Opening this Saturday, February 25th at the Cella Gallery in Los Angeles, is a group show curated by Nicole Bruckman and Stephanie Chefas entitled Femme Fatale. Over 35 artists, each one inspired by the female figure, have come together to present artworks in a variety of mediums. Aaron Nagel, Apricot Mantle, Aunia Kahn, Casey Weldon, Cate Rangel, Chris Peters, Chrystal Chan, Dave MacDowell, Delphia, Edith Lebeau, Gail Potocki, Jason Rudolph Pena, JAW Cooper, Jeff Ramirez, Jessica Ward, JoKa, Ken Garduno, Korin Faught, Linnea Strid, Nom Kinnear King, Paul Chatem, Stella Im Hultberg, and on and on. Prisma Artist Collective
Back in October 2011, a small group of artists had the idea to create a collective online. The internet is a great place to get your work out there, but I have often heard from artists that a place to swap ideas, share stories, converse, and even help each other out is lacking. So this group of artists started the Prisma Collective, and now there is already over 25 active members: Mary Jane Ansell, Tom Bagshaw, Lindsay Carr, Hsiao-Ron Cheng, Leontine Greenberg, Nicole Gustafsson, Caitlin Hackett, Daria Hlazatova, Ruben Ireland (shown), Sarah Joncas, Nom Kinnear King, Alex Louisa, Rod Luff, Kit Lane, Jen Mann, Kelly McKernan, Lady Orlando, Lily Piri, Audrey Pongracz, Michael Shapcott, Kaspian Shore, Allison Sommers, Kelly Vivanco, Casey Weldon, and Bec Winnel. The site is very well laid out, easy to navigate and is ready to go with the content. Each artists has their own profile and gallery, a shop section filled with prints and originals, and a list of interviews with the artists that will be published soon.

Prints: “Jimi vs. the MPC” by Casey Weldon @ Spoke Art
Spoke Art has just released a new limited edition print by Casey Weldon. Entitled Jimi VS/ the MPC, this painting was first seen at the I Want My MTV Music Video show (previewed) that took place last year. This is such a killer painting, not only because it’s a great spoof on an iconic image of Jimi Hendrix, but long before I created this site I was completely immersed in electronic music and the gear associated with it. The MPC was the staple sequencer for many musicians, and the complaints I would often hear is how lifeless drum machine/sequencers are. So to have Jimi, a guitar player that was so intense of full of life, to be burning up this machine is a great addition for gear geeks like myself.
Anyway, the print is a generous 18″ x 24″, signed and numbered in an edition of 35. It also has hand deckled edges and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.Get it here: Casey Weldon @ Spoke Art

Preview: “About Face” @ WWA Gallery
Opening this Friday at the WWA Gallery in Culver City is a show dedicated to portraits entitled About Face. This group show features work by Van Arno, Ana Bagayan, Sarah Bereza, Michael Foulkrod , Jeremy Cross, Richard J Frost, Tom Haubrick, JoKA, Jason John, Charlie Immer, Ken Keirns, Dave MacDowell, Laurie Lipton, Richard Salcido, Allison Reimold, Chris Peters, Cate Rangel, Casey Weldon, and many more. The reception is from 8-11 PM, and the show will be on view until February 11th.

The New Thumbtack Press
Back when I was writing a weekly article for SFWeekly about prints, one of the shops that I featured quite often was Thumbtack Press. They had a good selection and great prices. The site dropped off for a while but is now back, with new ownership, a new design, and more artists. The new site looks amazing, and most importantly is easy to move around. You can easily look at the recent print releases, or check out the full gallery from a specific artist. There is also a good amount of variety, from artists like Bob Dob and Ken Keirns, to Peter Diamond, Casey Weldon, Heiko Mueller, Candykiller and more. With each print you have the option of choosing stretched canvas, framed print, or just the print alone, and each print has a choice of different sizes. Another great feature is the “virtual room”, so you can choose a size and see how it will relate a room and the article inside. Gives you a good idea of the size of the print and if you might want one a little bigger.

Preview: “Dig For Fire” group show @ Cave Gallery
Opening this Friday, September 9th is a new group show from Cave Gallery entitled “Dig For Fire”. The show features art from an impressive list of artists all drawing inspiration from The Pixies. Work from Allison Sommers, Annie Owens, Ben Kehoe, Casey Weldon, Chris Berens, Chris Mars, Craww, Eatcho, Jennybird Alcantra, Kathleen Lolley, Luke Chueh, Macsorro, Ojimbo (featured), Robert Hardgrave, Shaunna Peterson, Tom Haubrick, and more. If your in the area make sure to stop by, the show is up until October 8th. This is a good chance to see some amazing work in person, such as the submissions by Allison Sommers, Chris Berens, and Ojimbo all seen below.

Garbage Pail Kids @ Gallery 1988
On September 2nd, Gallery 1988 in Melrose opened a new themed group show, this one with work inspired by the Garbage Pail Kids. I remember when the collectors cards first came out in 1985, and kids went insane for them. The biggest draw for me was the art, and it’s the one thing that made the concept of this show exciting. There is a huge amount of work available in a variety of mediums, as well as limited edition prints. It was great to see what each of these artists would bring to show; would they make a painting styled like the classic cards, or opt to make something new and unique in design. There is a good mixture of both, and I am happy to see works styled like the cards and some that are not. It helps to break up what could have become too much. There is some amazing work in this show, seen below are some paintings by Allison Reimold, Dave MacDowell, N.C. Winters, and some killer prints available from Rhys Cooper. Preview: “A Taste of Things to Come” @ Spoke Art
Spoke Art just finished up some remodeling in the gallery and is all setup to open a new group show entitled “A Taste of Things to Come”; a preview of what’s in store for the gallery over the next year. Work by Handiedan, Serge Gay Jr., Sam Wolfe Connelly (featured), Nimit Malavia, Rod Luff, Jonas Lofgren, Casey Weldon, Timothy Doyle, and Ron Ulicny. The show opening this Thursday, August 4th from 6-10pm and will be on view until August 25th.
