    Gruss vom Krampus 2014

In the past few years I have seen the Krampus gain popularity here in the US. For those not familiar with this story, the Krampus is based in Alpine Folklore and is a companion to Saint Nicholas. While most of the kids in the US grew up with stories of getting a lump of coal and no presents if you had been bad that year, Austrian children would be warned that the Krampus would come and punish them, or even kidnap them if they had been bad. The hairy, horned, hoofed, and long-tongued figure, is perfect for inspiring new works of art. There have been a few books, and even art shows throughout the years with artists creating their own versions of the Krampus. If you would like to learn more, check out Krampus.com

  • Preview: “Twin Peaks; Fire Walk With Me” Group Show @ Copro Gallery

Opening this Saturday, April 21st, at the Copro Gallery in Santa Monica is a new group show entitled Twin Peaks; Fire Walk With Me
    20th Anniversary Group Art Exhibition
. A year ago in February, Clifton’s Brookdale hosted In the Trees: Twin Peaks 20th Anniversary Art Exhibition, which had some amazing artwork (seen here), and many of he artists from that round will be seen in this latest exhibition. Martin Wittfooth, Glenn Barr, Chris Berens, Brett Amory, Chris Mars, Dan May, Chris Buzelli, Billy Norrby, Nicoletta Ceccoli, Esao Andrews, Lori Earley, Brian Viveros, Ryan Heshka, Scott C, Chet Zar, Paul Chatem, Stella Im Hultberg, and many more.

There is some very strong work in this exhibition, I was especially intrigued with the paintings by Billy Norrby, Glenn Barr, and Dan Quintana. Stella Im Hultberg submitted another beautiful painting, and I was happy see a landscape by Chris Peters. The stand out piece for me was Deliverance by Lori Earley (seen first). I was a great surprise to see Lori submit a digital painting that had some oil, acrylic, and mixed media embellishments to it. The more I looked at it I could see her style peek out, but the overall work is a new direction that I really hope she continues with. During the reception there will be a limited edition print available of this painting, un-embellished, signed and numbered in an edition of 20. This is bound to be a mind-blowing exhibition, so if your in the area make sure to stop by, otherwise check out the preview images and then over to the website.

  • “Things to Come” group show @ Bold Hype Gallery

Bold Hype Gallery has just revamped their website. The design is clean, and very easy to move around. Along with this new site, there is also a group exhibition going on that is worth seeing. The show is entitled “Things to Come…”: Visions of the future, dark and bright, featuring the work of 25 artists such as Doug Boehm, Chris Buzelli, Paul Chatem, R.S. Connett, Brendan Danielsson, Bob Dob, Charlie Immer, Jason Limon, Dan May, Heiko Muller, Nathan Ota, Shaunna Peterson, Chris Ryniak, Scott Scheidly, Joe Scarano, Jim (Ojimbo) Sheely, Allison Sommers, Nathan Spoor and more. I really love the pianting by Charlie Immer (first), he has such an amazing ay of painting something so morbid, but so colorful and almost happy at the same time.
