  • The New Thumbtack Press

Back when I was writing a weekly article for SFWeekly about prints, one of the shops that I featured quite often was Thumbtack Press. They had a good selection and great prices. The site dropped off for a while but is now back, with new ownership, a new design, and more artists. The new site looks amazing, and most importantly is easy to move around. You can easily look at the recent print releases, or check out the full gallery from a specific artist. There is also a good amount of variety, from artists like Bob Dob and Ken Keirns, to Peter Diamond, Casey Weldon, Heiko Mueller, Candykiller and more. With each print you have the option of choosing stretched canvas, framed print, or just the print alone, and each print has a choice of different sizes. Another great feature is the “virtual room”, so you can choose a size and see how it will relate a room and the article inside. Gives you a good idea of the size of the print and if you might want one a little bigger.

Take some time and check out what they have to offer: Thumbtack Press

  • Preview: Laurie Lipton: The Carnival Of Death @ Last Rites

On October 1st, Last Rites Gallery in New York will be opening the latest solo exhibition from Laurie Lipton. Entitled The Carnival Of Death, this now show features 19 graphite drawings, and on October 2nd from 4 – 6 PM, the gallery will host Looking Lightly On Death, an art discussion and book signing. Laurie will go over her new show, drawing techniques, and thoughts on the afterlife all while patrons enjoy some tea and prepare questions for the artist. She will also be signing copies of her book Extraordinary Drawings, which will be available at the gallery. I’ve only been able to see Laurie’s work in person a few times, but I can assure you that it is work the trip. It’s not often you get to see graphite works of this scale and precision; the content alone makes this is a must see show.

  • The Art of Matthew Wade

Matthew Wade is an artist currently working in Hollywood. He received a degree in animation from the Vancouver Film School, and has had his work featured in Computer Arts Magazine and CMYK Magazine. His site not only has his animation and film work, but also some outstanding illustration works. Each piece has the nice graphic feel of digital art, but if you look closer you see this stippling effect with adds the traditional feel as well. Add in some really surreal scenes and you have some great art. Some of the prints are available on his Etsy site so make sure you check that out as well.

  • Social Funding and the Arts

    Social Funding and the Arts

For the past few years I have applied for various blog writing grants, and each time never made it past the first round of applicants. What a grant would mean for the site, is more contests, a better and more professional layout, and working on advertising the get the site out there more. The Creep Machine is doing well, but of course could always be doing better. However, the site is not doing well enough to get a grant. Every year I get denied and every year after I look to see if the winners are still going, and most of the time they are not. You might have a good idea for a site, but do you have the fire and ability to keep going for years? I’m not even posting as much on this site as I would like to be. Anyway, I as talking to some other artists about the whole “arts grants” area, and after talking with Arabella Proffer she wrote a post on her blog about her experience with grants, and the whole idea of social funding, such a sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. She sent over a version of her article to share with the readers, take a look and then comment with your experiences or ideas. Take it away Arabella.

I see so many great artists, designers, creative entrepreneurs who apply for funding, and after going through the ringer, get denied. It seems that it you don’t fit into a certain stereotype—or aren’t already known—the traditional route of seeking business loans, grants from foundations and various non-profits is almost futile. This is especially true if what you are doing is something new, different, or in an industry/genre that these people aren’t familiar with.

  • New prints by Godmachine

Godmachine has just released 4 stunning new prints to his online shop: “Arms of the Devil”, “Arms of God”, “Odin” and “Leviathan”. Each print is 16.54″ x 23.39″ on 280gsm soft white cotton paper, signed and numbered in editions of 20 for under $60 each. Limit is one per household of each print. I like that the “Arms of the Devil” and “Arms of God” are basically the same design, with a striking addition to change the look of the other. The small color addition and name change really does give the other print a different, more sinister vibe. Just goes to show how powerful color and even names can be.
