  • Prints: Moonlight Meeting by Dan May

Prints: Moonlight Meeting by Dan May

Dan May added a new limited edition print to his online shop today entitled Moonlight Meeting. The print is 11″ x 11″ on Hahnemuhle German Etching, 310 gsm, signed and numbered in an edition of 45. The great thing about this piece, is that is signifies a change in Dan May’s work. The monster to the left showcasing the style we have seen in his paintings for years, and the figurative foreshadowing on the right side. His paintings are becoming more figurative lately, so this piece in a way visually shows this transition.

  • “I Like Soup” Andy Warhol Tribute @ Virginia MOCA

Jason Levesque (aka Stuntkid) was asked to co-curate a group show along with Heather Hakimzadeh at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art. Each artist was asked to customize blank soup cans, and these new cans would be shown alongside an exhibit of works by Any Warhol. The show, entitled I Like Soup, featured work by Glenn Arthur, Luke Chueh, Dominique Fung, Charlie Immer, JoKa, Sarah Joncas, KozynDan, Elizabeth Levesque, Jason Levesque, Jason Limon, Jim Mahfood, Dan May, Soey Milk, Buddy Nestor, Charmaine Olivia, Conrad Roset, Casey Weldon, Chet Zar, and many more.

Each customized can is now online to view, and for every can that is sold the proceeds will go to help benefit MOCA’s educational programs and the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. Head on over to the site and check out all of the works, some of these cans are outstanding. JoKa and his toothpick painting style is always impressive, and Chet Zar Kozyndan, and Jason Levesque went all out and even added some sculptural elements to the cans.

  • Preview: “Twin Peaks; Fire Walk With Me” Group Show @ Copro Gallery

Opening this Saturday, April 21st, at the Copro Gallery in Santa Monica is a new group show entitled Twin Peaks; Fire Walk With Me
    20th Anniversary Group Art Exhibition
. A year ago in February, Clifton’s Brookdale hosted In the Trees: Twin Peaks 20th Anniversary Art Exhibition, which had some amazing artwork (seen here), and many of he artists from that round will be seen in this latest exhibition. Martin Wittfooth, Glenn Barr, Chris Berens, Brett Amory, Chris Mars, Dan May, Chris Buzelli, Billy Norrby, Nicoletta Ceccoli, Esao Andrews, Lori Earley, Brian Viveros, Ryan Heshka, Scott C, Chet Zar, Paul Chatem, Stella Im Hultberg, and many more.

There is some very strong work in this exhibition, I was especially intrigued with the paintings by Billy Norrby, Glenn Barr, and Dan Quintana. Stella Im Hultberg submitted another beautiful painting, and I was happy see a landscape by Chris Peters. The stand out piece for me was Deliverance by Lori Earley (seen first). I was a great surprise to see Lori submit a digital painting that had some oil, acrylic, and mixed media embellishments to it. The more I looked at it I could see her style peek out, but the overall work is a new direction that I really hope she continues with. During the reception there will be a limited edition print available of this painting, un-embellished, signed and numbered in an edition of 20. This is bound to be a mind-blowing exhibition, so if your in the area make sure to stop by, otherwise check out the preview images and then over to the website.

  • Prints: “Northbound” by Dan May

  • Art Focus: “Northbound” by Dan May

It’s been a while since I have created an “Art Focus” post, the section where I spend a bit more time talking about one painting or even series of paintings. Today, Dan May released a new painting that gave me the inspiration to get this section back on track. For those familiar with Dan May’s work you are well aware of the content in most of his paintings. He employs a dry-brush style with acrylic paints, and creates these magical worlds with creatures plucked right out of his imagination. In the past two years however, Dan has been adding more figurative elements to his work. Stylized figures, often with little or no facial features, would make their way into his paintings and slowly more and more figurative has been filling his portfolio. In 2011 (Flickr) Dan created a few paintings that hinted to a new possible direction, as well as showed the artists ability to render faces and figures.

This new painting, entitled Northbound, focuses a majority of the attention on the figure. The stylized hair seen in his most recent figurative work The Departure, is missing and Dan has opted for a more realistic presentation. The lighting, and sky is the background, is a bit moody, however it serves to really push the focus on the figure. Aside from the skin tones, expression, and energy in this figure, I am most impressed by the “weight” the figure seems to have. It’s clear that Dan thought of the internal anatomy while painting this figure, as opposed to creating a shell that tries to represent a figure. The most impressive figurative works are those that you can believe the person exists, no matter how stylized they may be, you can sense every element, every bone and muscle that makes up the figure. Dan has achieved this perfectly with his first painting of 2012, and now I am curious as to what the next year will bring.

  • Review: Obey Your Master Art Tribute to Metallica

This past weekend a group show dedicated to the music of Metallica opened at the Exhibit A Gallery. While I was not able to attend the show, friend of the Creep Machine Brennan was able to make it to the show, take some photos, and write a short review for us. Take it away.

So a few weeks ago I received an email about an invite only show coming up at Exhibit A Gallery here in Los Angeles. It was for a show entitled Obey Your Master and was going to be a group show with artists paying tribute to one of the greatest metal bands of all time, Metallica. The list of participating artists was a who’s who of the current art scene. You had everyone from Travis Louie to Shawn Barber and Sylvia Ji to Shepard Fairey all with pieces re-interpreting some Metallica songs into art. I was obviously very stoked to be able to attend this show, and it did not disappoint at all.
