  • Ben Tolman in Volume 16 of Direct Art Magazine

I went into my local bookstore to grab the latest copy of Hi-Fructose, and of course it wasn’t there yet, but I did happen to notice an art magazine that I have never seen before. What drew me to it was the cover art created by previously featured artist Ben Tolman. The magazine was faily priced at $4.95 so I grabbed a copy and am very happy I did. This issue of Direct Art is volume 16 so its’ clearly been around a while. It’s is not filled with a lot of articles, but does have some great art and of course ads, but the ads do a good job of alerting you to upcoming shows and even artists you might not have heard of before, such as Dominic Rouse. Previous features can be found in the sites Archives.

If you can’t get a copy at your local bookstore, you can grab one off the site: Direct Art Magazine

  • New site launched, Artistopedia.com

In the midst of working on about 5 sites at the same time, I was able to finish up one that I have been working on for the past few months. The original idea was to create a site that worked like wikipedia and focused on profiles for current working artists. Wikipedia does allow working artists to add entries, so it seemed to me like the domain could be used for something better, something more community driven. So Artistopedia.com will not be a site that is driven by contributers. Whether it is essays about art, critiques or posts that are geared for the process of creating art, it is my hope that this new site becomes a place that is much more than just being exposed to new artists. I hope this new site becomes a place where artists can share knowledge they have while up an coming artists are able to learn an be inspired by all the possibilities that art allows.

So for everyone that has something share please head on over to the site and not only share you unique perspective you have on art, but also whatever tips and tricks you have learned throughout the years. For those that want to learn more about the creation and processes of art, and maybe are not able to attend a school, or efficient school for that matter, please check the site out and have fun.

  • “Fuglyheadz” miniature drawings by Ojimbo

Jim Sheely otherwise known as Ojimbo has just posted some smaller original drawings to his Etsy shop. These new drawings entitled “Fuglyheadz” are all aceo (“Art Cards, Editions and Originals”) sized pencil and ink drawings, so each one is 3.5 inches by 2.5 inches on Fabriano watercolor paper. They will have the number in which they are created on the drawing, as well as the name of the character. This is a great chance to get an original drawing from a very talented artist that rarely posts drawings. Let’s hope he keeps going with this affordable and very exciting series of works.

  • Preview” Kelly Vivanco @ Halogen Gallery

Opening this Friday, October 9th at the Halogen Gallery in Seattle is a new solo show from Kelly Vivanco. This is going to be her final show for a year or more as she will be preparing for her next solo show at Thinkspace. Most of the work in this new show has water as one of the main elements; Either water is present in the painting, or in the case of her “porthole” style paintings the design is inspired by the sea. One of the things I love about this new show, is that along with all of the new paintings, which happen to be round, she also created a wooden, 3-dimensional houseboat. I hope this is something that she does more of, her style as well as the color palette she used fits this type of work perfectly.
