For the past 16 years, Detroit, MI has been home of the The Dirty Show, an International Erotic Art Exhibition. This years special Guest Artist is John Waters, and will perform his one man show “This Filthy World- Filthier and Dirtier” on Preview Thursday, February 12th. I recently saw his special on Netflix and if this performance is anything like it, it’s bound to be highly entertaining.

Scope Miami Beach 2014
Every year around the beginning of December, social media and blogs light up with previews of art that will be on exhibition at either Art Basel, or at the Scope Art Show in Miami, Florida. Along with the images of art, there are always a few articles here and there about why the art world is loathsome and even why this is the worst time to be an artist ever. While these articles touch on a few ideas that I do agree with, I still think great art is being made and even shown at these festivals. Street art is one good example; take a look at Streeartnews.net for some of the best murals created during the event.

Preview: “Twin Peaks; Fire Walk With Me” Group Show @ Copro Gallery
Opening this Saturday, April 21st, at the Copro Gallery in Santa Monica is a new group show entitled Twin Peaks; Fire Walk With Me
20th Anniversary Group Art Exhibition. A year ago in February, Clifton’s Brookdale hosted In the Trees: Twin Peaks 20th Anniversary Art Exhibition, which had some amazing artwork (seen here), and many of he artists from that round will be seen in this latest exhibition. Martin Wittfooth, Glenn Barr, Chris Berens, Brett Amory, Chris Mars, Dan May, Chris Buzelli, Billy Norrby, Nicoletta Ceccoli, Esao Andrews, Lori Earley, Brian Viveros, Ryan Heshka, Scott C, Chet Zar, Paul Chatem, Stella Im Hultberg, and many more. There is some very strong work in this exhibition, I was especially intrigued with the paintings by Billy Norrby, Glenn Barr, and Dan Quintana. Stella Im Hultberg submitted another beautiful painting, and I was happy see a landscape by Chris Peters. The stand out piece for me was Deliverance by Lori Earley (seen first). I was a great surprise to see Lori submit a digital painting that had some oil, acrylic, and mixed media embellishments to it. The more I looked at it I could see her style peek out, but the overall work is a new direction that I really hope she continues with. During the reception there will be a limited edition print available of this painting, un-embellished, signed and numbered in an edition of 20. This is bound to be a mind-blowing exhibition, so if your in the area make sure to stop by, otherwise check out the preview images and then over to the website.

Preview: La Luz de Jesus 25
La Luz de Jesus is turning 25 soon, and to celebrate the galleries is having a massive group show, featuring three generations of artists that have shown with the gallery. Not only have more than 200 artists submitted a work of art, but also a small anecdote about their experience with the gallery. There is no doubt that La Luz de Jesus has been a major force in this art scene, and has helped to push many artists into the spotlight. Along with the exhibition a book will be released, going over the past 25 years of the gallery and the surrounding art movements that helped it along. I know I say this quite a lot, but this is one of those shows that you should not miss. I firmly believe that all art should be seen in person, but how often do you get to see so many amazing artists in one show? Robert Williams, Joe Coleman, Mark Ryden, Glenn Barr, Elizabeth McGrath, Gary Panter, Mark Mothersbaugh, Marion Peck, Owen Smith, Frank Kozik, Gail Potocki, Dave Cooper, Daniel Martin Diaz, Laurie Lipton, Shag, Scott Musgrove, Gary Baseman, Tim Biskup, Joe Sorren, Chris Mars, Eric White, The Pizz, Jessica Joslin, Gary Baseman, Bob Dob, Clayton Brothers, Shepard Fairey, Jennybird Alcantra, Carrie Anne Baade, Ana Bagayan, Shawn Barber, Scott G Brooks, Matt Groening, Charlie Immer, Michael Hussar, and the list keeps going.
The show will be in two parts, with the first part opening on October 7th, and the second part opening November 4th. The entire show with all of the works from both parts is now online to view, so head on over after to preview and take a look. There is some outstanding work in this show. Below are just a few of my favorites. -

Preview: “Faces” by Glenn Barr @ La Luz de Jesus
Opening this Friday night, June 3rd at the La Luz de Jesus gallery is a new solo show and book release signing by Glenn Barr. The show is entitled “Faces”, which is also the name for Glenn’s new book. This new show “explores the images that permeate our collective consciousness and define the iconic”. Glenn used found wood materials instead of canvas, something he would do when he first started painting. This found wood has more personality, and goes along with this theme of creating images that permeate the mind. The book signing starts at 7pm, and the reception goes from 8-11pm. This is such an amazing show. The colors Glenn uses, as well as the mix of his stylized paintings and his more realistic works really help to make this a strong show.

“Lyric” group show @ 323 East Gallery
323 Gallery recently opened a show curated by Glenn Barr that features art inspired by music. It seems like it has been quite a long time since a show like this has come around, hopefully this show and the “INLE” show curated by Craola will signal a new trend towards art and books, instead of movies and pop-culture mashups. Not that I don’t like those kinds of shows, but it would be nice for some more variety. “Lyric” opened on March 19th and will run until April 19th. Glenn Barr has assembled a greta list of artists such as: Jeff Soto, William Wray, Bask, Chris Recarrdi, Rick Morris, Gary Taxali, Chet Zar, Brandt Peters, Kathie Olivas, Yumiko Kayukawa, Camilla D’Errico, Brandi Milne, Lisa Petrucci, and more. After the preview images head on over and check out he full show.
