  • Steven Daily’s “Covenant” @ La Luz de Jesus Gallery

On January 7th, La Luz de Jesus opened four solo shows, one of which was Steven Daily’s “Covenant”. Apricot Mantle stopped by the show, took some photos and was nice enough to write a review for the Creep. Take it away Apricot.

If you have been following Art sites such as Arrested Motion and Daily duJour you have probably already read or seen the posts speaking of LA. Pop-surrealist Artist, Steven Daily’s latest body of work entitled ‘Covenant’. Steven’s new acrylic paintings depicting the ever so intriguing, shroud all that surrounds the dark world of the Freemasons. So I probably don’t need to bore you with more wordy details of artist statements and the like. Instead I would like to bore you with my first hand experience of going to La Luz de Jesus Gallery in Hollywood, CA the very night of the opening!

  • Dracula poster by Vania Zouravliov and Aaron Horkey

Saw this ver at Omgposters.com and had to share it here. Mondotees is gearing up to release an amazing new print to start the new year off. Created by Vania Zouravliov and Aaron Horkey, “Dracula” is a 23.75″ x 34″ screenprint, the standard is in an edition of 330 for $60 and the variant is in an edition of 70 for $110. Both prints were done by Burlesque design and printed with metallic inks. Even though Mondotees has released some truly great prints throughout the past year, this is my favorite so far. The prints go up at a random time today on the site.

  • New prints by Godmachine

Godmachine has added a couple of new prints to his online shop. The first new print is “Aliens”, and is 16.5″ x 23.5″, signed and numbered in an edition of 100 with only 50 available. The next print is “Black Death”, coming in at 16″ x 24″, signed and numbered in an edition of 130. All prints are shipped wrapped in tissue, in a super sturdy tube. I really dig the “Black Death” print, the majority of the colors being cool with the striking red accents looks outstanding.

  • Morgan Slade “Company Killers” @ Shooting Gallery

This past Saturday, January 8th, the Shooting Gallery opened the latest solo show of Morgan Slade. Entitled “Company Killers”, this new body of work brings more of Slade’s mixed media depictions of women adorned with a variety of masks. Football and storm-trooper helmets, as well as mascot and Halloween style masks. The face of the model is rarely seen, so the identity of these women is not the focus. Could this be any woman? Or is the idea here that the model is not the focus, regardless of how much the she draws the viewers eye in? The one thing that I did enjoy about these works is the textures, and the marks that some of the works held. I would almost rather see a few paintings made by Slade with the model completely removed. The show is on view until February 5th, so make sure to stop by and check out the show. In the meantime, hit the more link to see more images from this show.

  • “Is This Thing On?” group show at Gallery 1988

This past Friday, January 7th, a group show entitled “Is This Thing On?” opened at the Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles. Over 100 artists created works of art inspired by comedians. I’m not the biggest fan of the non-stop themed shows some galleries seem to be locked into, but one thing for sure the fans gets to see how their favorite artists interpret pop culture icons and have a laugh. There is some great work in this show, and some of the best work comes from artists that you wouldn’t expect to create such works. Dave MacDowell once again brings a work of art that is not only controversial, but shows that if this current art scene is starting to tame down as some have said, Dave is still out there pushing the limits. Travis Louie made one of the coolest portraits of Brian Posehn that I have ever seen, and NC Winters tackled one of the most famous characters in Bill Murray’s career. Chet Zar did a great job of creating a portrait of Andy Dick, that seems to ride the line of humorous and creepy. The show should be online soon to view all of the works.

  • “Exuberance Found” @ Distinction Art

Opening this Saturday, January 8th, is a group show entitled “Exuberance Found” and will feature new work by Chris B Murray, Mike Maxwell, and Daryll Peirce. The new works from Chris B Murray are amazing. He stated over on his blog that he is really confident about his new work, and he think he has every right to be. I also like the fact that Murray even has a few drawings in the show, which are no less exciting than his acrylic works. The full show is now online to view, so head on over and see the rest of the works.
