    Gruss vom Krampus 2014

In the past few years I have seen the Krampus gain popularity here in the US. For those not familiar with this story, the Krampus is based in Alpine Folklore and is a companion to Saint Nicholas. While most of the kids in the US grew up with stories of getting a lump of coal and no presents if you had been bad that year, Austrian children would be warned that the Krampus would come and punish them, or even kidnap them if they had been bad. The hairy, horned, hoofed, and long-tongued figure, is perfect for inspiring new works of art. There have been a few books, and even art shows throughout the years with artists creating their own versions of the Krampus. If you would like to learn more, check out Krampus.com

    Scope Miami Beach 2014

Every year around the beginning of December, social media and blogs light up with previews of art that will be on exhibition at either Art Basel, or at the Scope Art Show in Miami, Florida. Along with the images of art, there are always a few articles here and there about why the art world is loathsome and even why this is the worst time to be an artist ever. While these articles touch on a few ideas that I do agree with, I still think great art is being made and even shown at these festivals. Street art is one good example; take a look at Streeartnews.net for some of the best murals created during the event.

  • Crazy 4 Cult: New York

The sixth annual Crazy 4 Cult group show opened this past week; the big change is that this time around it is in New York. There is a new lineup of artists with a good mix of new and returning favorites. Looking around the net there are stories of the long lines, people camping out to see the show, and an overall amazing night of art and cult movie entertainment. Just a handful of the artists that graced the show this year are Aaron Jasinksi, Allison Sommers, Casey Weldon, Cate Rangel, Chris B Murray, Dabs Myla, Fred Harper, Jason Edmiston, Lora Zombie, Sam Wolfe Connelly, and Travis Louie.

  • Casey Weldon’s “New World Hoarder” @ Spoke Art

On June 7th, Spoke Art in San Francisco opened the highly anticipated solo show New World Hoarder by Casey Weldon. Fans of Casey’s work have seen him release some outstanding painting in a variety of group show across the country; I was even lucky to have Casey submit a painting to the Marvelous Humans Group show that took place at the Articulated Gallery in San Francisco. This is Casey’s debut solo show in the Bay Area, and features more than 20 new paintings. Not only does Casey have a unique style, but the color palettes he uses to bring these worlds into view are always electric and surreal. Along with the new works by Casey Weldon, Peter Adamyan also has a mini show at the gallery entitled Back Room Cinema. Head on over to the Spoke Art homepage to see the full shows.

  • “I Like Soup” Andy Warhol Tribute @ Virginia MOCA

Jason Levesque (aka Stuntkid) was asked to co-curate a group show along with Heather Hakimzadeh at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art. Each artist was asked to customize blank soup cans, and these new cans would be shown alongside an exhibit of works by Any Warhol. The show, entitled I Like Soup, featured work by Glenn Arthur, Luke Chueh, Dominique Fung, Charlie Immer, JoKa, Sarah Joncas, KozynDan, Elizabeth Levesque, Jason Levesque, Jason Limon, Jim Mahfood, Dan May, Soey Milk, Buddy Nestor, Charmaine Olivia, Conrad Roset, Casey Weldon, Chet Zar, and many more.

Each customized can is now online to view, and for every can that is sold the proceeds will go to help benefit MOCA’s educational programs and the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. Head on over to the site and check out all of the works, some of these cans are outstanding. JoKa and his toothpick painting style is always impressive, and Chet Zar Kozyndan, and Jason Levesque went all out and even added some sculptural elements to the cans.

Tribute to Adam Yauch, aka MCA of the Beastie Boys

Adam Yauch, more famously known as MCA of the legendary band Beastie Boys has passed away at the age of 47 (link). For the past few years Yauch has battled cancer. Since the 80’s Beastie Boys have influenced an endless amount of musicians, created some of the most memorable music videos around, and inspired artists in every medium, not just music. Just last month the Beastie Boys were inducted into the the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. So turn on your favorite tunes, and check out the art below that was inspired by the music and members of Beastie Boys.

  • Now Online: “Marvelous Humans” Group Show @ Articulated Gallery

Just over a week ago on April 7th, the latest show I had the pleasure of curating opened at the Articulated Gallery in San Francisco. I had a few ideas of what would be my next show, but i thought that Marvelous Humans would be the most fun, and would be a great way to signal a break in my curating days. I’m not going to say I will never curate again, but I do have other projects now that will take more priority over curating. I am very happy with the art in this show, and the reception was a blast. A good amount of artists were present such as Glenn Arthur, Apricot Mantle, Robert Bowen, Peter Adamyan, Kelly Castillo, and Edward Cao. The artwork from the show is now available in the Articulated Gallery online shop, and you can also see some alternate images of the works over at the Creep Machine Facebook page. If you would like to see higher resolution images of the works, please feel free to contact me.

  • Preview: “Marvelous Humans” @ the Articulated Gallery SF

Opening this Saturday, April 7th, is a new exhibition I have had the pleasure to curate. Entitled Marvelous Humans, this group show features art inspired by the many human marvels that once lived, or are alive today. I have always been inspired by those who were born with a certain condition, and made the most of it, as well as those that choose to alter their bodies regardless of the negative reactions they would receive. So instead of focusing on these people as “oddities”, I thought it was time for some art to be created that was done with a level of respect. A few of the artists looked to the amazing “Human Marvels” website for inspiration, take a look when you have time.

The reception takes place at the Articulated Gallery in San Francisco from 8-10 PM, and a few of the artists will be in attendance. The Facebook Event page has the full info; please help spread the news. Participating artists include: Apricot Mantle, Casey Weldon, Dan Harding, Dave MacDowell, Edward Cao, Glenn Arthur, Elizabeth Levesque, Jackie Gallagher, Jason Snyder, Jay Doronio, Jessica Ward, Kelly Castillo, Larkin, M Fersner, Patrick Deignan, Peter Adamyan, Richard Frost Robert Bowen, Sandi Calistro, & Scarecrowoven. Take a look at the preview images, and we hope to see you there.
