Review: Michael Page’s “Into Passing” @ Shooting Gallery

Michael Page’s latest solo show, “Into Passing” opened at the Shooting Gallery in San Francisco almost two weeks ago on February 12th. I wasn’t able to make the reception, or even see the show up until this past week. The show will be up until March 5th and I highly suggest that if you are in the area, you see this show in person. I have been a fan of Michael’s work ever since I first saw his more narrative styled works at Varnish Art Gallery back in 2006. Since those earlier shows, his paintings have slowly evolved into a more abstract and now vividly colored body of work. Looking closely at each of the paintings you can still see the signature style of figures that he has always created, but now they are intertwined within the mass of abstract forms and loosely applied streams of color.

The Art of Ana Teresa Fernandez
Ana Teresa Fernandez is an artist that received her M.F.A from the San Francisco Art Institute. She was also a professor for the University of San Francisco as well as U.C. Berkeley. Ana has also created work with graphite, ink, and even some sculptures created out of broken glass, resin, and hot glue. I am most impressed with her oil paintings. She has a photorealistic style, and as you can see from the images she has mind-blowing control over the medium. Quite often I see artists try to render water, only for it to end up looking like sheets of warped metal, however Ana and the work of Linnea Strid show what a skilled painter can do when set out to recreate even the most difficult of subjects. Make sure you check out her website for the rest of her very impressive body of work. If you happen to be in the San Francisco area, Ana currently has some work on view at La Galeria de la Raza until April 16th.

Foetal Skull prints by Kevin Llewellyn
Kevin Llewellyn has added two new prints to his online shop, the first time that such prints have been available by the artists. The prints are entitled “Foetal Skull of Nacency” and “Lust For Life”. They are both 17″ x 13″, signed and numbered in editions of 25. You also have the ability to buy the prints as a set and save $50. There are beautiful looking prints, and I can imagine it would be hard to not want to by them as set.

“Finding Her Way” print by Leslie Ditto
One of the paintings that leslie Ditto has on view in the “Lowbrow Life” show, that was talked about in a previous post, is “Finding Her Way” which has now been turned into a limited edition print by Metro Orange Art. The print is 18″ x 22″ on 100% cotton rag paper, signed and numbered in an edition of 50. The print is pretty much the same size as the original, so all of that detain that Leslie worked so hard on will be displayed exactly as she meant it to be.

“Lowbrow Life” group show @ Copro Gallery
This past Saturday, February 19th, the Copro Gallery opened a group show entitled “Lowbrow Life”. The show features new work by Leslie Ditto, Bob Doucette, Tin, Chrystal Chan, Keith Weesner, and P-Jay Fidler. It’s a good mix of artists with a variety of styles, there is bound to be some work that captures you. I have a hard time keeping up with what the current art scene is named, Lowbrow, Urban Contemporary, New Contemporary and so on, so I was happy to see the show named as such, when the artists in this show are not often linked to the word “Lowbrow”. Either way, it’s a great show. I really liked the new work by Keith Weesner and Chrystal Chan. Leslie Ditto also created a great series of works. She stated that her new works were inspired by “my love of vintage toys and my fascination of the heart and mind of the pure inventor.” The show runs until March 12th, and is now online to view.
