery. There is no doubt that La Luz de Jesus has been a major force in this art scene, and has helped to push many artists into the spotlight. Along with the exhibition a book will be released, going over the past 25 years of the gallery and the surrounding art movements that helped it along. I know I say this quite a lot, but this is one of those shows that you should not miss. I firmly believe that all art should be seen in person, but how often do you get to see so many amazing artists in one show? Robert Williams, Joe Coleman, Mark Ryden, Glenn Barr, Elizabeth McGrath, Gary Panter, Mark Mothersbaugh, Marion Peck, Owen Smith, Frank Kozik, Gail Potocki, Dave Cooper, Daniel Martin Diaz, Laurie Lipton, Shag, Scott Musgrove, Gary Baseman, Tim Biskup, Joe Sorren, Chris Mars, Eric White, The Pizz, Jessica Joslin, Gary Baseman, Bob Dob, Clayton Brothers, Shepard Fairey, Jennybird Alcantra, Carrie Anne Baade, Ana Bagayan, Shawn Barber, Scott G Brooks, Matt Groening, Charlie Immer, Michael Hussar, and the list keeps going.
The show will be in two parts, with the first part opening on October 7th, and the second part opening November 4th. The entire show with all of the works from both parts is now online to view, so head on over after to preview and take a look. There is some outstanding work in this show. Below are just a few of my favorites.

Review: Skinner – The Fragile Art of Existence @ Shooting Gallery SF
Just over a month ago, the latest solo exhibition from Sacramento based artist Skinner opened at the Shooting Gallery in San Francisco. Entitled “The Fragile Art of Existence”, this new show featured work that was created with a different mindset, one with less pressure, less expectations, and more experimentation. There is a great video that has Skinner talking about this series in lead up to the show (Here). I stopped by the show reception night, took some photos and a video. This video tour idea is working out pretty well, let me know if anyone has any ideas or ways I can make them better. On to the review!

Original drawings by Patrick Fatica
Patrick Fatica has recently added some new drawings and prints to his online shop. Each of the drawings/sketches is graphite on paper, the drawings are also framed and you can see them on the site. A couple of these drawings can be seen as figures used in prints that are also found in the shop, such as the drawing for “Invasion From Above” (seen first). Head on over and see everything in the shop.

Prints: “Jelly Face” by Charlie Immer @ 1xrun
1xrun is doing an amazing job of releasing prints that are not only affordable, but outstanding. This week they released a new print by Glenn Barr (featured) and now they just dropped a new print by Charlie Immer. “Jelly Face” is 11″ x 14″ on 330gsm Cotton Paper, signed and numbered in a max edition of 50. As always, each print comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. Charlie’s work perfectly rests on the line of “cute and creepy” with the vivid candy colors he uses and the content – which is most often filled with blood, guts, and skeletons – is in a class all it’s own.

The Flower Skeletons of Cedric Laquieze
Cedric Laquieze is an artist working out of Amsterdam. He graduated from the Rietveld Academy just last year, and primarily creates sculptures. Very unique ones such as the flower skeleton series seen below. I like the idea that Cedric has taken the idea of taxidermy art, and added a different twist to it. The idea of skeleton is a clear link to death, but with the flowers adorning them the idea seems to be softened. It’s also a stronger connection to life; if we did not go through such trouble to embalm and preserve, the bodies we bury would give way to other life such as flowers. Cedric has many more sculptures, photography and so on over at his blog. Head on over and check it out.

New work by Fuco Ueda
The first time I saw the paintings of Fuca Ueda I was hooked. The color palette, the surreal quality, and the random staining that each of the works have is amazing. I’m surprised her art isn’t in more shows, but there may be a reason for that I haven’t been let in on. I was notified however that she recently opened a solo show at the Aki Gallery in Taiwan alongside Kenichi Yokono who does this killer woodblock inspired works. The new show features 9 new paintings, 2 drawings, and an installation. The drawings are really a mixture of acrylic and graphite, however they have that delicate feel that drawings from such a talented hand can bring. Head on over to the galleries website to see the full show, and then make sure to visit Fuca’s homepage to keep up to date with news.

Joshua Harker x Crania Anatomica Filigre
If you haven’t heard of Kickstarter, here’s a basic rundown: artists, inventors, budding entrepreneurs, etc pitch their idea and offer some incentives for those that donate. Should the project reach the goal they get the funding, and it can even go over the goal and you still get the funding. One example of a great Kickstarter project is Joshua Harker’s “Crania Anatomica Filigre”. He has reached more than full funding for this project, but you can still donate and secure one of these amazing sculptures. Head on over and take a look at the project.
